After 2 years of delay (some by my own slackness) the ex NZ yellow
Rapier fastback was finally complianced today. Being a 1974 model it
had to comply with some extra rules including highback seats,
collapsible steering column, tyre placard plus at the last minuite I
needed to manufacture an emission compliance tag. It will be registered
later in the week and driven around till it is sold. Then I can start
on the next fastback project plus my Variety Bash Hunter wagon.

Thanks for the run down on your car. Fastbacks are relatively rare
in Australia and I am trying to sell one at present but here it is
an unusual car people may not know about so they stay clear.
I am hoping to do a car in lime green next year.
I will email you off group about some parts I am looking for .
Great to see the group taking off some more.
Rod G.
ps. Vic . I have ordered about 7 copies of the callendar so everyone
here gets one for christmas.

Hi all,
Just thought I would drop you a line and post some pictures in the
photo section. Green Monster, as my sister's kids named her, is my
second Rapier; brought January 2006, my first (owned from mid
nineties) is still dissolving on the drive...
GM is a '72 bog standard fastback, in a nice metallic green, made a
few days before I was born. She had sat for three years in a farmer's
field; about fifty miles from my home in North Wales. The seller was
a qualified mechanic (so am I) who was semi retired and had a huge
collection of Rootes cars that he wanted to slim down. He had given
the car a brake service and engine/brake fluids a change before I
drove her back. Apart from a few stops caused by an air leak in the
glass fuel bowl on top of the fuel pump, she drove beautifully. Once
this seal was found (Ba**ard to get here), she did at least 8000
miles that year before being taken off the road September 07. All she
needed for the MOT was a bit of wielding and a headlamp bulb. Not bad
for a car left standing in damp, North Wales for three years! The
seats have been replaced with some more comfortable seats from god
knows what, but I kind of like them and they are a good match for the
original rears.
Rapiers are not that loved in the UK. I don't know why. I paid £300
for mine in a bidding war on E bay. Yet everywhere I take it, I get
loads of people wanting to talk and have a closer look. My '69 was
brought for £150 about ten years ago, had also been standing for a
few years in the open and she too needed little more than a few
plates wielding in to pass the dreaded MOT. Great cars!
I have seen Rapiers and Alpines failing to reach £300 recently, which
is surprising when Capri's are going for stupid prices in the UK,
especially the Mk1. I have owned both and I know I would rather have
a Rapier than a 1300/1600cc Crapy for five times the price.
Anyway, GM will have some needed bodywork this spring, if it ever
stops raining ... and I will use my dead red '69 for parts, but have
plans for that car too. I am planning to fit a diesel into her and as
the rear end is now quite rotten around roof rear pillars, I might
make a sort of Ute/pick up. Anyone know of any Diesel conversions or
Pick up conversions? I will update photos when I finish GM and put on
a few of 'dead red'.
Its nice to find a group for these great cars, and I will keep
dropping in to see if anyone else has written about or posted pics of
their cars.
Regards to all,
Mr Skahoovey
Oh, if anyone needs parts located in the UK, I am more than happy to
help out.
Hi Folks,
It's ready for purchase, next years calendar featuring 13 full colour
pics of cars of the Rootes group (and some of their antecedents).
Calendar is A4 in size, full colour, spiral bound, printed on quality
paper. Rods Rapier is featured and there are four other Sunbeam
pictures including Mk Alpines and a Harrington LeMans Alpine.
There are two versions:
Australian Holidays and US Holidays. The links to BUY them are:
Australian - http://www.lulu.com/content/1418572
US - http://www.lulu.com/content/1236678
Pictures are the same in both versions and can be previewed at this
link:
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o262/sunalp63/compo-2.jpg
Please note that the preview pics are low resolution - the calendar
ones are very much better quality.
As always, this is a not-for-profit venture with pics donated from
around the world, many thanks to those who contributed
Cheers, Vic
WELCOME TO THE NEW MEMBERS.
The Rapier group is slowly climbing and I hope a new initiative will
help it grow more in the next few months. Apart from my other jobs
and racing etc I also write for leaded Magazine about Classic Cars
etc and Leaded is about to launch a new website on which i will list
details of our group.
On my own update
My 74 ex NZ Rapier Fastback is up for sale in trading post plus
Unique Cars magazine etc at $10,500 negotiable. bearing in mind this
is a very nice car that is rare in Australia I don't think the price
is un fair but I need to clear it so am open to offers.
Recently I travelled to Sydney and picked up a rusty Rapier that
will be good for some parts for the others.
My other ex Sydney fastback is destined for a restoration next year
but will be delayed by my build of a Hunter wagon for the Variety
Bash in October.
My race Rapier continues to improve and impress. I recently raced at
Noosa Hill Climb and apart from some understeer it went very well.
The front strut tops are about to be changed to fully adjustable
Commodore tops so I can get some more angle on the front end. Next
race and last for the year is at Mt Cotton Hill Climb near Brisbane
on the first Sunday of December. Next year it cops a new nose,
distributor and some other improvements to get a few more Hp out of
the rear wheels.
Thanks to Vic for putting the photo of my car in the Rootes Group
Callendar. It is certainly one to get for 2008.
Rod G.
Welcome to the new members. I am slowly putting together a bit of
info on the Rapiers and will post them soon.
My collection now stands at 4 fastback rapiers.
The first- yellow ex New Zealand fastback is advertised in
Australia's Unique Cars magazine at the end of October so I need to
get a few things done to compliance it. basically I bought a rusty
Rapier from Sydney a few weeks ago and it was fitted with highback
seats trimmed to the rapier style. They are being painted in vinyl
paint at present to natch and then add a mirror and two reversing
lights and the car is finished after 2 years.
The ex Sydney car sat for 23 years. It had genuine minilite wheels
but corrosion has set in so a clean up is in order for them. The
interior was very good and it originated from the same location as
my mustard 72 Fastback. Engine is seized and I will be potographing
the rusty areas so everyone knows where to treat with anti rust oil
etc. The O/d gearbox is there but unsure about the standard 4.22
diff as it has Hunter drums on the back (fitted with balance weights
on a covex drum against a flat no weight drum)
I am chasing windscreen rubbers for front and back if anyone has a
contact for that.
The mustard car will become lime green and be fitted with chrome
Dragway Indy wheels I have with white wall tyres so shoul look the
part.
the Race Rapier has been sitting for a few weeks but will get out
this weekend for a test as the Noosa Clasic Hill Climb is on in a
few weeks and I need to blow the cobwebs out. I am hoping for a wet
track as the nexen CP 185/60 x 13 tyres are fantastic in the wet
against my 205/60x13 Toyo proxes in the dry.
Look forward to more regular posts in the future and feel free to
post some details on your own rapiers or other sunbeams on this site.
Rod G.
The race Rapier went to Leyburn sprints with a new engine and lots of
hope in August but technical problems let me down. The new holbay
engine was dynoed at 105hp and seemed fine but on the track the carbies
were starving of fuel up the back straight and the handling wasn't up
to standard. On arrival back home it went up on jacks and a larger fuel
line run and filter run after the mechanical pump. Exhaust was changed
to 2 and a quarter inch & More cooling insulation was added and then
the front struts changed to Commodore and lowering blocks fitted to the
rear. Speed on tweed event was a good initiation and the car ran
faultlessly all weekend but rain hampered times and brakes were a bit
so so. Next mod is to move the booster back to the firewall and change
the front pads and or discs as well. The Rapier certainly gets some
interest at the tracks and is certainly a ball of fun to drive now.
Presently 110 hp at the rear wheels but with the electronic dizzy
ready, a locked diff just arrived and some more suspension tweeks the
hill climb at Noosa in November should be a good one for more fun.

After much frustration the holbay engine in the race Rapier is running
With Leyburn sprints in a week and a half there is much to do with the
roll cage and other parts but at least we have some life in it now.
After Leyburn I'll get some more reports on the site as I'll have a bit
more time plus need to get into the other Rapiers and hunters again.

It looks very interesting and i will read it with gusto , and look around for it in CNA - South Africa.
I am fetching my 1962 Sunbeam Rapier Series 111 A next week from Johannesburg.
I can't wait, from the photo's i can see it is in mint condition.

Jannie.

Boardwalk for $500? In 2007? Ha! Play Monopoly Here and Now (it's updated for today's economy) at Yahoo! Games.
I have just had some good news ! My friend Piet found a Sunbeam Rapier series 3A for sale and i phoned the guy, and i will go up to JHB next week and see the car. I am sure i will get it.
There is a doner car to go with it as well.
The present owner says both cars are in very good nick.

My address is : J.A. Neethling , PO Box 40409, Richards Bay, Veld en Vlei, South Africa, 3900.
I went and had a look at a Hillman Super Minx convertable that a guy has stored in his backyard , must be around 1955 model or so, with the Peugot engine. Many spares.
It is still nice, but stripped. But i want a Rapier. Maybe someone is interested on your side ? Rod Graydon <automarine@...> wrote:

What would it cost me in Rands to import the whole lot as is to South Africa Rod ?

Go to www.tradme.co.nz and in the search section put in Sunbeam Rapier. It shows an early model Rapier Race car for targa etc for $15000 NZ. car with everything you can get in. If anyone decides to do it send me an e mail and I'll fill you in on importing a car from NZ. Rod G.

I'll get the details for the magazine as it is only 12 months old
and you may need to buy it by subscription. I am sure the editor
would be excited about the magazine going to South Africa as they
are passionate about what they do and if you get the Rapier i will
get a small article published for you. Good luck with the purchase.

I have been asked by leaded magazine to write an article on Importing vehicles so am using my Rapier Fastback NZ import as an example. If you haven't found leaded magazine yet ask your
Newsagent for a copy. LEADED comes from the use of Leaded Petrol in older vehicles and they cover historic motorsport and other activities. Great reading and another local specialised product to support.
On the Hunter front my yellow wagon is nearing completion after 3 years. the seats will go in this week and then it is a few cosmetic things including changing doors to having opening quarter glasses etc and then it is on the road. My Rapier and Nissan patrol will be confined to the garage as I test my new toy - With Rapier O/D gearbox of course.

Anybody know whether Prince Rainier's custom convertible fastback
Rapier survives today in a drivable form? I just saw a promotion on tv
for the Monaco GP and there was a brief glimpse of what looked to me
like the Rapier being driven. It was recent footage, not historical
stuff.
I've just been trying to think whether there's some other convertible
that could pass for a Rapier at a very quick glance. About all I can
come up with is a Jensen Interceptor droptop.

Welcome to the new members to our slowly increasing group.
Over the next few weeks I intend updating the site with some more
photos and info and once I go onto broadband internet this will be
more frequent.
Updates on my cars are
The orange Rapier fastback should receive it's new engine in the
coming weeks.
Hunter block bored oversize with toyota pistons etc. Holbay head
from englnad, camshaft from David Craw in Christchurch NZ, fully
balanced with lightened crank and flywheel and twin 40 mm delorto
carbies on a custom manifold. This should make the fastback a little
quicker in competition. The roll cage gets extended from half to
full next week to stiffen the body and the front end will get
lowered. bring on Mt Cotton Hill Climb on 22 and 29 April
The yellow Hunter wagon is to be finished by a mate and it will be
my drive car. Mazda Astina yellow paint work, twin carb iron head
engine with 3 core radiator & alloy sump. Hunter 660 / Humber
sceptre MK 3 restored dash & door tops, Rapier overdrive gearbox and
black minilight style wheels with white wall tyres and a matching
tear drop camper
My ex NZ Rapier fastback should finally be complianced in the next
few weeks and will then be for sale.
The mustard fastback will then be stripped back and painted in
british racing green with superlight wheels and the engine currently
in the race fastback bolted in to have a nice weekend show / drive
car.
Post a message with details of your cars and lets get the group
going.

ps check out the messages on yahoo group - Hillman Cars and Hillman
Hunters.
Appologies for not pushing the group a bit more but I wondered whether
it was being found under the present yahoo address.
Tomorrow - Sunday I race the orange Fastback Rapier at the Mt Cotton
Hill Climb near Brisbane. Should be fun and also this is the first
round of a series so it should give me a comparison of my times against
other cars with the standard engine and times when i fit the Holbay
motor in a few months time. At the Rootes Group day two weeks ago I
debuted the ex NZ Rapier and now have two photos that I will mount on
the wallat work. One is of the Rwpier with Lake Taupo 9NZ) in the
background and the other is of the Rapier with Moreton bay ocean in the
background so I have the rare situation of a watery background to
photos of a car in two different countries. This car wilL be for sale
soon.- fully complianced. My third fastback- presently mustard colour
will get the british racing green treatment in a few months which
should make it a treat as a nice weekend drive car.
cheers

Welcome to the new Yahoo Group for Sunbeam Rapier vehicles. I invite
owners and fanciers of all Sunbeam Rapiers (Series and Fastbacks) and
Alpine Fastbacks to join this group and discuss stories of their
vehicles and their current and future adventures.
I have commenced this group as a specific group due to my ownership and
interest in Rapiers and desire to communicate directly with other
owners throughout the world. I can also reccomend the yahoo Groups for
Hillman Cars and Hillman Hunters as being friendly groups where many
problems have beensolved and parts interchanged throughout the world.
Whilst I am currently the owner of 3 fastback Rapiers it is my desire
to one day own a Series Rapier Convertible.
