Hi all, please see attached for a small sample of my photos from Sunday's racing.
I will be forwarding all photos of the racing on Sunday on a CD to Bill Robson and Mike O'Shea. The photos here, and the originals on the CD will be free of copywrite encumberances, and may be used by any person for any purpose.
The originals on the CD supplied to Bill will be of a resolution well above the capability of any normal desktop colour printer, so feel free to get a copy of the CD and run yourselves some new photos.
Sounds great Bill. The middle gate was used a lot in Aus in 98 and 99. I loved it. But as Paul said, the trade off is quick course laying and/or adjustment. So it is really only viable if:
The wind is a standard/predictable wind. Eg. Summer NE, or a "real" S or SW wind.
The race starter has the skill to set a "true" course and has a good helper boat with at least two people on board it.
On the other hand, going into opposite corners downwind is not a huge problem since we only spend about 3 minutes on a typical downwind leg and it is easy to watch the other boat(s) continuously.
I would be very sad if having a middle gate meant we no longer get a bottom gate! Every time I see a poorly laid gate and thus a large bunch of boats going for one bottom mark, it reminds me of how stupid, unsafe, boring and unfair (to teams not leading) are single bottom marks.
Quick race turn around has been a unanimous vote by every WSC 49er sailor, every year.

How would anyone feel if we doubled the length of the courses we sail (rather than making W3's), but put an extra downwind gate halfway down the course to help keep the fleet together more. We'd also get 2 convergence zones for the helm's stress levels (errr, enjoyment!) :)
We used to run this format lots in the UK, and it works really well - the mid downwind gate really helps to prevent people going to cornersville...
Also, this would be better race training for those who are going to bigger events in the coming year, as most races are alot longer than those that we sail atm...
Could we try this format in the mini-regatta coming up? - The B14s are always wanting to do longer races than us anyway, so it may work for them as well....?
It is essential to be able to let the mainsheet "run" at times.
Problem is that when the jib backs the main, the mainsheet
load is often quite light just when you need ease it. Also
critical in order to tack efficiently in gusty conditions and/or
when learning to accurately trim the main on a tack exit.
Of course skippers need to ease bulk mainsheet in bear-
aways and sometimes in gybe exits.
Beware of sticky gloves if:
Your mainsheet shock-cord (to floor eye) has too much pre-tension.
Your ratchet block works too well - although not normally an issue.
Your rear boom blocks are old - or your sheets are stiff - as JT mentioned.
Your rig settings are poor - thus requiring abnormally large amounts of mainsheet trimming.
Your skipper should not where them if he/she has trouble easing the mainsheet quick (and thus accurately) enough in bear aways and gybe exits.
If in doubt then do not use them. The ronstan synthetic leather gloves are very nice (although your fingers can get very cold in some conditions). With sticky gloves, you might gain 3 boat lengths in a spin set, but also lose 3 boat lengths per upwind tack since most crews "choke" the main early in a tack exit. Possible alternatives to sticky gloves are:
Better steering during spin hoists to reduce spin halyard load.
Thinner spin halyard.
Check mast internal halyard routing is not fouling.
Always soak new ropes in cold water for two days to remove the factory soap.
I have never tried this: But you could try putting some surf board wax onto your spin halyard and gently melting it in with a heat gun. Then that rope and only that rope will stick to your hands. I always do this to the spin sheets.
If skipper thinks he/she needs more grip for the jib sheet (don't laugh since peak jib sheet load is at least 3 times peak spinnaker sheet load) then consider new jib sheet blocks.

Hi,
Does anybody need a crew for this weekend for the mini regatta?
Or has a suggestion for who I could call to ask?
I would love to go for the sail this weekend.

Hi,
I use gloves from people working with glass. They are orange woolen
gloves with kind of soft plastic over. Looks like when you put honey
over it. I'm quite happy with them.
They last easy a season and are very cheap.

Wearing large cheap latex washing up gloves with the fingers cut off over normal
sailing gloves really grips well. Great for hoists but sometimes doesn't slip
enough when handling the main. The ones from Bunnings have a cotton back so
that they breathe a bit.

Hi Andy
Perhaps your sheets are full of salt crystals from
sailing on Botany Bay. If your trap height adjusters
are a little hard to cleat, this may because all the
ropes have been hardened by the salty water. If they
can't grip in a cleat then they won't be easy to hang
onto. You'll know because you will have tied the trap
adjustment off, or you will find the trap height slips
at the wrong times.
Was may experience. I used hotwater in a bucket and
some of mum's fabric softener, on vital sheets, every
few weeks. Good as gold thereafter.
An old kite will load the crew up more than a newie,
if the draft has moved aft.
You will know because the boat will heel in a gust
rather than accelerate.

Hi All,
was out sailing this arvo and the rudder failed (top split open).
Trying to get it fixed by saturday, but as a worst case scenario, does
anybody have a spare that we might be able to use??
Thanks
Andrew
Iam from Cairns and we have another 2 boats in Airlie beach (Aus 411, Aaron Linton) and another. Well the first I was planning on putting forward the Mission Beach Regatta (Oct). Same time as the NQ Nacra titles (boats from Brissy and even WA have attended). Invitation Race, race around Dunk Island. Sat/Sun regatta, a few 29ers up here as well. Trying to really get a 9er Division happening up here!
I have sailed at Yepoon the last two years (F18 States) and the only skiff that has been there was an MG14. But along with the F18 and Sharpie States a 49er states would go along with this regatta too. I was going to suggest that after this year that the states be on the May long weekend (to sail at yepoon) or the Easter Long weekend. For it all to fit in and select for other Venues on a format of. North, Central, South. Here is a list of some QLD Clubs (North>South) Douglas Sailing Club, Half Moon Bay Yacht Club, Tinaroo Sailing Club, Mission Beach Sailing Club, Townsville Sailing Club, Airlie Beach, Bowen (Port Denison Sailing Club), Hervey Bay Sailing Club, Mackay Sailing Club, Yepoon (KBSC), Bundaberg, Lake Cootharaba, Wivenhoe, Humpybong, RQYS Plus a few others...
Just to give an idea on what Im trying to do, is promote 49er/29er sailing across Queensland. So I feel the idea would be to get the two classes sailing states together (not this year as 29er titles have been sailed)
I like trying something different, so I would be keen to give it a try, so long as it didnt make the laying of the course any more difficult or time consuming.

would prefer longer legs and only 2 laps / hoists for this w/end

Sticking my nose in here... Hervey Bay is closer to Brisbane than Townsville by a long shot. Probably only 1/5 or 1/4 of the way north. But given that there are more boats in SE QLD then that may be a fair thing.
However, I'd suggest you guys consider the Keppel Bay Sailing Club at Yeppoon. It is a true half way point between Townsville and Brisbane, but more importantly it is a big dinghy club with superb facilities that rival the RQ.
It has a big profile in Sport in the region, has alot of upcoming talent, structured training programs, alot of boat owners and is a relatively wealthy club. For half a dozen 49ers to make an appearance there it may well do the class in QLD a world of good. Over the years there have been single appearances of a 12, a 14 (Damon Stover) and a 49er (Josh Fuller), but none of the classes have really made a permanent presence.
The downside is that it's a beach with waves (mind you, 10yo kids in sabots seem to manage), and the waters are perhaps a little like Port Phillip Bay or Moreton Bay outside Green Island (not Waterloo Bay) so there can be a bit more chop.

Hey Brent,
I sail from RQ in Brisbane (when I can find a crew!). There's one other boat here (dismal isn't it!) and I know of another couple of boats at Southport YC on the gold coast who will be racing with us come summer, and I think there are a couple more around redcliffe.
I'm happy to help out organising any QLD regatta from this end.... you're in North Queensland aren't you?
Maybe something halfway..... around Hervey Bay maybe?...... with a side-trip to Fraser Is on a lay-day? Just a thought.

Also If all the QLD 49er sailors could note their contact details. Anyone else who sails/owns a 49er in QLD Details also. so some form of Database of contact details can be built up and made available to other sailors and the rest of the 49er Associations.

Hi Brent,
I don't think there has been a Qld Association but there is a QLD rep position
(unfilled) on the Australian 49er Committee. You don't need to form a QLD Assoc
to have QLD titles, but all competitors do have to belong to the international
49er Assoc (via Aus fees) .

David

David, I thought some years back we instegated a motion or a rule that
if you did not attend the previous Nats, then you forfeited your right
to the next ones.
Bottom line is if they could not get them selves to Mooloolabha, why can
they expect anyone to go to Perth.
Its unfortunate but a very real sentiment.
My suggestion is we go to Victoria, or mid way, Ceduna or South
Australia somewhere neat and late in the season.

last week of school holidays, but I can piggy back your boat. Pretty
sure Harry is sailing with me.

I will drop down this week and pay balance of invoice.

Emma,
You are a champ, organising as always.
I am in if somebody is happy to help me get the boat up.
I don't have a trailer and now that a bought that silly yuppy sports car, I
don't have a tow bar either.
Not insurmountable hurdles and I will get over them I am sure.
I need to check to see if Tai will come along but I hope to make it. I am
happy to stay in the villas if there is space for me.

Currently there are 2 villas booked next door to each other booked at
Soldiers Point Caravan Park (Ridgeway Ave, Soldiers Point, Port Stepehens,
02 4982 7237) for Friday 15th July and Saturday 16th July - one is in my
name and one is in Mike O'Shea's name but I have paid the A$80 deposit on
both (A$160). Accomodation is max of 7 people in each villa but it is a
queen bed in one room and 2 bunks / 1 single in the other (a bit squashed).
Cost is $115 per night per villa and $15 per adult per night for all adults
beyond the first 2.
People that I think are currently included are:
Me plus crew/helm
Mike & Rebecca
Bill & Helen
Kynan Wall & Dot (Brisbane 49er sailors) - they were also looking for
accom for the 17th but I have not catered for this
Richie & Lissa
I have chosen the villas that have decent sized decks so we can sit outside
as a group but no BBQ. They recommended booking a table at the Brasserie at
the marina for the saturday night. People can camp at the same holiday park
for $25 a night per site.
