Hi there,

I also see that the dates are now the 2nd till the 5th not the 7th
as previously mentioned. Is this accurate?

Thanks,

Lockie

Thanks for posting the NOR and SI's.

I have noted in the NOR entries close on the 18th of December. As
the NOR was only posted on the 20th of December are we still
required to pay the additional $90 late fee?????

Is it possible to have them posted into the "Files" section of the

We are looking for a main, jib and kite - if anyone has some good

Hi Ray you have every right to whing about some of the processes, they
dont make a lot od sense sometimes.

Re Carbon Masts, the Int Class has ask the builders to do a number of
things, One is look at Carbon masts. Why, possibly fashion statement,
Image, but certainly weight will drop 4-5 kgs and at the top end its
very important.

Will it happen, very likely, probably be voted in by your and your
representation at the world in Cascis (June 07) or in Sorrento (Jan 08),
it was widely discussed at the worlds in Aix Les Bains (July 06) and we
are working on it. They will be more expensive but there is a belief
that they will last longer and be more stable. Thats the idea.

To be up on this you need to talk to those who went and also read the
international site, as its a international initiative. I accept the Int
site is not that flash at the moment but not much we can do about that.

The 2008 Worlds will now be in Sorrento, in the south east end of Port
Phillip Bay about 2 hrs SE of Melbourne. Jan 2-9th 2008

SIRs will be Late Dec, Nationals will either be Sydney or Belmont
26-30th Dec.

Hi Guys,
I'm happy to pay my membership, so that I can sail in the Nationals
coming up, but I had a question.

Is there a structure whereby information can be distributed to 49er
sailors?

Examples:
1) I was surprised to read in the latest Australian Sailing mag, that
49ers will be going to Carbon Fibre masts (Interview with Julian). Now
I have no problem with doing this, BUT, surely there could have been a
heads up to sailors that such a move was being considered. If nothing
else, it would provide a way of getting active 49er sailors talking to
each other. It certainly will have implications for any plans to buy a
new mast.

2) I've been told that months ago Sydney Harbour was ditched as the
venue for the 2008 Worlds.
This is information that your average Australian 49er sailor would
find relevant. Brent has just posted a reply to a question about the
location of the 2008 worlds, which now turns out to be wrong.
Nobody has yet posted anything to say what is happening, although
there has just appeared an article on the international 49er web site
about it.

Who can we talk to to get some idea of what's going on in the class?

I'm not whinging, because I know that there are a lot of people doing
a lot of good work behind the scenes, and I am grateful for that. But
sometimes that hard work can be undone because of a lack of communication.

Any ideas?

Anthony,

Re: cutting + swaging wires to migrate to turnbuckle adjustment, then this is the best data I can offer anyone:

CAPS - BP-BP 7760mm
PRIMARY - BP-BP 5410mm

BP = bearing point. Or where a small pin/nail would bear if used to pull on the eye swage.

This should put your caps about 3 or 4 full holes below your swage, and plenty of adjustment all round. It's essential to have the caps pin below the shrouds ping or else you cannot do 4mm capstay adjustment. Plus you have to ensure you don't run out of caps adjustment range.

Clynton has I think been using C=7785 and P=5409 based on measurements I gave to him in Nov 2005. I carefully made my caps 25mm shorter and things are now ideal I reckon. Thus the revised numbers. But beware, I've not run a measure tape down my wires to confirm this is what I am using. I must do that.

If you get enough data, you could average things out. But be sure to only seek lengths where the caps pin is 3 or 4 full holes below the shroud pin and turnbuckle threads are in the middle of their range. Other data is of no use.

The attached photo may be of interest to many of you.

Recall that on Sunday (de-brief) we talked about gybe sets (again).

In this photo (from Moscow 2006 worlds I think but where does not
really matter), you can see that the rate of turn/gybe is ideally
not delayed for the sake of the spin hoist. You can also see on the
boat coming second (white spin just hoisted) that the effects of
heel+turn will keep the spin from falling over the port side. That
same boat is still on the plane, so you can percieve the boat speed,
wind speed, the timing and the aggression. Careful controlled
aggression often makes a task easier.

If we conservatively estimate leading 49er averages 10kts hull speed
(1 boat length per second) from the bear way to the set of the red
spinnaker. Then the red spinnaker was up with crew on trap in about
5 seconds.

Equipment also comes into play. A slippery spinnaker does not foul
so easily. A stiff hull stays on the plane for longer which keeps
the apparent wind coming from ahead and/or light for longer during
the hoist, and of course the halyard must be running freely in all
places.
