Excellent :)

Those air boxes are a PITA.. I found that I could pull the carbs out
before the air box with quite a bit of force, but it is hard :) Someone
else might have some tips for this.. ?

While you're doing the carbs, make sure you check the rubber diaphram's
for the slides carefully for any holes or tears - you can use a torch
behind them and look through them for any light.. You might also find
this site worth the look:

http://au.geocities.com/ozcross250/

Specifically:

http://au.geocities.com/ozcross250/holder.html and;
http://au.geocities.com/ozcross250/needles.html

As for paint, you could go to any hardware store (Bunnings) and you
should be able to get some high-heat paint that's used on engine's.. I
think they call it engine paint, comes in a spray pack and in quite a
few colours.. Ask the sales person about any prep-work you might have
to do before spraying (undercoat/sanding/prepsol etc).

As for the muffler, I think there'd be a few options there. You could:
a) Go get some stock mufflers that aren't rusted (good luck!)
b) Get some mufflers from a similar Suzuki (they might fit!) from a
    wreckers
c) Get the exhaust modified to a 4-into-1, and grab an after-market can
from the wreckers/new or one from another 250..
c2) You MIGHT find that the Across headers fit, they're already a
4-into-1, and you could just get a pipe/can custom fit on the end.

If you're still looking for an Across manual, try here:

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/SuzukiAcross/files/

Let us know how you go! :)

Cheers,

Carl

Thanks, The carb cleaner worked so well it stripped the paint clean
of the carbs!!!

It took me almost 2 HRS to get the air filter box out???
Not sure how you are supposed to get those darn things out!

All blockages have been cleaned out except for one seized piston in
the carb, so I'll have to pull the darn thing apart! Luckily you guys
were here to give me the PDF on how the carbs pull apart!

Does anyone know the paint they use on the carbs/engine/headers???

I am pretty sure that anything i try will just burn from the heat...
Any suggestions???

Any suggestions on cheap mufflers... preferably the quite kind???

Thanks Heaps,

  ROB

The Across has (what I believe to be) a later version of what's in the
GS250FW, the manual won't help you with specifics (valve clearances
etc), but it will help with engine and carbs. It's better illustrated
and quite useful when used with the GS250FW manual. I've also browsed
the Across forums in search of some troubleshooting advice, which
carries over quite well.

Carb cleaner you'll get from any auto parts store (SuperCheap, Autobahn,
Burson's etc) and usually runs at about $8 for a spray can.

Assuming that you'll be doing this yourself, I'd recommend you download
the workshop manual from this site - then go and look for a GSX250F
(Across) manual as the carbs are very similar (and the diagrams in this
manual are a lot better).

Pulling them out of the bike is more difficult than cleaning them - it's
a rather tight squeeze in there.

Once you've got them out, just pull them down (one at a time) and
methodically store all the pieces in separate trays, cleaning them as
you go - just make a mental note (or a digital camera comes in handy) of
where everything goes, and how it goes together.

There are three adjustments on these carbs - Syncing the throttle
between them, needle positions, and air jet positions. You shouldn't
need to touch the carb sync screw (though I recommend syncing them
afterward) or mess with the needle positions. As for the air jets, just
count the number of turns it takes to screw each of them in (softly!),
and set them back to that when you're done.

The rest of the cleaning is just a matter of either soaking the parts in
carb-cleaner, or spraying the passages with carb-cleaner. Everything
should be blown dry with compressed air..

Either that, or you could just take them to a shop to do :)

Did you end up getting exhaust pipes for your bike?

Got it for $300.
Needs carbs rebuilt due to fuel blokage.

The bike is near new, black in colour and only 20,000km.
Garaged since 1993.

Another $500 and i'll have it registered.
On the road for meisly $800!
And I'll be able to sell it for $1500 easy- quoted $1999

Does anyone know a good way to clean out a fuel blockage?

Maybe it could be clutch lever adjustment; incorrect oil type; worn clutch
or pressure plate...

Thanks John,

manage to have smooth tranmission from gear to gear now and the bike
doesn't stall when it stop or idle. I reckon i did not manage to
fully clean out the flood i the engine but as i do some travelling
with it the situation improved. However, there is still a minor
problem, i notice when i hit the trottle hard, the bike will pick up
speed and revs as normal, but till it reach 7000rpm. at 7000 rpm,
the bike just rev immediately to 10,000 rpm but doesn't increase
much speed. this is never seen before the fall. Any idea what's
wrong? could it be engine oil problem, i do think i have
accidentally added a bit more than i wanted to engine oil when i try
to top up the engine oil after it has lost a considerably amount
during the fall.

Cheers
jeremy

Jeremy,

Seems unlikely you would damage anything else in such a fall. Unless the
cable broke inside - is there resistance when you pull the lever? Can you
see any movement at the clutch end of the cable?

Are you sure you got the right clutch lever? If the part where the cable
clips into is not in the same place as the old one it may not have enough
leverage to disengage the clutch. Lay whats left of the old one on top of
the new one and make sure they are the same.

That's about all i can think of.

Good luck

hi,

This is jeremy. I have a GF 250 bike. i usually dunn park my bike
out in the
lawn as my mates have taken up the car space in the garage. recently
there has
been heavy rainfall. it didn't occur to me the ground has been
soften by all
the rainfall. my bike fell last night on it's side while i parked it
overnight
out at the usual place on the lawn. the clutch lever broke and it
was not able
to start. i manage to replace the clutch lever and cleaned out a bit
of engine
flooding on the side of the engine/spark plug on the side of the
bike where it
was lying on. as such i manage to get it to start.

The next problem is what i hadn't rectify. although i fixed the
cutch lever
back on, i was able to angage clutch. i notice the wheel is spining
in 1st
gear even when fully clutch-in position. i tried the clutch
adjustment thingy
(the one near the clutch lever which is similar to those brake
adjustment on
bicycle), and even turning it to the maximum does not disengage the
tranmission. i'm pluzzled. did i break something with the fall? is
there
anything esle i can check on abt the clutch?

The GS250FW is rare here in Australia but unfortunately not valuable. Most I
see for sale (rarely) are in pretty bad condition and go for less than
$1000, perhaps up to $1500 if in good condition with registration.

Hey thanks CARL but I live in Tamworth NSW.
BIKE is at service shop being inspected and quoted.
I have not bought it yet as it is not yet running.
I don't wont problems.
So far the bike needs Both mufflers replacing, the pipes are not
rusted so that is good, A new rear tyre, as it is original "82" and
the rubber is hard. No rust on the bike to be found anywhere. Don't
know if electricals work yet as battery flat so i'll aslo need a new
battery. Only body damage was done while it was in the garden shed,
which was a cracked indicator lense. I understand these are rare but
have no idea of their road going value??? As I need to know how much
is worth spending on this bike?

The bike is original and baring the muffler complete!

I think i wrote the wrong identification!
its an 82 GS250FW-S.

It looks exactly like the one shown at the start of this forum but
missing one muffler??? Not sure why muffler missing will have to ask
owner?

Any more advise would be appreciated!

Hi James (?),

It sounds like a bargain, but that all depends. You should be aware
that these bikes are very rare, getting parts for them is reasonably
difficult as there aren't many about in the wreckers, and Suzuki has
discontinued some parts. That's not to say that getting parts for them
is impossible, quite a few parts from other models (bar engine
components) will fit, but it's a lot harder than, say, a CBR250RR or
something more common.

I'd be checking to see if the bike is complete/original or needs work,
if it has compression/spark and if it will start (which you say it
won't). If it doesn't start, then it could simply be gummed-up carb's,
or more seriously - it may need a rebuild.

Does the tank have rust, are the wheel bearings ok, does the seat need
re-covering, do the electrics work? Why was it stored in the first
place?

The missing exhaust could be a problem - though the remaining pipe is
probably rusted out anyway and may need replacing, you'd be looking at a
few $$ for replacement pipes (and fitting) :)

If you're in Melbourne I could take a quick look (for a liquid reward),
though I'm not going to guarantee that I'm an expert or that I even know
what I'm talking about.. :P

Do you have any pictures?

Cheers,

Carl

Hi Mark,

Sounds like you've got yourself a bargain. They have a lot of features for
that money: the high-tech 10-piston brake setup, good fuel range, and all
those gauges for fuel, temperature and gear position. Mine proved to be very
reliable for the few years I owned it (since been sold). The only advice I
would give is don't let it run out of fuel or forget to turn the fuel on as
mine was very hard to restart after that.

The only drawback may be parts availability. As there were probably less
than 200 imported into Australia, Suzuki dealers are less likely to carry
parts in stock, and there are few at bike wreckers to take parts off. You
wont have problems with things like oil filters though. But if you do need
an unusual part, your Suzuki dealer should be able to look it up on the
microfiche and order it, just might take a month to come from Japan.

Hi,
to everyone. Have just bought one of these and seems good.
Its not pristine of course but for a$500 what can you get?
It seems a little screamer and only needed new rear tyre.
How do these bikes rate?
I have had that much junk before that it seems a revelation.
Mostly British iron.
Starts first time on the button, stops on a dime and handles well.
I cant get used to not looking down at the lights to check that bits
havent fallen off.
I am in for a big shock when something does break?
thanks

Do you mean the whole system, headers to end of muffler, or just the muffler
can? If you mean the headers I think you'll have trouble...tho' MAYBE Across
models might be close, since its basically the same motor (go check your local
bike wrecker or ask at Suzuki dealer?.)If its just the muffler I'd imagine
there'd be lots of aftermarkets that'd suit (anything that's for a 250 four or
twin?), though if they're TOO freeflowing you might need to re-jet. Again I'd be
looking for something that suits the Across.
Good luck

Just wanted to wish you guys well and say goodbye, as I've parted with my sweet
little GF250, in order to fund my new(ish) SV650S (all of which I'll post on my
website if I can ever remember the damn password..lol).
Sold it to Graham from Yamba...gave him a copy of the manulas on CD, and told
him about this support group so you may find the bike popping up again! 68000+
km's and still running sweetly and looking stylish. What a gem of a machine: it
really opened my eyes to little in-line fours and modern Japanese handling.
All the best, and a special thanks to John for the great support.
regards,
Jim

Can you remember any of the details about the fork seals? Mine need
rebuilding, and as the UK never officially received the bike, no-one
knows much about it. The manual (so far) has nothing about the front
forks apart from the recommended oil…think they are 35.5 internal,
46external, need to know the depth (ie 11mm, 12.5,13….)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your replies, I've already downloaded the manual which was a
great help in re-building the whole bike from the frame up - what a
project that was!

The problem is, that the manual doesn't show enough detail of the forks,
and I believe that the forks I have are different to the forks in the
manual. The one that's illustrated has a screw-in top cap, where as
mine has a push-in seal with cir-clip. It also only shows the left fork
(where I'm having issues with the right fork).

I've seen the forks I have on the microfiche at a local bike shop
(apparently there's a few models, with different fork assemblies). Just
wondering if anyone had a copy of it that they could either lend (to get
scanned) or sell?

Perhaps I should be asking you all about the forks instead of the
microfiche?

Thanks in advance,

Carl

Carl

Okay, got the manual. If anybody has the microfiche, put me in for a
copy. Need to replace the seals on the fronts forks of my gf250. can't
find any details in the manual, so its gonna be off the road for a week
while I strip it down and get the parts. Shame, cos as a first bike -
the little machine is hilarious!!!

The repair manual can be downloaded from the Yahoo! Groups page in the
file
section. There is a link from www.geocities.com/john_avis/suzuki -- it's
not
the same as the parts microfiche but does have an exploded diagram of
the
front forks.

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone out there had a copy (or knew where I could
obtain one) of the Microfiche for a GS250FW. I'm specifically after
the part that shows the fork assembly, but would love to see the whole
thing..

I'm also after a radiator fan, if anyone has one laying around and
would be willing to sell it - please let me know! :)

Thanks in advance,

Carl

Hi Anthony,
I had a reply from you a long time ago about my GS250 not wanting to idle.
You said you had the same problem. Did you ever get an answer?
I finally got back to mine the other day - here's the deal....

It will not start cold except for using aerostart !!!!!
It then starts immediately and will run under FULL choke until warmed up
Gradually backing off choke and watching revs, it will finally run at about
2000-3000 - no choke.
It is rideable under these conditions and seems to restart while warm
without too much trouble.
Once started it runs well - plenty of power [slightly dead 7000-9000], seems
to be gtood except for the 2000-3000 lower limit [which soetimes becomes
4000].

I have checked float levels, slides, jets, all seem to be OK [then I'm not a
mechanic]. I even checked the diaphram on the fuel valve, thinking there may
be an airleak, not so.
The airbox had no filter or filter retaining items in it, I have not been
able to get an original so I manufactured a filter with aluminium strips and
airleaner foam [hoping this would be sufficient] - maybe this is my problem,
I have been told they are a bit fussy here [but I had a 250 Kwaka that
didn't care if it had an airbox or not].

At one stage I was going to replace the carbs and be done with it, but I
have not been able to come up with a pair that are in suitable condition.

So Anthony, or anyone else for that matter, I would be glad of any help you
can give.
As I said, once it is running - it goes very well, remembering the low rev
limit of 2000-3000.

But Anthony, I am particularly interested in what you found with yours.

Regards...
Garry Moylan

David,

These are rare bikes here in Australia and probably not worth much even in
great condition (probably less than $2000). For more details on the history
of these bikes see my web site, www.geocities.com/john_avis/suzuki

Hello,

I have just bought a GS250FW and know nothing about it. Could you
please assist me in finding out a sort of value to the bike. What
did you sell yours for and what sort of prices do they go for? I
need to know if it is worth spending money on it to bring it back to
show room condition or if I will just use it as a run around.

I would apprieciate any help that I can get as this bike is so alien
to me.

Thanks for your time

David
