Hi all,
I've been looking at the fact that there aren't any other regatta's left in the season after the Bethwaite Regatta at WSC in a few weeks,  so am thinking about organising a two day regatta in Jervis Bay.
I will only go ahead with this if there is an interest (really need 8-10 boats).

Please let me know what you think,  cuz if the interest is there I will go ahead and plan the weekend.

info on sailing location:-

you can check out accomidation here -

I will decide by the end of the week, so please let me know if you are interested before then.

Regards,
- Mike.

Agree with all you said, if we can achieve this at another venue that is achievable for most ( lets not forget about cost & time for majority  otherwise we could be down to a few boats again ) lets look at it

Hi Jon,
I'd agree that this was the best venue for 49er sailing that I have
experienced (the warm water had a LOT to do with that).
However, rather than say that it should be at the same place every
year, I'd rather identify what made it so good, and then ask that any
future venue be able to match, or exceed this standard.

My requirements would start with:
- Flat water
- Warm Water
- Good wind (not too strong, nor too flukey)
- Little traffic (except other 49ers)
- Capable and experienced race management
- Good on shore facilities
- Good and safe launching
- A club which welcomes and understands dinghies
- Social Events to get to know other sailors.
- a range of accommodation options nearby
- On shore "touristy" things for the "pit crews" to do while we race

Good as the recent titles were, there were some of these areas where
other venues may do an even better job.

As a "Mexican", it's only 12 hours of continuous driving to get to
Lake Macquarrie, so it's quite convenient;-), and I would have no
objection to doing it each year.

BUT, I can see Kynan and Brent's point.

How about we alternate between Near State-Far State, each year? That
is, if a distant state wants to host a nationals, then they get first
preference every second year.
On alternate years, it is hosted by a near state
(In practice, near and far are relative to Sydney, Sorry Brent and Kynan)

In any case, the title will only be awarded to a state which makes a
proposal which meets all the requirements above.

If no-acceptable bids arrive, then it can fall back to Lake Macquarie,
or some other known successful venue.

If the title ends up at Lake Macquarie every second year, or more,
(which would be a likely outcome), that wouldn't be all bad. But this
gives Kynan and Brent a chance to host us if they wish.

In any case, using this sort of approach, wherever the titles are
held, the sailors will know that the venue is first class, and is
worth the time and money involved in travelling to get to.

For next year, I'm happy to go back to Lake Macquarie.

It was a definitely a fantastic regatta. I'm looking
forward to next year's event.

However, if growing the fleet is really the priority,
then NSW is not where efforts need to be focused.
There are already a number of great regattas with good
fleets held in and around Sydney.

Perth, Melbourne and even FNQ have emerging fleets
which could do with a bit of support from the bigger
fleet to lure sailors from other classes.

A major motivator for me to send my boat to this
nationals was to try to get WA back onto the rotation
as the next couple of years pose a real opportunity to
grow a fleet in Perth. There are currently 4 active
boats here and 2 of them are ex national champions. I
know it doesn't sound huge but one of our 29er teams
is moving to a 49er now, and there are another 3 49ers
around who could do with a bit of motivation to get
their boats wet. If it wasn't for Dave Mann coaching
the 29ers, he was planning to travel for this
Nationals too.
The next opportunity for a WA Nationals is 2009 (11
years since the last one). By this time, our 29er
fleet (6 travelled this year) will all hopefully be
into 49ers. This will boost our fleet to at least 10
boats and the possibility of a hometown Nationals will
generate plenty of interest to grow it even more.

Restricting the nationals to NSW is fine for the next
year as the existing fleet numbers are there and this
will provide the biggest overall improvement in the
skill level of the Australian fleet prior to the
worlds. However, after that, a rotation system should
be re-instated based on previous representation and
maybe even a minimum local fleet. This will provide
the biggest growth of the fleet.

In any case, there will be at least 2 boats travelling
east again for SIRS, Nationals and hopefully Worlds at
the end of the year. We improved and learnt a lot over
the course of this regatta and our lack of big fleet
experience really showed so I'm keen to get to as many
as possible before the worlds.

Incidentally, the WA states are on over the March long
weekend and the 3 of a kind regatta in April will also
attract at least 2 teams of 3 if anyone is interested
in a short hop over the island ;)

Cheers,

Kynan (AUS435)

Guys

just a quick reminder that the summer series started at WSC last
weekend with a perfect 15 knot north easter and some great racing.
Races 3 & 4 are on this weekend with racing starting at 1.30pm.

Please note the race commmitte and club are keen to get racing started
on time so we can get off the water at a reasonable time so everyone
can enjoy a beer and BBQ afterwards.

Cheers

Congratulations Emmett & Cameron,

Good results and staying upright appear to have been the tricks for this regatta. I'll congratulate Cameron, being an ex-Cairns sailor once beginning in the same club I began sailing. Although never having the oppurtunity to see him sail (other than on Nokia). I have although seen his father sail and I have been able to race against his Brother in 49er's, congratulations Joel McDonald, Camerons brother and owner of Tasman Sails, on the successful Design and making of the Mainsail used by CST Composites to win the 12ft'er Interdominions.

Well done guys!

I agree Kynan, this was our second 49er regatta, and we had a ball,
despite only completing one race. (Our aim was to finish one race
ahead of one boat, and we did that :-)
Appolgies to anyone we got in the way of.
You NSW guys are blessed to have flat, warm water with strong winds to
sail on up there.
We learned heaps, and met a number of other crews, which was great.
I'd like to catch up, next time, for at least one social outing after
the sailing, before we collapse into bed.

My only constructive criticism is to all competitors, if you had a
good time, tell everyone about it here. People who want to get into
the class want to hear that it's fun! So far only Kynan has said that
the regatta was actually run.
My only regret was that we had to leave a day early.

Thanks again to all who organized it. I hope that we can get around to
a few more such events before winter.

The Sydney crew of Emmett Lazich and Cameron McDonald (CST Composites) won the final Race 8 to take out the 12ft skiff Interdominion crown at the International Skiff Regatta hosted by the Royal Geelong Yacht Club today; however New Zealand retains the Teams trophy for the 10th year running.

A former multiple Moth world champion, Lazich, who is also a successful 49er sailor and coach, won the first three races of the series and backed up with a win today with McDonald to beat their nearest rivals throughout the regatta, the well-sailed Kiwi crew of Chris Reid and Alex Vallings (Nuplex Maersk). Vallings, the defending skipper from 2005-2006.

Reid, who is in his rookie season as skipper, won Races 4 and 7, with a second in Race 2 and finishing second to the CST Composite crew today. It was appropriate that the top two of the series finished their day in those positions.

Commenting on their second place, a philosophical Reid said: 'Now we’ll have to come back!' He went on to say: 'It’s been a fantastic event with good close racing.'

Behind Reid, came a further two New Zealand entries, that of Nathan Bax/Alex Hinton (Bax Contractors) and National champions Hamish Hey/Mike Candy (Nice Action). Because of their actions, the New Zealanders cart of the Teams prize. The Kiwis have always proved hard to beat and this time proved no different.

One of two only Queensland entries, Paul O’Malley-Jones//Richard Billett (Gob Smacked Dwarves) did an incredible job to come home fourth overall. There are few Queensland 12s racing right now, so the two deserve big accolades.

Lazich and McDonald led the final race from start to finish, with the Nuplex Maersk duo in second place all day; none of the other entries bothered either one of them around the triangle and two windward/leeward course, with racing getting underway at 2.00pm this afternoon.

A Sydneysider, Lazich has been heavily involved in research and development, trying to fine tune his 12 footer down to a two-rig job, which apparently paid off in this series. His and CST Composite’s work is ongoing.

Under overcast skies with rain falling for their entire race, the 30-boat fleet representing NSW, Queensland, Victoria and New Zealand experienced gusty and shifty conditions at the Sail Melbourne event raced on Corio Bay.

Winds kicked in to 12-18 knots, increasing to 20 plus on the reach. By the last leg of the course, breezes had died to 5-8 knots.

Next year’s Interdominion will be sailed in New Zealand.

Scott, I was at Sail Melbourne last year crewing. Although we didn't do so
greatly, we were there. After I had competed in the Nacra F18's in Adelaide I
flew over an jumped on a 49er right after landing to help make up the numbers.

As for the reasons for no NQ boats attending; Aaron Linton had Syd-Hob
Commitments, so getting his boat there was not going to be easy. Myself I don't
have a license until February 15- otherwise I would have taken both Aaron's
and my own boat down. 2nd boat from Cairns has had his boat for about a year
now. The 4th NQ boat is a loaned boat from a friendly person from Mackay.

Reason I ask is- only a 10-12hr drive away and the chance to race against guys
like- Nathan/Ben, Will/Jon and even yourself at the top level in an
International regatta. With the 25+??? boats at McCrae, that could also have
been Sandringham for the OICR... Understandable, people have work and business
commitments. But those who don't, slack effort.

All I know is if I lived in Sydney and could have piggy-backed my boat to
Melbourne I would have.

Nothin Malitious was intended, sorry if it came across that way!

The 4th NQ boat is a loaned boat from a friendly person from Mackay.

Reason I ask is- only a 10-12hr drive away and the chance to race against guys like- Nathan/Ben, Will/Jon and even yourself at the top level in an International regatta. With the 25+??? boats at McCrae, that could also have been Sandringham for the OICR... Understandable, people have work and business commitments. But those who don't, slack effort.

All I know is if I lived in Sydney and could have piggy-backed my boat to Melbourne I would have.

Nothin Malitious was intended, sorry if it came across that way!

Are you on drugs?

5 of the 12 boats last year were from Sydney. More boats than from
anywhere else. No Sydney boats are going this year mainly because of
the flow-on effect of the AST going to Miami.

Why no NQ boats ever go to the Nationals?

That was a great regatta despite our lacklustre
performance!. It was great to see the top guys get
amongst it in a bit of breeze and to meet some new
crews.

Does anyone have video footage from the regatta?

Hi there,

I also see that the dates are now the 2nd till the 5th not the 7th
as previously mentioned. Is this accurate?

Thanks,

Lockie

Thanks for posting the NOR and SI's.

I have noted in the NOR entries close on the 18th of December. As
the NOR was only posted on the 20th of December are we still
required to pay the additional $90 late fee?????
