after having my bike sit in the garage for more than 3 years I've
decided to make a psecial out of it. So keep a look out on ebay soon
for parts such as wheels, forks, swing arm, shock, plastics tank etc.

Most parts need some work beacuase I t-boned a tray ute and I haven't
seen the bike and bits since 2001, but the person who's house it is in
will hopefully give some more details.

Guys, can anyone tell me the standard gearing for the GF 250.
As bought mine had engine 13, rear wheel 45.

Hi Carl

ah the Choke, yeah I've used plenty of that. I'll chance the leads and check the
coils. I'll try and do that next week.

I let you know how I go.

Thanks again.

In the service manual it states resistances for the coil primary and
secondary circuits (page 5-16 at the back) - It might pay to check them
all with a meter. Changing the leads over would be quick too (if
they're stuffed).

The easy out sounds like a winner - if you can get one that small..

The enrichment system is the choke. It's two little cable driven,
spring loaded plungers that screw into the back of both the
carburettors; you'd know if you didn't hook it up.

Thanks Carl

Pete was good he did the valve clearances very quikly. The other carbies on the
other bike have 2 jammed up air jet screws. So no luke there.

Spark seems good, but I will try the other coils and leads off the other bike.
I was thinking easy out will be the only option it is fused stuck.
The Enrichment system, now that sounds good. Where is that located?

When I finally did get it going and warmed up it sounded great. It was slow to
rev up to around 5 but then once warm it was smooth reving from 5-11k

It is starting to become promising.

Thanks for all your help.

Hey Guys

I have as GS250 FWD in a go kart. I have finally got the valuve clearances set,
thanks Carl now it revs. But it is a total pain in the but to start.

One of the air jet screws on the carbie is jammed and there is no way I'll get
it out. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so what do you suggest I
do.

When I try to start it it can take me 20 mins or until a flat battery to finally
get it to rev and run without the starter moter. Up untill it actully revs the
clyinder with the jamed carbie air screw has not even tried to go, the exhaust
remains stone cold all the others begin to warm up. When It finnaly gets going
all clyinders run fine. and above 4000 rpm appears to rev smooth.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Mal

Hey found a GS 250 garaged for the last 13 years.
Owner says it was good when it went in but it won't start now!

Any advise? Asking $300

Missing left side muffler???

last registered in 1992 but appears immaculate.

Jeremy,

I guess it must be a break in one of the wires running to the handlebars or
a bad connection at the ignition or kill switch.

It may help to isolate the problem to a smaller area by getting the engine
started then moving or pulling cables until the engine stops.

I would start by checking the cables for anywhere where the insulation might
have worn through. Next I would pull apart the right-hand handlebar switch
and look for broken or nearly-broken connections. Lastly I would get the
bike into a state where it won't start then using the wiring diagram and a
continuity tester or multimeter, check each of the wires that has something
to do with the ignition and kill switches.

Good luck.

Hi,

This is embrassing.... but i have got another problem with my gf250.

This morning when i went out to the city for a haircut, everytime when
i attempt to a left turn and i make a full lock to the left, the
engine is killed off. i ignored the problem and had my haircut and
think i would be better to sort out the problem back home. when i
reach home, i went to take a bath, and afterwards decided to go
school. i find that i cannot start the bike. there's no electricity
when the ignator key is put at "on" position. however, if i turn the
handlebar to a full lock position to the left, there will be
elctricity, and i can start the bike with no problem. the problem is
that when i return the handlebar to it's normal straight postion, the
engine is killed off.

any idea what's the problem? i've checked the cables. but not to sure
what to do.

regards
jeremy

i have being reading the manual about changing the oil filter. but i'm
little confused with the mention of oil pressure valve and stuff.
what's the big deal about the presure valve and all the mention of oil
pressure in the manual? can anyone give me a simple protocol on oil
filter change and what to look out for. thanks heaps!!!

by the way, what is the routine maintenance you guys do for your bike?

Thanks for the advise, handy to know!

SV650 that's exactly what i was thinking of.... For cutting in half!
No seriously as a reverse Trike!

I take it you own one what are they like?

Good tip, swiss watches, I'll take note of that.!

4th gear in town, 6th on the highway but 3rd to eccellerate.
By gosh I think I got it.

6-8000 rpm putting ?

My car redlines at 6krpm !

So if I tried to ride my bike at 3krpm it would just stall?

This must be why they aren't so good on fuel?

What rpm is considered flogging?

What is the life expectancy of such a bike km?

Once again thankyou.

I should imagine that I will have to rejet as the exhaust will not be
standard anyway. Also I can only fit 2 filters not 4, and the K&N pod
filter was the one i was refering to. So it looks like I may have
been on the right path.?

So for safety reasons 5,000rpm is recomended!
I will be a "L" plater meaning top speed of 80km/h @ 4,000rpm
will the bike do this or is 6th gear for freeway use only?
At what point does the motor labour, rpm?

I read that turbo motors need to be fuel injected otherwise by by
valves! So the cost outweighs the benefit for a 250 I would imagine.

Also what tyre pressures are recomended and what preload?

What's the deal with cv carbs, what benefits do they have and what
disadvantages do thay have?? K&N said that more advantages can be
found with standard carburettors than the cv type?

Hi, not sure on you revs but my 250gf red lines at 13,000..and is good for
putting about at around 6 to 8 thousand revs. It has a dead spot between 8 and
8,700 but after that hang on. They are set up to giv best performance at around
10./11. thou. I just give my bike a mid life paint job and i used a high temp
black paint ( in a spray can ) that i got from bunnings, its desined for
manifolds and headers.
Good luck with you bike they are a lot of fun...

My bike reads 11,500rpm redline, but I read somewhere that they are
10% out which makes it 10,350rpm redline.

I am not a speed demon and for that matter am partially afraid of
riding the bike in the first place!

So they run best at 5000rpm but will they put around town at lower
rpm's, if so what is the lowest rpm at what speed, will they do
60km/h in top gear? I weigh only 50-60kg

I also found on another site that someone ran a dyno test and found
less than a 5% change by fiting a high flow exhaust system, in NM
that is. So I won't worry about any fancy exhaust setups.

Does anyone know why they use a oil bathed air filter?

Apart from being incredibly restrictive I can only denote that its
for catching fine dust particles. Is this a big problem anyway?

My old mower had a similar setup but it's stiring up large amounts of
   dust all of the time.

I will have the exhaust repaired and converted into 4/1 and run a
single 2" chromed Turbo muffler with silencer @$99 it's cheaper than
a bike muffler and will offer a softer note!

I also need the rear stop lamp!

Does anybody know what will fit or what I can use for rego purposes?

Hi There,

You'll find that the bike has more usable power (for a 250) above 5krpm,
I'd be keeping it above that - just in case you need to accelerate away
from someone, and to keep from lugging the motor.

Turbo GS250FW! If you've got the cash, then go for it :P

As for the air-filter, the one in mine has a foam filter around a
plastic cage, and it's supposed to be soaked in oil and squeezed clean.
This is so that fine dust can stick to the oil, and more dust sticks to
that dust - eventually it will restrict flow (as all air filters do),
but you can't clean a paper filter..

If you're feeling adventurous, you could try fitting four small filters
(to each carb intake), or one big (onto the front half of the air box)
filter - but I bet that this will stuff the fueling, and you'll have to
get it tuned/jetted on a dyno/a.f. meeter, or stuff around with needle
positions:

http://www.showandgo.com.au/per/K&N.htm?K&N_bf.htm~mainFrame

The air filters are VERY important for keeping your motor running good.
Just imagine what one sand grain is going to do to the inside of your
motor!

As john said, the exhaust is not the limiting factor with this bike, I'm
pretty sure (correct me if I'm wrong) that it's the 250cc part :P

You'll have to call around wreckers for a tail light, if you want it to
match. You'll also probably get away with an after-market one (go to the
local bike shop) from a dirt bike or something - no idea about the
legalities :)

Cheers,

Carl
