Masterworks for Violin and Piano -  Mozart, Schubert and Brahms

John Ma (violin) and Marie Searles (piano)

On Saturday 12 August at 7.30pm in the Wesley Music Centre outstanding young musicians John Ma and Marie Searles will present an attractive program of masterworks for violin and piano.

Both performers are distinguished graduates of the Canberra School of Music who have been undertaking postgraduate studies in Sydney and in September 2006 will be pursuing further studies in Europe.

Their program will include the major works Sonata in B flat major (KV 378) by Mozart, Sonatine in a minor, Opus 137 by Schubert and Sonata in G major Opus 78 by Brahms.

The Mozart work is one of the Auernhammer sonatas (named after one of his pupils) in which there is a marked evolution of the violin part towards a more equal partner in comparison to the earlier six sonatas. It was written during his time in Salzburg around 1779.

The Sonatine by Schubert belongs to a set of three sonatas written when Schubert was only nineteen, but they were not published until eight years after his death in 1836.  This performance will be based on the original manuscripts of the work.  The first publications were very different to what Schubert had initially composed.

Brahms’ Sonata in G major finally met his approval after four previous attempts at writing a violin and piano sonata.  This sonata has a relaxed and confident style reflecting the lyrical playing of the famous violinist Joseph Joachim and the holiday atmosphere of a mountain resort in Austria. It was composed and premiered in Vienna in 1879.

John Ma recently completed his Masters of Performance in Baroque Violin and Viola at the Sydney Conservatorium after completing his Bachelor of Music (1st Class honours) at the Canberra School of Music in 2002.  He was a full scholarship holder at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne in 2003. He will study period performance practice at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

Marie Searles completed her Bachelor of Music at the Canberra School of Music in 2002 and has had a keen interest in accompaniment and chamber music completing her Masters in Accompaniment at the Sydney Conservatorium in 2004.

This will be a rewarding concert for the many lovers of violin and piano music in Canberra.
