Sirs at Belmont sounds good....

as for the times, if we come down at all this winter etc... It wouldn't bother us, but i suppose it depends who your 'regulars' are.

Team,

It seems the club wants to make sat racing this winter to start at 1.30pm to accommodate school kids.

I will try to arrange for the 49ers to race earlier than that (due to the more likelyhood of wind) if I can get some interest. So far, Emma would prefer the mornings as do I but I have had no feedback from anyone else (except Dave).

Please let me know.

I went for a sail this morning and was reminded as always why I love sailing 49ers in sydney. Just make it happen and get out there this winter!

SIRS (2009-10)

There are parties who would like to move the 49ers to Belmont for sirs next season.

I like the idea. The sailing is better all round and:

There are many good young skiff sailors who live up there and for those who struggle to find competent crews, I suggest the hosting club encourages its young sailors to put their names on a list to make themselves available  to crew with visiting skippers.

I will certainly do the regatta if I can get a good crew and I think others would to.

Thoughts?

Guys abd gals,

I have proposed a start time of 10.30am for our sat winter season at WSC.

It looks like most are happy with that. If its a westerly day, we will get more wind in the morn than latter on. If its a southerly it prob does not matter but southerly winds are often stormy and many wont sail anyway.

First race is 9th May.

I hope folks make the effort to race the winter, at least on the fine days. Sydney is beautiful in winter and there is little traffic on the hbr.

I am planning to map out the next summer series next week. This will involve channeling some of our storage costs (for boats) back to those who actually sail the club championship. I am proposing splitting the pool of funds between those who get results (regardless of their result). There will be some funds available for those who do not store boats at the club (but are members) but it will be a small part of the pool.

I will also try to get us a sponsor for our club championship series.

If you would like to voice your opinion, do it now.

Hi Stuart,

I am selling my 49er AUS676 for $10,000 (Woollahra Sydney). This was
only raced in key regattas as we had a seperate training boat so it is
in very good nick. Comes with two sets of sails. Definitely worth a

I have been asked to put together a basic race schedule for the winter.
Any feedback ideas at this stage are welcome.

Jeremy did suggest we race on saturdays. Any views?

Nigel

PS can someone provide me with instructions for signing up to this forum so I can forward to those not using it...I know I am not very IT savy.

Paul, I know some people are going to scream at me for saying this but
it costs you $750 to keep a Tasar in the rack at Northbridge.
$900 to keep a 49er fully rigging is not a big ask.

There is approx a 7 month waiting list at Northbridge, and there is not
much space here.

And the board can allow XYZ to pay half and forgo there S & F monies
year one if they know they will sail X number of races. This is
exactly how the 16teen clubs do it, or they actually give the people a
10k grant to go get a boat, and they then pay it down. Either way
works, just need to change the culture.

Need to get the boats in the club, active. And I need to get the SKUD
out of here!

All good ideas and great to see folks talking about it.

One issue is that it adds another level of administration trying to keep up with what boat has done what races etc. I would hope that under the new management structure, that this will be resolved because of far better race results management.

As David points out, there is the possibility of a drop in revenue due to departures from the club because of the hike in storage fee's. The system would have to be very carefully considered, as boat storage is a very large part of our revenue base.

In essence I like the idea though.

I agree on a handicap system of some sort. The two top mark system appeals to me. It gives you an opportunity to get back amongst the leaders and work hard on say the final leg to keep them behind you.

Just so you understand, as I was one of the people who put this up.

Say there are 40 - 50 official sailing days a year, summer and winter
and Thursday nights.

Then you charge say $2000 to park your boat here (approx double the std
rate)

What you would do then is offer start and finish money of say $50 per
race (that's 25 to start and 25 to finish)

Then if you did 12 summer races, 5 winter races and 6 Thursdays night
races and you finished all but 3 of the races,
then you will get (37 starts + 34 finishes ) x $25 = $ 887.50

Now I think that you need to lift the figure from 25 to say 40
(40+40=80 per race) so it a incentive to go sailing. People who do not
store there boats in the club get a lesser figure, say $10 + $10 and
that's also fair because its the people who are storing here that are
supporting this system.

The reason for the start and finish money rather than per race is that
is how the 16teens have found it important, that someone has to have a
go at getting around. But it could be 60+20 instead of 40+40.

That's for someone else with a spreadsheet to have a go at.

Funding will come from those people who park their boats here and don't
use them (much) and also a increase in membership, plus we can get
funding from seminars and all that.

The 16teen and 18eteen clubs have pokies, yes, but say RCYC (Toronto
Canada) dose not, they simply re-model the funding and get it more from
corporate and members, so it very doable, they fund their juniors to a
far greater extent.

Obviously there will be a different level for Laser who pay only 1/2 as
much for storage.

Non - club boats, probably should get nothing.

The 16teen clubs also pay championship sponsorships, so if you go to the
worlds the club gives you say 2k. Its a nice way of doing it.

This is a very blunt instrument, once you start it, you can never stop
it so you need to think about it carefully, but if we make the club more
of a family institution and alter the focus, then we should get a
significant surge in participation.

It will also clear the dead wood out of the club, so those boats that
arn't used, disappear.

With regard to increasing fees, I assume the idea is to get the boats that are there sailing. Therefore the fee structure has to be thought out well.

Taking a 49er as an example. The fees are say $900 pa, if these are doubled to $1800 with possible sailing refund of $900 a lot of boats will be removed from the club, loosing revenue. My suggestion is to make the fees around 150% more at say $1400, with $50 reduction for every race day attended to a max of say 15 races, reducing the storage fee to $650. I know we are just giving our requests and management will put them into practice.

Not sure if I agree with handicap starts, when we were really struggling a few years back, coming in last by a long way gave us a real incentive to improve. The staggered start adopted in Twilight racing, works because the boats are not one design and boat speed is vastly different. But I assume it would be up to the individual as to what minute to start on.

Thanks Nigel for all the effort you are putting in.

Dave

49er sailors

We had a poor show from 49er sailors today at WSC. The intention was to discuss ideas for our sailing schedule next season. Judging by the poor show either people don't care about changing the format, don't think that getting involved will make any difference or are happy with the sort of ideas I have put forward on the forum.

I have had no real feedback on line so far which makes things tough for me to generate positive change.

We did however have a meeting and had a small number of 49er reps and some reps from other classes too. It was constructive and worthwhile.

There are a few clear issues that everyone agrees with. There are some others that other classes did not appear to support but can be adopted by 49ers if we choose. I started out on the basis of representing the 49ers in terms of putting something forward to the board regarding our race schedule next season (and this winter) and I am continuing in that direction.

The general issues that all agreed with are below:

1) Longer race courses.

2) Fewer laps (2 or 3).

3) Shorter wait times between races.

4) Marathon race around the harbour perhaps a couple of times in the year.

5) Start finish prize money subsidised by storage costs. This will effectively penalise those who store their boats but don't sail. This may involve an increase in storage fees that will then be potentially recouped by sailors. ( i suggest that for sailors, storage fees may drop). Sponsorship may also be achievable to help subsidise racers.

6) Improvement in publishing of race results (online, newspaper, club board).

7) Having racing every week thru the winter but only making every second week count towards series.

8) Some sort of program that helps young sailors make the transition to the adult classes. Some sort of morning practice/coaching session where juniors and seniors are matched up, may work.

9) some sort of organised coaching events for the different classes.

Specific 49er issues:

1) Club championship weekends turned into full sat and sun events. The other classes did not show the interest in this idea that I have for 49ers. If you dont agree speak now.

2) Handicap. General view was to allocate a start time handicap rather than multiple top marks (IE slow boats start earlier than faster boats).  General positive attitude towards handicap component of series.

3) I have had some positive feedback on holding thur night racing but we have struggled to get starters in the past.

4) Split the class via new and old rigs. Not sure exactly what this would look like. Ideas welcome.

5) Pursue a specific sponsor for our various series.

I am looking for some feedback here. If I dont get any I will push forward with a formal proposal on behalf of 49er sailors to the board, around the current ideas.

Please let me know if you dont agree with any of the above or have further thoughts.

Hi, I'm looking to get some rides on a 49er and should be available most Sundays
depending on uni work.
I'm 70kg, about 180cm, race an MG14 on Saturdays, and have sailed Sharpies and a
49er a couple of times.
If your looking for crew or know someone else who needs one, send me an email at
james.s.is@... or call me on 0422994966.
Thanks,
James

I have been asked to put together a basic race schedule for the winter.
Any feedback ideas at this stage are welcome.

Jeremy did suggest we race on saturdays. Any views?

Nigel

PS can someone provide me with instructions for signing up to this forum so I can forward to those not using it...I know I am not very IT savy.

Yep, an alternative maybe to have a seperate start and finish boat. That way the start guys just do starts and can be running them while other boats are finishing with another person/team recording finishing only.

May be much easier to keep the whole show turning over.

This is something to discuss with Jeremy and other race officials.

Just a thought Re: point 3 below (shorter wait times)........If we can secure more Race Volunteers to man the Bonny (our other motor boat), we could run simultaneous courses, one for dinghies and one for skiffs. The rescue boat and mark laying boats could probably manage both courses if the two courses are nearby.

Good stuff.
May I suggest that the club does send out a weekly short email just summarising the weekend race results and other significant news. I think we will get more attention that way that hoping people log onto the website regularly.
