Just forwarding info about a great OzDox event, all about "Emerging
Documentary Filmmakers" - it involves an open discussion + screening of
short docs, and will be held at UTS campus on October 13th in the evening.
Please pass it on to all interested parties!!

Cheers,
Dee
/Reelife Coordinator

P.S. OzDox is not a partner of Reelife, but I think that generally anything
that benefits emerging filmmakers, and is non-profit - both of which are
integral parts of the the Reelife philosophy - is worth promoting.

Reelife has formed a partnership with “The Salon”, Sydney’s monthly arts and
debate night.

We have the opportunity to screen a few short films at each event, and for the
filmmakers to get up and speak (if they wish).

The next event is this Thursday: 25th August. The theme “IS CIVIL LIBERTY A LIABILITY” will be discussed, + screening a film on civil rights and the new terror laws. Flyer is attached.

For NEXT month, we are looking for short films that relate to the theme: WHY I HATE AMERICA.
We aren’t looking for cheap shots at the expense of the land of freedom: that would be too easy. So if you have something that tackles the idea originally, intelligently, cinematically, then this is a good chance to screen and be part of the debate.

Film under ten minutes and in any genre or style will be considered – not just docos.

The Salon event is on Thursday September 29th.

If you think you have a short film that in any way, shape or form relates to the state of the nation, then email reelifefestival@....

Cheers,

Dee Jefferson

P.S. My views do not in any way shape or form represent what I actually think: I may hate America; on the other hand, it is far more likely that I am very curious about America, and would like to live in New York. It’s hard to tell.

* IMPORTANT BREAKING REELIFE NEWS! *

As many people will have heard, the Valhalla Cinema in Glebe (Reelife’s screening home!) recently closed its doors. Sadly, this closure looks permanent. Even worse, the Chauvel has been scheduled to close at the end of September. These leaves many people and orgnisations (including festivals) in Sydney in a predicament.

In this context, we have made a decision to adjust the Reelife schedule, in anticipation of finding a new permanent home.

YES there's movement at the Reelife ranch, and the movement is full steam ahead for MARCH next year, which is the NEW REELIFE SCREENING LAUNCH!! Having been held in September and October since it started in 2002, the Reelife festival is now making a strategic decision to screen at a time that will make it more accessible for university students. Very exciting news for the Reelife team, and hopefully not too disappointing for our entrants!

The new screening launch is also planned to coincide with our hope to launch an online screening space. What does this mean? It means a new part of the Vibewire/reelife website where people can view a selection of Reelife entries from the last 4 years and onwards. This is a positive new collaboration between the Vibewire.net and Reelife branches of Vibewire Youth Services. MOST IMPORTANTLY, an online screening space would greatly advance our mission to become accessible to as many young people as possible.

The NEW CALL FOR ENTRIES deadline for Reelife will be at the end of February, and anyone interested in youth voices generally, their community, or advocating for their pet issue, is encouraged to use the extra time to make something new, bold and original for Reelife 2006. This is one of the few festivals where all you need is a good idea, passion and a 1-chip camera!

We can only give our biggest APOLOGIES to those filmmakers who have already submitted work: please rest assured that your work will be held safely for the judging process early next year.

All other conditions of entry to the Reelife Festival remain the same, and there WILL be spectacular prizes. So get out and active, an eye to the heavens and an ear to the ground for news via pony or carrier-pigeon. Or just keep checking the Reelife website at www.vibewire.net/reelife.

Cheers,
Reelife Team

Well boys n girls, fuzzies n furries…

It’s not quite, er, the Cup, but we Sydney kids are all extremely excited to be in Melbourne this weekend, trying out a Reelife screening J

As I suppose most of you know, Reelife is a non-profit project run by young people, and presenting films by people 25 years and under. We are made financially possible through our own fundraising, sponsorship support, and grant support from the Foundation for Young Australians.

More importantly, we are made possible by participation from brilliant young artists/filmmakers, and audiences that care, enough to turn up and see something different!

In 2004 we present short animations, documentaries, dramas, comedies and experimental films, about everything from the state of the world, to Australian politics, to the strength of friendships, pain in relationships, depression, and being a skater.

We are really appreciative of support from Spinach7, 3RRR and Open Channel in our first year in Melbourne, big thankyous!

There are two screenings, and different programs on each night:

Sunday October 31st 7pm:

All the Reelife 2004 Finalists – 15 short films, the whole gamut.

Monday November 1st 7pm:

The 5 Reelife 2004 Prize-winners, and half of the program showcasing our Victorian entries. Because of the generosity of Open Channel, we are able to present an Audience Choice prize to the film voted for on the night. This includes:

$500 worth of OPENChannel equipment hire.  Including choice of access to:

·         Sony PD 150 & Panasonic DVX 100 Mini DV camera kits.

·         Final Cut Pro 4 digital editing Suites.

·         Blue Screen Studio facilities

·         Sound & lighting equipment.

A 12 month OPENChannel Membership.

A consultation session with OPENChannel's Executive Producer.

Tickets are only $10, for concession and full price alike – so come along and check out what young people across all the states care about, what they feel needs to be seen.

Check out www.vibewire.net/reelife for more details, and www.acmi.net.au .

Best Wishes!

The short films screening range from black humour to beautiful,
films that'll make you laugh, films that'll make you cry, possibly
films that'll make you think "shit! i couldve done that! Next year
i'm entering and winning lots of cool shit!"...

On the night we will be giving away silly amounts of stuff, like
Apple ipods, a lighting kit, $7500-worth of equipment hire from
Panavision, Sony DVD player/burner, Copies of finalcut pro and DVD
pro... i'm thinking that giving away so much awesome stuff will be
lots of fun :-)

Judges this year include Marc Fennell (FBi 94.5FM's Movie Guy and
SBS Movie Show); documentary filmmaker, Anna Broinowski (Helen's
War, Sexing the Label, Tsunami), Curtis Levy (The President vs David
Hicks, Hephzibah) and Tom Dawkins (National Coordinator, Vibewire

night - so it's out of our hands now!

Check out the following weblink to see details about the screening
night, including a list of finalist films and short synopses...

http://www.vibewire.net/reelife/screenings.htm

We'd love to see you all there, we hope this screening at the
valhalla will be as special as the previous years. It's a really
great vibe, and we want everyone to come out to the pub with us
afterwards to celebrate another interesting year!

Cheers

Hey furry people
- we are conducting a national survey of young people as consumers
of media. THe surveys are due THIS WEEK, on Friday, and if you get a
complete survey in on paper or online, then you are in the draw to
win:

FIRST PRIZE: $200 Voucher to Wishlist.com.au (online shopping)

and creators of media in Australia.

As part of this, we have developed a survey, for young people
between the ages of 15-30.

Your assistance is needed to make this survey as comprehensive and
broadly representative of young Australians as possible! Vibewire is

new initiatives based on the needs and interests of young people in
relation to media input, access and representation.

How can you help?

Please distribute this email far and wide, to as many young people
(or people who work with young people) as HUMANLY possible! We hope
that this kind of survey will have long-term benefits for young
people, but we need YOUR HELP!

How can young people participate in the survey?

By visiting http://www.vibewire.net/survey/ and filling out our
online survey;
OR

Holy crap!
it's been a while...

This year so much has been happening, on a personal and a Reelife
level, that i have almost forgotten to let you all know about Call
for Entries - but not quite.

It's an exciting year for Reelife - a partnership with Silent Cells
Youth Film Festival [NSW], Sponsorship by Sydney Morning Herald -
being financially viable is certainly re-assuring - expanding
screenings to Melbourne, and hopefully some thoughtful films given
we are in an election year, still in IRAQ, and Rove and Belinda
Emmet are getting married. Plenty of food for thought.

CALL FOR ENTRIES 2004

Established in 2002, Reelife is a festival of youth filmmaking and
ideas, designed to create an alternative media outlet for young
people with something to say on issues important to them.

Make a film about what matters to you, whether it be personal,
political, social or a community issue. All entrants must be 25
years old or less. We encourage you to explore ideas in any style,
from comic and quirky, animated and experimental, to documentary and
drama. Films can be a maximum of ten minutes long.

Hi all!

Firstly: a big congratulations to everyone who just got through
another gruelling school/uni year. You rock. We all rock.

Secondly: for those who did not attend Reelife this year, and those
who did but want to get another perspective on the festival [or see
what the public REALLY thought of your film], check out this review
on vibewire.net:
http://vibewire.net/articles.php?id=2226

Thirdly: Reelife is screening a "Best of Reelife 02-03" at
the
Bondi Pavilion on January 18th, as part of the Live Bait festival.
It will be an outdoor screening (ooooo!), and more details are to
come…
This screening is proudly sponsored by the Sydney Morning Herald.

Fourthly: Sadly (very sadly) the Wollongong screening of Reelife will no longer
be taking place, due to the Elements Festival (at which we were screening) being
cancelled, due to circumstances beyond that festival's coordinators' control...
These things happen out there in the big wide world.

Til next time,
Dee

Hola segnors and segnoritas,

Just a (well over-due) shout out about the winners for Reelife 2003.
These were selected on the Launch Screening/Awards night at the
Valhalla Cinema on Sunday 28th September. The panel of judges was:

Tom Zubrycki – Documentary Filmmaker and Producer [Molly and
Mobarak; The Diplomat; Making Venus]
Anna Broinowski – Documentary Filmmaker [Sexing the Label; Romancing
the Chakra]
Thao Nguyen – young filmmaker, activist and Youth Chair of the
Ethnic Communities Council of NSW.
Tom Dawkins – founder and National Coordinator of Vibewire Youth
Services

This year we gave the judges plenty of time to fight amongst
themselves about who should win what. As it was, this was such an
ordeal that one category was shared amongst two films.

Best Film: Little Noel Wants to Fly
Best Film by Under-18s: Dropkicks
Best Documentary: Asian Persuasion AND Unfinished Business
Panavision Prize for Best Cinematography: Mindfull
Audience Choice: Salomon

To see who made these films, where they are from and what age they
are, PLUS read synopses of what the films were about, visit the
Reelife website at www.vibewire.net/reelife.

We still have more screenings to go [see details below], but in the
meantime HUGE thanks must go to our sponsors, the Sydney Morning
Herald, as well as all the prize donors and our media partners.
Thanks also to everyone who entered Reelife this year, and to those
who came on the night to check out the finalist films.
We rocked the Valhalla, with 400 people packing out the main
theatre. This is good coz it means we get to do this all over again
next year.
Til then, get active and inspired and keep making films.

Hey everyone!

Just a quick note to announced the finalists for Reelife 2003. These
are the films that will be screened at the Valhalla this Sunday, at
the Awards Night.

Dream
Dragonhood
Beneath the Hood
Broken
Asian Persuasion
Kacho
Desolato
Dropkicks
Little Noel Wants to Fly
Remote
Survival of the Fittest
Salomon
Unfinished Business
God Bless America
Mindfull
Disturb
Edge Neevus

We had a large team selecting finalists this year, and there were
not only lots of entries, but lots of excellent entries across a
range of styles, genres and topics...
Consequently it was really hard cutting it down to this final list.
A selection of the best of the films that we *cant* screen at the
Valhalla will screen as part of the Reelife tour at campuses,
regionally and interstate later in the year.

In the meantime: the Launch Screening is this Sunday at the
Valhalla, 7.30pm. Ticks are only $10 on the door, and if you think
of this as only being a bit more than 50c per film, you have a real
bargain...and of course you will be supporting a non-profit youth
media project and making sure it keeps happening ;)

There is also the chance for everyone to have their say by coming
along on the night and voting for the Audience Choice Award. We
don't entirely trust the judges, so we want to know everyone else's
opinion.

Ok that is all for now, more updates later in the week.

Cheers,
Dee

Hello everyone.

With call for submissions for Reelife 2003 well-and-truly closed, we
are stoked to announce an increase on last year's number of entries!

Thankyou for everyone who sent us their film - we got a huge range
of styles and topics from all round Australia, and from people
ranging from 12 years to 25. Amongst the entries there have been so
many beautiful, creative and confronting expressions of people's
concerns and perspectives - the standard has honestly blown us away.

At the moment we are in the process of selecting finalists for the
Reelife launch screening/awards night on Sunday September 28th at
the Valhalla Cinema in Glebe.
We anticipate that the finalists will be confirmed and informed by
the beginning of next week.

If you entered a film this year and it is selected as a finalist,
you will need to send us:
* a Mini DV copy of your film (if possible)
* jpeg stills from your film (if not already supplied)
by early next week.

If you want to find out more about the Reelife Festival for this
year, check out the website at www.vibewire.net/reelife.

THIS YEAR by THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

P.S. if you want a taste of what is coming at the Awards Night, there is a
Screening at Sydney University this coming Monday the 15th, of selected
films/finalists and all the Sydney University entries.
This Screening is at 5pm in Tra Baci Cafe, lower level of Manning House, and is
(of course) FREE.

Best wishes to everyone,

Hello captive audience!

There are over 2 months til entries are due for the Reelife Short
Film Festival 2003. That means
1. we are more organised than last year in getting our call for
entries out.
2. YOU have time to make something for this year's festival; instead
of entering something old, you can get out there and make something
fresh about what's going on in your world, life, community, head,
backyard.

Most of you on this list submitted films last year - and we want
MORE! Even better, spread the word where you live, make our job
easier... Below is the Reelife call for entries spiel: go forth and
conquer.

The focus is on getting a community issue out to a broader audience,
through documentary.

Hey everyone, happy new 2003!
Reelife will be returning later this year, and a call for entries
will be announced within the next couple of months.

Meanwhile...in the spirit of our commitment to youth filmmaking and
perspectives,
we'd like to let you know about another festival that is coming up -
Silent Cells 2003 Youth Film Festival.

This is quite similar to Reelife, except it is run as part of the
National Youth Week festivities - i.e. the main screening will take
place during Youth Week in April, at the Valhalla. We love what these
guys do, because it is genuinely about providing a forum for youth
ideas, and not driven by profit and cheap laughs!

Details are below for those who are keen:

entry guidelines:
* open to anyone between 12-25 yrs of age
* submissions due 22nd March 2003
* Short films
* based on youth issues

for more info, check out <http://www.silentcells.com.au/>

I'm aware that this is not strictly reelife related, but i heard about these
two opprtunities for screening/prizes that might be of interest for all you
filmmakers/watchers who are interested in short films
with a cultural and/or social commentary perspective:

1/ The SLJR (Students for Land Justice and Reconciliation) Film

Showcasing indigenous films and films which educate and inform us
about the relationship between indigenous and nonindigenous
Australians.
"Student for Land Justice and Reconciliation are a diverse group of
students based at Melbourne University who aim to support Indigenous
struggle. As a young and growing group they have primarily tried to
inform themselves and other non-Indigenous people about Indigenous
experiences and history since invasion and, importantly, formulate
how they can play a role in reconciliation and in the fight for
justice."

2/ The Carnivale Multicultural Short Film
Prize; a prize for best short film script
or proposal with a multicultural
focus.

The Carnivale Mulitcultural Short Film
Prize consists of a cash prize of $2000,
mentorship support from Macquarie
University, a short course from AFTRS, and
the completed film made by the winner
will screen as part of Carnivale 2003.

documentary

Well, Reelife launched at the valhalla On September 29th to an
audience of 400, packing out the main theatre! It was a huge success,
and we have had nothing but positive feedback from people about the
films screened.

We screened later that week at This Is Not Art festival in Newcastle,
where the documentary "My People Our People" won audience choice vote
once again!

If you missed out, then there are still four more screenings to go!
This week, we will be screening at:

UNSW: Wednesday 16th October, 6pm [Club Bar @ Roundhouse]

Macquarie University: Thursday 17th October, 8pm [Lounge Bar @ SAM
building]

The films screened will be the following winning films and Finalists:
* Inquisition [best cinematography]
* Pinned [Best documentary: about forest rescuers taking on the State
Logging Authority]
* High Street Love Story [winner best comedy and best film overall]
* My People Our People [Winner of People's Choice award: Documentary
which asks young children what they really know about Aborigines]
* A Life Like Crystal [a short autobiographical documentary about a
young Aboriginal girl's experiences of poverty, drug abuse, and the
criminal cycle].
* Mr Samson [a fantastic short animation about a liberated garden
gnome!]

Also screened will be the best films from UNSW and Macquarie Campuses
respectively, and the audience will vote for the best film from that
campus, which will win a special prize.

Entry is FREE, and there will be prizes for audience members who vote!
The best film as chosen by the audience at each campus will also win a prize.

For more info you can email [reelife@..., or check out

I look forward to seeing you there!

Well, everyone who was there doesn't need this email to tell them it
was a success - we were totally overwhelmed by the turn out, and more
importantly the amazing vibe of the crowd, who really seemed to warm
to the films they were viewing...

I can't praise the filmmakers enough, it was fantastic work. For
those who weren't there, the winners were:

Best Film: High Street Love Story
Audience Choice: My People Our People
Best Cinematography: the Inquisition
Best Documentary: Pinned
Best Comedy: High St Love Story

Next year we gonna get more prizes, because there were SOOO many
deserving films that missed out.

Thanks everyone who submitted work and/or came - you can't have a
film festival without films, and you can't have it without an
audience either.

Hey everyone! If you haven't checked out our website recently, then
you might not know that we have forums happening this weekend, on the
day of the screening...
They are informal discussions being held in COFA common room [read:
lots of comfy chairs and sofas!], with invited guests such as Dov
Kornits from Filmink, Jen Peedom from Race Around Australia, Jan Wood,
independent Filmmaker and social historian, and general
filmmaking pros and not-so-pros, our entrant filmmakers, and everyone
who has any interest in film or talking is welcome!

There are three sessions, about 1 1/2 hours each. You can come to
just one or all of them, depending on what interests you! [and its
only $5 for the day].

Check out www.vibewire.net/reelife for session and speakers details.

If you want to register for the forums, contact Skye Wagner on

Ok, the good news: we really enjoyed watching everyone's films, and
we hope you come back next year for more. This is our first year, so
we were really excited to get such a good response - not just from
NSW which is where we are based, but from Victoria, West Australia
and QLD.

The sad news: if you haven't got a call from us, then you weren't a
finalist! But if you want to see who pipped you at the post, then
come to the Valhalla at 7pm this Sunday [29th] - and you can heckle
if you feel bitter ;)
see website for more details: www.vibewire.net/reelife

Cheers everyone who entered, because you got off your arses and
submitted films about things that are important to you, and things
that the community should really be seeing....

I look forward to meeting many of you on Sunday,

Ok guys - some of you we know are from various university campuses,
but others we're not sure. This is relevant in terms of our campus
screenings: your chances of being screened increase if you go to
Sydney Uni, UNSW, UTS or Macquarie Uni.

Sooo, if you go to uni at one of these, then let me know asap! You
can do this by emailing reelife@... - You just
have to give me your name, your film and your uni, plus your student
number for that uni.

Hello All!

Well, the good news is:
In our first year, we received an
overwhelming response from people under
25 who had something to say – from rural,
regional and metropolitan NSW, Victoria,
Perth and Queensland.

So What Now?

We choose the finalist films, we let the
lucky filmmakers know, and we screen 'em!

Main Screening: 29th September, Valhalla
Cinema, Glebe. Doors open at 7pm.
Tickets: $10 on sale at the door.

This is where the finalist films are
shown and the prizes are awarded for best
film, best documentary, best comedy, best
cinematography, and runners-up. After the
main screening, we will tour the winning
films + the best films from each
campus/region at:

* Newcastle: October 3rd, 9pm (as part of
the TINA festival)

* UNSW: October 16th, 6pm (Club Bar @

* University of Sydney: October 23rd, 7pm

We hope you'll all come and check out the
talent at our Valhalla screening on
Sunday 29th - we've got drama, we've got
comedy, documentaries, experimental and
animated shorts.
