I may be back in time for this Sundays Glorious run, but maybe not ?????

I reckon i could give Casey Stoner a run for his money now that I have completed
the Advanced Cornering and Road Kill Avoidance rider training course, (doing a
lap of Tassie)
I am lucky I won a set of Michelin tyres at the NSR as I will need them when I
get back , if not before. I think I need ones with thicker side tread if I come
to Tassie again, as most of the time your at a 45' or more lean for the
hairpins.
Glorious has nothing on the roads in Tassie, Friggin' AWESOME , did I mention
how AWESOME the riding is there, well its Friggin' AWESOME. You know you want to
go and ride there dont you........
Well I am in Melbourne at my brother in laws for 2 days, while I recover from
the awesomeness of tassie and will do a little shopping.
Bike is running OK for the moment but is now in need of its next 5000k service
and I still have 2000k to do to get home, hope the tyres last...
Will upload pics when I get back and do a more indepth travel blog with details
as did do some notes...
Gotta go check to see if my washing is done so I dont smell like a smelly
scooterist covered in bug splatter anymore ( I'm typing this in a pair of boxers
and a smile :-)

Cya in a few days after a pleasurably slow ride up the coast back to Brisvages.

BFG (Bald Fat Guy) on a scooter

Hello Everyone,

I have just uploaded the 2009 Scooteroo calendar in the "File" section
of this website. As I mentioned it has a column for people who are
interested in organising a scooter run, planning the route, check the
destination and getting involved. Most day runs require less then

We have a scooter run for Breaky up to Mt Glorious next Sunday. See you
then.

Thanks for the love (might pass on that) but really good to hear
you're safe, mobile and having fun, despite the heat. You'll welcome
coming back to Queensland's balmy 30-degree days.

Hey Everyone,

After the Scooteroo planning ride to Mt Glorious in January we have
worked through alot of the ideas/events and the calendar is nearly
finished. When the calendar comes out there will be a column for the
person looking after the organising of the run. Instead only 2 or 3
people planning all the rides we would like a more broard approach for
everyone to be involved. So when the calendar comes out don't be shy
put your hand up and get involved :)

Cheers,

Benito

p.s. The 24hr scooter race is on the 14th/15th of Feb, mark it in your
diary and take a ride to the Gold Coast, cheer us on and catch some of
the action.

Hey Jared,

Tyres: This is a tricky one to predict tyre wear especially on a maxi
scooter that gets doubled on regularly. The other side of the
equation is the level of tyre grip you want/need, because with
harder, longer wearing tyre you compromise grip. Look at V-Rubber or
Michelin but you can speak to Dave at Scooterlife for his
recommendation too.

Servicing: There is no harm is servicing you scooter before it makes
the 5000km service interval and this won't affect your warranty. It
would affect your warranty if the scooter was serviced after the
recommended service interval. Also there is time interval as well, if
it had been 12months since you last service it would need to come in
regardless if the scooter had travelled only 100km for example. I
know that your scooter hasn't passed the time limit or kms limit but
I thought you would like a bit of background info ;-)

Let me know how you go :)

Hi Kids,
Couldnt get to a PC last night so you missed the Canberra edition of the old fat bald guy on the ride to Tassie.
So now an update from sunny Melbourne... I made it to Melbourne via Tamwoth 1st night, Canberra last night and today via the Hume and Gunadah, Glennrowan and other places.
It was 49c today or so my Vespa told me, every time I opened the visor it was like looking in the oven.
HOT DAMN HOT it was, then 75k out from Melb it dropped from 42 or so to 27 and then my hands were cold, weird Vicwegien weather.
If you ever get to Sydney I throughly recommend doing the putty road, not better then sex but close, and it is better then Glorious, only because its longer....
Well now I have 3 nights till the ferry leaves and am planning on doing some sight seeing and catching up with rellies.
So will update when things change again.

uuurghhh....there goes that idea.  I have been tempted to put some light up ones on the scooter for the hover bike effect hehe.
Then again I am coming home from work in the light most of the time, at this time of year anyway.

-Nathan

2009/1/16 Rob <rpmorrell@...>

Another thing I've read about of a rider's personal encounter of a
sudden & complete tyre blowout caused by using bling valves caps. The
flashing LED ones have a small battery which adds weight.

If the valve is a 90-degree one then that extra centrifugal weight is
flexing the valve, & in this case, made the valve pop out, causing the
rider to crash from the sudden deflation.

colours Red, Green,Yellow, to show how the air in the tyres were. I

never had a problem with this set up and I never had to put any air in

after a few weeks I found my back tyre was half flat and after a while
I found out this happened because the extension valve was  bigger

it was letting air out but the front wheel was all right. I am writing

Hi Scooteroos

This is a general question addressed to anyone with knowledge about
tyre brands, and service intervals.

Tyres:

My rear tyre is starting to get to the point where I'm monitoring it
on a week to week basis for safety. I have a little over 4000KM, so
from reports on Modern Vespa forum, that's pretty good wear for a
GTS23 tyre.

I wanted to know what tyre would be best suited for my MP3,
considering that I pillion regularly. Scooterlife team - do you have
an answer for this one from experience? My aim is to get a tyre that
will last for 5000km, so I can have it changed at each scheduled
service. That way, I don't have to pay that much extra to have the
tyre changed (as half the scooter is dismantled to get to the rear
brakes anyhow). :)

Service interval:

I am already aware that the service interval for the scoot is every
5000KM. What is the 'earliest' I could book the scoot in for its oil
change and check? Anywhere between now and 5000K? :) Or does it have
to be within 500km of the milestone?

Thanks for your help with my questions as usual :)

I've been using an ATC2K cam on the bike for some while, now, because of all the crazy stuff that I see on my journeys on the roads:-

cagers & quarry trucks going wide on corners (using up your bit of "oncoming" road);
desperados whom don't like the notion of Shel doing 100Kph on her bike, & MUST OVERTAKE in sometimes stupid places;
impatient dumbasses whom overtake on twisty doubles when stuck behind a slow climbing truck;
un-licensed & un-registered underagers speeding around;
Fossils whom can't even see the road & don't know which century we're in;
Hippies in smokey $hitboxes (& ya not sure whether it's grass smoke);
clueless yuppy 4WD mad mums;
 TRADIES;
all sorts of cattle (even had deer the other day, & Shel's seen a monster turtle);
& the occassional w/e warriors en-masse that you're likely to see losing it on corners.......just to stereotype a few out here.

I recently got the mounting of the cam sorted & bought Shelley the newer ATC3K.

Finally got out on the bikes with both our cameras running & reasonably sorting in regards to mounting.  Me with the ATC2K & Shel with the ATC3K

I'll be pasting in bits from here & there so the syntax may be a bit weird.

Firstly, the image quality with both cams is much better on my pc than it appears on Youtube.

Secondly, you may want to mute sound for the 1st part of the vid as it's my noisy 2K even though I've taped up the mic.
My 2K has always been affected by engine electrical noise whereas the 3K seems good.

The 3K display is pretty much the same as before with a few minor changes to the actual menu & how it's displayed.
Both cameras are very fiddly with trying to scroll through the minute menu to dump unwanted footage & change settings etc.

The 3K seems to have better sound & is more suited to the bike because of wind noise cut.

The 2K will not accept a 4Gb card, & wont even start up.
Battery runtime looks like about 3 hours or more on 2 x AA rechargeables.

I suspect the visuals are slightly better with the 3K, & it may showup better when I do an exact comparison on the exact same piece of road.
I didn't get much footage from my 2K as the cam pivoted itself upwards a little, maybe from the clamp packing getting compressed.
The 3K's wider viewing angle is only a very small improvement over the 2K.
You can see though, if you have a camera with a wider viewing angle then getting the camera set-up isn't such a hassle.

Bang for Buck they're an ok camera.

Here's my ATC2K vs ATC3K comparison vid. The image doesn't look so good on Youtube: much sharper on the pc.

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=7NDb3Bu5AWg

The next 2 vids are good reviews from overseas.
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=PG5HZuRKLvg

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=5VQFzgrFBro

Which now brings me to how I secured the cam to the helmet.....

There is an aftermarket helmet mount on Ebay, but I didn't buy this because it will interfere with my visor & vents etc.

I made my own helmet mount that attaches to the visor by velcro as pictured.

Araldited the spikey wide velcro to a rainwater tank fitting (cut in two) from Bunnings.

Fluffy velcro attached to spikey velcro to hold it flat while it's Araldited to the visor: thought it better to have maximum contact & strength from the velcro, & make the Araldite fill in the contours of the visor. I already tested if the Araldite on an old visor to make sure it didn't melt.

Used the supplied bar mount to mount it to my made-up fitting.

Safety zip ties go through helmet strap.

Everything held together well on a 250K trip recently, going up to national speed limit.
The ATC2K sound is improved with a bit of tape over the mic.

Rob,

I am getting itchy feet and want to get back onto a little cranky
50cc and I know I am not the only one. We are wanting to get some
practice in for the 24hr.

All dressed up and know where to go as they say.

Hi Kids,
Couldnt get to a PC last night so you missed the Canberra edition of the old fat bald guy on the ride to Tassie.
:-)

Looks like early March is the earliest we might be able to get some time at Lakeside small circuit.
They'll get back to me at the end of Feb.

Ipsich Kart Track is coming alonog nicely with the re-surface, though still no news about the use of the track.

Anyone know of some closed roads or private carparks where we can have a blat???

Made it to Tamworth and am at the YHA.
Was up at 6 and out by 7:30 and made it here 4:30 QLD time.
Got rained on just outside of Armidale for 15km or so but that was the only
issue on a loverly ride so far.
Am knackered now though as I didnt sleep real well last night as I was bit
excited.
Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of travels with the Old Bald Fat Guy

Happy New Year Scooteroos !!! I hope you all had a wonderful christmas
and festive period. I have been scanning your calender to ensure that I
can get myself on your next available sunday ride... I just missed your
ride on the 11/01/09... so I am guessing that the next one will be
25/1/2009 ????????? Well I shall get excited about that one !
I did some travel overseas over the festive season and ended up with
one day in Rome. I located a little tour, where you can be a pillion
passenger on "Vintage Vespas" and be taken around the sights of Rome
for four or so hours ! Oh guys... I felt like I was a chubby Audry
Hepburn in the movie Roman Vacation !! It was exhilarating. I took
coffee with a 1977 Rally 200 to my left and the Colosseum straight in
front of me !! It was a sunday, so I only got to drool on the window
of a Vespa Shop in the heart of the city !
Hope to see you all soon on a great ride !! Jools

Hey everyone,

For those who haven't seen the latest SCOOTER mag, Issue 21, there is a
large feature article on the event. The event got a great plug and
there are quite a few pictures so you and your scooter might feature in
the story :)

Boreen Point 09 will be bigger and better than ever.

Cheers,

Benito
