After a long time I have now fixed my wiring got a new CDI, got
spark, put new head and base gasket onto my GS250FWD with a lot help
from you guys. Thank you
Now I have reached the part where I want the thing to run. I have it
in a go kart. Spark is strong. Exhaust is complete but no air box.
It will only start and run on full choke. it takes ages to accelerate
and will only get to a max rev of aprox 5000 RPM it is a rough and
after it has been running I feel the exhausts and it is hot in
cylinder 1 and only warm in the others. It seams to run very rich and
whilst trying to start can backfire out the carbies.
I have the Carbie set up as:
There are four hoses on the carbies 1 is fuel inlet. and other 2 are
return that I have running to the ground (nothing comes out) and the
other I don't know I have tried it un-blocked and blocked.
Another question is how do you check the float levels. I am used to a
window and level mark.
If anyone can help It will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Malcolm
Well, I'm being lazy and using my partner's yahoo account (but the
email will reach me). Just to let affionados know first that my 1987
GF250 is up for sale - due to my deciding to splurge on an SV650S!
$1700 (slightly negotiable to a good home). Located in Northern NSW.
68000kms on the clock and still running strong (Mr. Suzuki knows his
engineering!). Some pics of the bike as featured on this site can be
found at: http://au.geocities.com/jimr_52/SuzukiGF250data.htm
If you're into collecting, it's original except for the tasty (but
non-Suzuki) paintwork. Frame is showing the rust-stain breakthrough
on
the paintwork that's so common with bikes of this era, and our house
moggy put some minor nicks in the seat surface.
Excellent condition for this model. Gearsack rack will be thrown in
(if you want to spoil the appearance and do some practical touring)
Rego XIK27 (expires end of this month but will easily renew)
Better be quick tho' as I'm putting it on the open market in a couple
of days

Hi Graham, thanks for the info I really appreciate it!! and I'll check over all
the things you've mentioned

Check for carb flooding, this could be due to
1. Corroded needles and or jets.
2. The float level may have changed due the bowl
sitting empty and drying out.
Other possible carb problems could be
1. Water in fuel system
2. Blocked idle jets (sediment settlement or just blocked)
3. Blocked fuel lines (fuel cock?)
Drain the fuel and put in a fresh batch, in NZ after three months the
fuel is useless due to the additives and blends breaking down.
Confirm that you have a good spark, if not identify the source of the

Hi, am having a bit of a problem. Because my bike (GS250FW) had been
sitting for around 4-5 months I decided to get it serviced. The
serviceing has now been done, new plugs, leads, oil, battery, etc but
can't get her to fire. There is no problem with the bike turning over it
just won't start, and I've also tried jump starting in second and third
gear but to no avail. Please if someone out there could give me any tips
on this I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks for your time.

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had a decent picture of a GS250FW. I've
looked through the yahoo albums, but they're all pretty low quality.
Thanks!
Carl
Hi Malcolm,
Have you downloaded the service manual from the yahoo site? Section
4.23 and 4.24 go into re-timing the engine and putting the cams back
in. There's a few diagrams of how it's supposed to be timed, as well as
quite a thorough procedure to follow.
I'd forget about the scratch marks you've made on the cams and chain and
follow this procedure to get it back in line.
If you'd like a copy of the pages, let me know.
Cheers,
Carl

Hi Guys,
Two posts in one day! I'm after a set of piston rings for a GS250FW -
I've tried suzuki, and they say that they can get them - at a cost
which is a bit steep for me. I was wondering if anyone around here
had a set, or knew of anyone who has them, any one who imports stuff
like this, basically any information at all?
I've tried suziparts, parts finder, calling ring manufacturers etc.
It seems that noone has any in stock, for a reasonable price..
Any help would be most appreciated.
Cheers,
Carl
Hi Grant,
What year's your Katana? You might find that it's similar to the
GSX250F (Across), which I think was around since '91. The GS250FW and
GF250 have early variations on this engine - from what I understand.
Cheers,
Carl

There is a GS250FW on eBay that somebody might be interested in for
parts or for repair. Presently $300.

Hi Gary, I have the same problem with my bike. A friend has put me onto a
ex-mechanic who for 14 years worked for porche and ferrari and he fix's
cars/bikes for pure enjoyment, for a small fee of course. Hoping to take my bike
to him in about a week so once he finds the prob I can email you if you like.

Hi Garry,
I see your concern...the carbs do seem to be a nightmare at times..I've had
problems myself were as it would start perfect then i would try ride and would
not get up and go till after about 5500 rpm...so my discovery which I'm sure is
going to be yours...check the choke needles and see if there is carbon build-up
around them if so use 1200 grit waterproof sand paper and clean them till they
are like goldish looking.. also so that you know make sure that the Diaphragms
rubbers have no cracks...you never mentioned how you know the carbie is OK you
sure the floats height is correct ( example 20mm +/- 1mm) and make sure that the
Pilot jet ( 30 marked ) is not slightly blocked and the Pilot air jet is clean
too ( marked 160) on the jet the two main one's either side of the float..Note:
it wouldn't harm to actually clean the Plunger Pistons connected to Diaphragms
with 1200 grit sand paper.. also you mentioned idling idling screw is
between the carbs adjust so its about 1250 -1300
rpm ...hope this is some help
Safe riding
Brendon.

Howdy, I have just recently picked up a GS250FW that runs, but not
all that well, it only starts with full choke and keeps dying, It
turns out that one of the cylanders only has 24 psi and a second, has
next to nothing,
We are hoping that its just the valves out of place as we thought it
was the carbie but when we took it into get reconed, the guy told us
that its commonly the valves going out of place and not sealing
properly causing the bike not to run properly, And I was just wanting
to know if anyone had any idea on how to adjust these?
Hi John, thanks for that mate, the picture is OK but I
wonder if the 1987 spec was different, mine is the
GF250S model. Like I said, I have a spark, good
compresion, fuel in the carbs, timing is bang on but
it just wont fire up!!!!! This is the only thing I can
think of what is wrong as when I got the bike it was
missing both coils. Any thing I may have missed or a
procedure I should follow would be great. The picture
may help if its a bit more clear, cheers, Craig.

I have just bought a well used GS250FW. The wiring has been fiddled
and so the start button does not work - any suggestions would help. I
am also looking for some parts, Airbox and inlet tubes.
Hope someone can help
Hi Malcom, you do need the battery connected as it
needs power from this to the CDI or(signal generator)
in order to power the CDI up which send the coils into
action which then should give you the spark your
after. If you take a look ar the wiring diagram you
will see the orange & white wire which is the positive
or live wire, it goes from the ignitor up to both the
coils, then splits off to the engine stop swithes,
then goes to the lighting block where it eventually
gets power from the battery but it requires this
positive feed in order to run. Sounds complicated but
realy quite simple. It maybe an idea (not too sure if
it will work) but link your kill switches together and
see if you have a spark, as it maybe the switches that
are not connecting good. I had a similar problem here
on my project and it was all the switches has corroded
up after been stood for a year. Best regards, Craig.

Hi Malcom, will take a look at mine for ya mate and

power feed to the ignition side but like I say, ill
check for ya, cheers, Craig.

Thanks Craig for your last reply.
Still no spark.
I have carefully followed the wiring diagram and
removed all
unwanted wires from my loom. I now have the plug from
the
engine (I assume is the signal generator) into the
igniter and the
other plug from the igniter to the coils. I do not
have any + cables
connected to the Battery except the starter motor
cable when I
turn over.
Q: When I turn over the engine buy connecting the
starter cable to
the +, Should the signal generator send out power
created by the
engine to the igniter. Or do I need a separate power
source to
the igniteror engine.
Note: I do not have a regulator rectifier connected.
The 3 yellow
cables from the engine (alternator I'm guessing) are
not
connected to a rectifier.
I hope I have made sense.
Thanks in advance
Malcolm
