While the film makers sat sweating and the audiences sat entranced, the Reelife judges made their choices. And the word is out – Robbie McEwan's Toil and Trouble takes out the Best Film position, with it's generous bundle of prizes. But it wasn't an easy choice! Tom Dawkins, judge and National Coordinator of Vibewire:
"It was real a pleasure to watch such an outpouring of creativity by young filmmakers and we would have liked to have given them all a prize! In the end the winner selected was chosen because it innovated with form and structure, dealt with an important issue in an engaging way and showed a great deal of both playfulness and skill."
And the selection was (drum roll please!):
BEST FILM - Toil and Trouble - Robbie McEwan o SAE – a one-year course of the film maker's choice, worth $13,000. o AFTRS – 1 short course of their choice with a maximum value of $1,000 o Crumpler – 1 customised Reelife Crumpler messenger bag o Production Book – One copy, plus a one-year subscription to the online directory o Dendy – free double entry pass
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY - Dreams – Davey Sams o Sydney Film School - one weekend cinematography workshop valued at $800 o Crumpler – 1 Reelife Crumpler messenger bag o Dendy – free double entry pass
BEST UNDER 18 - Tony Gleed - I Am Grateful o Metro Screen - $400 towards short courses and equipment hire at Metro Screen o Crumpler – 1 customised Reelife Crumpler messenger bag o Dendy – free double entry pass
BEST DOCUMENTARY - Genevieve Bailey – Kompis o AFTRS – 1 short course of their choice with a maximum value of $1,000 o Crumpler – 1 customised Reelife Crumpler messenger bag o Dendy – free double entry pass
Reelife is all about supporting young film makers and promoting youth ideas through film, so we're thrilled with the feedback from Davey Sams, one of our winners:
"Entering the Reelife Film Festival was one of the best things I've ever done. It gave me the chance to showcase my film and have it seen all around Australia. The whole experience was very enjoyable and now with a Best Cinematography Award to my name already doors are starting to open. The Reelife Film Festival has given me the confidence to pursue filmmaking as a career."
Be sure and stay tuned for 2008!

Festival director
After two years as festival director, Bim Ricketson is handing back the reigns:
"It's been my great honour to work alongside Australia's young film-makers. It's now time for me to return to this fold myself (as a film-maker, not quite as young anymore!). I wish every future success to the Festival, and I am sure as long as great films are being made, a great festival will continue to thrive!"
Reelife in turn thank Bim for his part in two excellent festivals, and every success in the future.

Audiences should prepare themselves to question what they think our
young film makers are capable of. Get ready for characters that leap
from the screen and grab you by the scruff of the neck, pulling you
into astutely observed stories told directly from the heart. There's
the stylish "Too Far Gone", as created by a Cronulla teenager that
turns the Western genre on its head in a uniquely Australian way. Or
"Toil and Trouble", which explores workplace relations – but using
the
genre-bending techniques of early silent film.
And this year audiences have the chance to see how the locals stack up
against films by young Britons in our Best of Young British sessions.
Witness life as a young Muslim in London, or as the toughest teenage
girl in a seaside town. How do the local films stack up? You'll have
to watch and see!
Bim Ricketson - Festival Coordinator
Yes they may get the enviable job of handing out $25,000 worth of
fabulous prizes, but think of the pressure! With such depth of talent
in this year's field, their sweaty brows could fill the
Murray-Darling. And without further ado it with great pleasure that we
announce the judges for the 2007 Reelife Film Festival:
Marc Fennel
FBi 94.5 Movie Guy and so much more!
Pearl Tan
Pearl graduated from NIDA in 2005 and her most recent film Seeya Rach
screened on the opening night of the Mardi Gras Film Festival.
Melissa Azizi
Founder of CineDream.
Dean Francis
Directed ten short films which have had over 70 festival screenings
and won numerous awards.

NICE SHORTS
The 2007 Reelife Film Festival is proud to announce it's partnership
with Nice Shorts, an Australian based website that streams
international short films on the internet for free. Nice Shorts will
be screening finalists from the 2006 Reelife Film Festival as well as
Reelife 2007. With films as short as Sly Stallone's syllable range,
but with more substance than his bag at Customs, do yourself a favour
and check out more of the Reelife film repertoire at: Nice Shorts
<http://www.niceshorts.com.au/>
Nice Shorts is proud to be a media partner of the Reelife Film
Festival, a fantastic platform providing young, aspiring directors
with not only a chance to shine, but also - and most importantly - a
chance to get issues important to them on to a national stage. To be
Reelife's first ever online platform and to host the finalists' films
is a huge honour for the Nice Shorts team, and we hope giving the
filmmakers a global stage will lead to more voices being heard.

BEST OF YOUNG BRITISH
Don't forget, there's more excitement to Britain then Prince William's
love-life, and nothing can illustrate that better than our showcase of
short films from the youth of Britain. Held with the support of the
British Council, it's your chance to see how they stack up against our
local talent.
The British Council is a cultural relations organisation and we
believe that finding ways to understand and appreciate better what
people from different cultures and societies share in common and where
their differences lie makes a vital contribution to any nation's
international relations and reputation. The richness and diversity of
the emerging UK film industry is captured in this selection of the
Best of British short film programme, selected by Bim Ricketson and
the British Council and gives a snapshot of the issues being explored
by young film makers in the UK.
We're delighted to be working with Reelife and Vibe wire and we're
especially pleased to have the first international programme in the
Reelife Festival and to have the opportunity to share the best of UK
film making with the best from young Australian film makers. We hope
you enjoy the programme.

The 2007 Reelife Short Film Festival is a celebration of Australia's talented young filmmakers, with 15 amazing films scheduled for the National tour. This year's finalists represent the four points of the nation with contributions ranging from Margaret River WA, Reynella SA, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and more.
Young film makers of Australia have answered the call of the 2007 Reelife Short Film Festival with an incredible mix of intelligence, style and nuance that reflects a maturity and artistry that is very exciting for our next generation of filmmakers.
And this year, the festival has expanded to include extra screenings, including an out-of-competition Best of Young British screening of short films from the impressive young talent (15-25 year olds) Britain has to offer. Screened with the support of the British Council, it's your chance to see how our local talent stacks up against the edgy and innovative savviness of young British filmmakers.
Film maestro's Danny Boyle, Mike Leigh, Michael Winterbottom, Terry Gilliam and Christopher Nolan are just a handful of the great directors who were also once young and British, so you'll be mad as an Englishman in the midday sun to miss the arrival of the next order of British filmmaking!
Hope to see you there!

The Reelife Short Film Festival opens the end of April at the Dendy Cinema in Newtown, before heading around the country for a national tour. This year 15 of the best filmmakers aged under 25 will have their creative products showcased to audiences in Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. The Reelife Short Film Festival is an incredibly rewarding venture for young filmmakers, providing a unique platform on a national scale.
It's a hard job to whittle down such an impressive collection of films, but someone had to do it! The films this year were ever so good but if you would please be kind enough to provide a backing track of drum rolls and non-alcoholic sparkling wine corks popping!
This year's finalists for the Reelife Short Film Festival are:
1. David Zwolenski Vote For Jack West End, Brisbane, QLD
2. Matthew Chuang Drift Five Dock, Sydney, NSW
3. Davey Sams Dreams Surrey Hills, Melbourne, VIC
4. Alexander George Too Far Gone Cronulla, Sydney, NSW

13. Sascha Raeburn Skin And Fashion Burwood, Sydney, NSW
14. Tonnette Stanford Wally Randwick, Sydney, NSW
15. Jessica Thompson Hike Toongabbie, Sydney, NSW
This year's entries were the most geographically diverse ever, with over 50 entries coming from almost every state and territory (except something was distracting down in the Apple Isle), including an entry from Groote Eyland, NT, one stop past the Never Never! There is definitely going to be an eclectic palette of unique voices amongst this year's films.
Not only do the finalists get to have that warm and fuzzy feeling deep down, but they are also in the running to win some very fabulous prizes. Stay tuned for the announcement of fantastic prizes for 2007, which if last year is anything to go by, they will be extremely practical for making future films, and worth a lot of money! In 2006 the total prize value was approximately $25,000, ranging from a Sony HDV camera to a place in the summer school of Sydney Film School.

Reelife
is expanding rapidly, with more screenings than ever before and a
return to a full East Coast tour, along with an online component and
international content for the first time. So we're looking to expand
our team to help us stay on-top of all of it, meaning there's great
opportunities to become part of this Festival.
We
are looking for an Assistant Festival Director, to work with the
Festival Director across all aspects of the event. We are looking for
someone with a view to them staying involved and taking on more
responsibility for the 2008 Festival. This position is based in Sydney.
We are also looking for Reelife Coordinators in Canberra and Brisbane.

Time flies when you're having fun, but what a difference a week can make!Summer
is over and with the approach of the winter blues here is little ray of
sunshine to warm the cockles of your heart – Reelife's Call for Entries
has been extended by a week.
Due to overwhelming demand, the
Reelife Short Film Festival is pushing back the deadline for this
year's call for entries until March 12. If it took Martin Scorsese 30
years to finally win an Oscar, it's likely that an extra week of spit
and polish time will come in handy for aspiring Reelife entrants!
But
don't be confused, the only thing that's changed is the date. Reelife
is still looking for the same standard of creative and innovative
excellence from the young filmmakers of our country. Films can be of
any genre, and on any topic. So if you're aged between 15 and 25 and
have a story to tell, make sure you take advantage of the extension and
get your film in by the new date.
Reelife will be screened in
April in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra, and offers a
fantastic opportunity to young filmmakers to get their foot in the
door, and their films screened to a national audience. Excellent prizes
are on hand to assist in continuing the winners' careers, including the
newly created prize for Best Animation.
The deadline for The Reelife Short Film Festival 2007 is rapidly approaching, and you're going to be more confused than Marcus Einfeld if you miss out on entering this year.
So what can you do about it? If you're aged between 15 and 25, pick up a camera and show Australia what you're made of! At Reelife, films can be on any theme or topic, the content is only limited by your imagination. Reelife 2007 aims to be a beautiful collage of all the unique experiences of what it is to be a young Australian, so no matter who you are or where you live or what you believe in, Reelife wants to hear your stories. Entries close on 5 March, so its time to post-haste and get filming!
The Festival will hold its Gala Opening Night in Sydney in April, where finalists will be judged by a panel of industry representatives. Then Reelife will be hitting the road, with screenings to take place in Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra. Last year's Festival saw entries from all the over the country, so this will provide hometown support for many more of our finalists, as well as the chance for these cities to watch some great films by young Australians.
There are great prizes to be won to help with your career, including the chance for a young filmmaker to win the newest award – Best Animation. Last year winners enjoyed such fabulous prizes as a Sony HDV camera HDR-HC1E, $5,000 worth of hire of film equipment from Panavision, $10,000 worth of hire from Premier Lighting and one place in Sydney Film School's summer course.
This year the Festival is also proud to present "The Best of Young British", a collection of short films from young British film makers, to be screened alongside the main competition, and held in conjunction with the British Council.
Reelife is a creative project of Vibewire Youth Services, a non-profit youth media organisation established to provide forums and platforms for youth expression through arts and media.
For all of the information you're after or to download an entry form, all you need to do is head to www.vibewire.net/Reelife <http://www.vibewire.net/Reelife> And the best news? The entree fee for Reelife 2007 is lower then your city's dam level, in fact at $10 (+GST), you may just want to enter twice!
After a sold out 2006 season, The Reelife Short Film Festival returns bigger and better then ever in 2007, and is calling for films from young people about the matters that stir their creative juices!
Are generation Y really the generation that chase no rainbows? Do they know the difference between globalisation and global warming? Are they interested in more then just the latest Paris and Lindsay stoush? Reelife believes Australian youth are full of great ideas and opinions, and provide a hugely successful platform to share them with as many people as possible.
The Reelife Short Film Festival is aimed squarely at Australia's youth, and unlike festivals that reward filmmakers for slick effects and gimmicky endings, Reelife encourages films with strong ideas and a knack for innovative storytelling. Recognising that young people in this country come from all walks of life, the films can be on any theme or topic with no signature items required. So if you're aged between 15 and 25 with a story to tell, Reelife is the soapbox for you!
After its success in Sydney in 2006, the 2007 festival will venture out of the Harbour City and become a national event, with screenings to be also held in Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra. This will not only give people better access around the country to these great films, but will also be a more comprehensive reflection of the filmmakers themselves, with last year's festival attracting entrants from all over Australia.
The new entry deadline is March 5, from which a short list of finalists will be chosen to be screened in capital cities throughout April. Finalists will be judged by a panel of industry representatives on the Gala Opening Night in Sydney with great prizes to be won including a new award for Best Animation. Last year winners enjoyed such fabulous prizes as a Sony HDV camera HDR-HC1E, $5,000 worth of hire of film equipment from Panavision, $10,000 worth of hire from Premier Lighting and one place in Sydney Film School's summer course.

Things have been a bit delayed for Reelife this year. Part of the reason for this is that Festival Director Bim Ricketson has been in Qatar working on the Asian Games opening and closing ceremonies for the last several months which is pretty cool. He'll be back early January and will send you an update for what he's been up to then.
Meanwhile it is my great pleasure to announce the launch of the Call for Entries for Reelife 2007!
As you contemplate a summer which I hope is filled with laughter, relaxation and creativity you may also want to start thinking about a film you can enter into the Reelife Short Film Festival 2007.
As you know Reelife Short Film Festival was established to provide a space for young Australians 15-25 to explore their world through film. Unlike other festivals where the focus is purely on technique Reelife is firmly about the content.
We believe that film is a powerful medium to tell stories, reveal points of view and promote issues and ideas. We invite all young filmmakers to think about the things you care about, the unique perspective you have to share, the aspect of your life and your community you want to reveal, and to create a film in any style up to ten minutes in length for consideration for the Reelife Short Film Festival.
For next years festival we are pleased to announce a new category, Best Animation, along with those presented this year. The full category list is:
-Best Film
-Best Under-18s
-Best Cinematography
-Best Documentary
-Best Animation
-Audience Choice
In other exciting news Reelife will be returning to a multi-state tour after the lower-key festival held this year. In 2007 Reelife will screen in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra in partnership with Dendy Cinemas.

Dear friends and supporters of Reelife Short Film Festival,
As you would know Reelife is a project of Vibewire Inc, a youth-led non-profit media and arts organisation.Vibewire is dedicated to creating opportunities for younger Australians to express themselves on the issues and cultures that matter to them, including, of course, through film. We believe this work is vital in inspiring, engaging and providing opportunities for young people to put their concerns on the table and be heard in our society.
Vibewire has just launched our first-ever public fundraising appeal and we'd love your support to make it a success. As an organisation without any core (or ongoing) funding we rely primarily on grants to operate, but in order to continue to survive we need to fill the gaps in-between and, like most community organisations, we require community support to do this.
We are incredibly proud of what Vibewire has been able to achieve over the last few years, and with your help we can do even more in the years to come. We have a great 2007 planned, including creating unique and engaging youth-focused coverage of the 2007 federal election, opening the sQuareOne media, arts and community space, seeing Reelife Short Film Festival returning to Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane and launching the next Interface Anthology of new youth writing at the Sydney Writers Festival in May next year. But without great support these projects will be put in doubt. In order to get there and continue to create these sorts of opportunities we need to diversify the sources of our funding and be more proactive in fundraising. This is the important first step in that direction.
But we're not just asking for money for nothing, we've got some great packages of Vibewire products for those who show support (just in time for Christmas as they say). These include the Vibewire 2007 desktop calendar filled with great photography, the Reelife 2006 DVD, magazines and the chance to support young people accessing the sQuareOne space, to open in February 2007.

Welcome to Reelife 2006. I would like to introduce myself as the new coordinator of the festival. My name is Bim Ricketson, I live in Sydney and I myself am a young film maker with something to say. I'm very excited about Reelife and the platform it gives young people to express themselves. I'm also looking forward to all the stuff we will be putting in place over the next 12 months to grow the festival in all sorts of cool ways. You'll hear more about our plans soon.
But this is 2006 and this is now the official call for entries for this year's festival!
We have some great prizes lined up, including a Sony HD camera! The screening/s will be in Sydney Dendy in May. As always you'll need to be under 25 years old and have a film of 10 minutes or less about an issue that's important to you. You'll need to deliver the film to us by March 20th 2006 on a VHS, DVD or Mini DV, with a signed entry form and an $11.00 cheque.
If you have already submitted a film, thankyou! We have logged your films and we will be watching them together with all the new ones that come in. You still qualify if you've turned 26 since you submitted. Thanks for your patience.
And if you know of anyone else that would be interested please pass on this message or guide them to the website.
Please note that the call for entries deadline for Reelife Short Film Festival
has changed to
mid-March.
Our website, which is in the process of being updated, will soon reflect this
and other
exciting new changes! - so keep checking back there.
Cheers,
/Reelife Team

Just forwarding info about a great OzDox event, all about "Emerging
Documentary Filmmakers" - it involves an open discussion + screening of
short docs, and will be held at UTS campus on October 13th in the evening.
Please pass it on to all interested parties!!
Cheers,
Dee
/Reelife Coordinator
P.S. OzDox is not a partner of Reelife, but I think that generally anything
that benefits emerging filmmakers, and is non-profit - both of which are
integral parts of the the Reelife philosophy - is worth promoting.
Reelife has formed a partnership with “The Salon”, Sydney’s monthly arts and
debate night.
We have the opportunity to screen a few short films at each event, and for the
filmmakers to get up and speak (if they wish).
The next event is this Thursday: 25th August. The theme “IS CIVIL LIBERTY A LIABILITY” will be discussed, + screening a film on civil rights and the new terror laws. Flyer is attached.
For NEXT month, we are looking for short films that relate to the theme: WHY I HATE AMERICA.
We aren’t looking for cheap shots at the expense of the land of freedom: that would be too easy. So if you have something that tackles the idea originally, intelligently, cinematically, then this is a good chance to screen and be part of the debate.
Film under ten minutes and in any genre or style will be considered – not just docos.
The Salon event is on Thursday September 29th.
If you think you have a short film that in any way, shape or form relates to the state of the nation, then email reelifefestival@....

Dee Jefferson

P.S. My views do not in any way shape or form represent what I actually think: I may hate America; on the other hand, it is far more likely that I am very curious about America, and would like to live in New York. It’s hard to tell.
Some very cool ladies in Sydney put on a monthly short film night at the Tapp Gallery (Darlinghurst). I am forwarding their call for submissions, as I’m sure some of this list will welcome the chance to be screened!
Miaow,
Reelife Team
Independent film caught short at the tap gallery!! Call for short film submissions. Tapes or DVD’s received this month will be considered for screening
Thursday 1st September.
Any films received after this time will be considered for future screenings.
Films can be sent to PO BOX 908, NEWTOWN 2042
All Films will be returned. Please complete the attached submissions form.
CAUGHT SHORT is an indy short film night held the first Thursday of the month at the TAP Gallery in Darlinghurst. It aims to provide a space for up and coming film makers to show and discuss their work… as well as providing access to stories and messages we just don't get to see else where!!! It's a not for profit gig run by a couple of short film enthusiasts, keen to get the voices of the masses heard!
We welcome submission of original films for screening consideration at the next instalment. Films can be any length up to 30 mins and we invite a wide range of subjects and styles. Films can be submitted on VHS or DVD and should have been completed within the last 2 years.
* IMPORTANT BREAKING REELIFE NEWS! *
As many people will have heard, the Valhalla Cinema in Glebe (Reelife’s screening home!) recently closed its doors. Sadly, this closure looks permanent. Even worse, the Chauvel has been scheduled to close at the end of September. These leaves many people and orgnisations (including festivals) in Sydney in a predicament.
In this context, we have made a decision to adjust the Reelife schedule, in anticipation of finding a new permanent home.
YES there's movement at the Reelife ranch, and the movement is full steam ahead for MARCH next year, which is the NEW REELIFE SCREENING LAUNCH!! Having been held in September and October since it started in 2002, the Reelife festival is now making a strategic decision to screen at a time that will make it more accessible for university students. Very exciting news for the Reelife team, and hopefully not too disappointing for our entrants!
The new screening launch is also planned to coincide with our hope to launch an online screening space. What does this mean? It means a new part of the Vibewire/reelife website where people can view a selection of Reelife entries from the last 4 years and onwards. This is a positive new collaboration between the Vibewire.net and Reelife branches of Vibewire Youth Services. MOST IMPORTANTLY, an online screening space would greatly advance our mission to become accessible to as many young people as possible.
The NEW CALL FOR ENTRIES deadline for Reelife will be at the end of February, and anyone interested in youth voices generally, their community, or advocating for their pet issue, is encouraged to use the extra time to make something new, bold and original for Reelife 2006. This is one of the few festivals where all you need is a good idea, passion and a 1-chip camera!
We can only give our biggest APOLOGIES to those filmmakers who have already submitted work: please rest assured that your work will be held safely for the judging process early next year.
All other conditions of entry to the Reelife Festival remain the same, and there WILL be spectacular prizes. So get out and active, an eye to the heavens and an ear to the ground for news via pony or carrier-pigeon. Or just keep checking the Reelife website at www.vibewire.net/reelife.
Please pass this on to your networks!
CALL FOR ENTRIES DEADLINE: AUGUST 12th 2005
