Anyone know when the regular Wednesday lunchtime recitals will
resume? Been missing some good organ music there lately.

Cheers from Arthur.

Just a reminder that this Friday, being ANZAC Day, St Andrew's Cathedral WILL be having an organ recital. Normally on Public Holidays we don't have recitals but this year, organist Brendon Lukin (who is a member of the RAAF Band) will be marching and playing tuba in the march and has offered to play a recital along with one of the trumpeters from the RAAF Band.

Because the march is expected to be still in progress in front of the cathedral during the normal recital time, the recital this week will be later at 2pm.

Unfortunately as I will be out of Sydney for a couple of days, I will not be present to welcome Brendon and Peter but I hope that many of you will be able to attend.

The program is as follows:

April 25 - ANZAC DAY - 2.00pm
Brendon Lukin (LAC) - organ
SGT Peter McCracken - trumpet
(courtesy RAAF Band)

Sonata for Trumpet and Organ

Variations on "America" (1891)

"The Hollow Men" (1944)

Gothic Toccata (Toccata Aurora)

Trumpet Concerto (2nd Mov't)

Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 in D

Evening Hymn and The Last Post

The Dambusters Hymn
A. Corelli (1653 - 1713)

Charles Ives (1874 - 1954)

Vincent Persichetti (1915 - 1987)

Graeme Koehne (b. 1956)

Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809)

Sir Edward Elgar (arr.Lemare) (1857- 1934)

arr Peter Jackson

Eric Coates (1886 - 1957)

Cheers,

Mark

Dear Mark

Just on the off chance that any of your members should be visiting the U.K. I wonder if it is possible to circulate the upcoming Battle of the Organs event at Leeds Parish Church. If last year's battle is anything to go on it will be a truly memorable occasion. I have attached a press release together with a poster of the event. Would you pass this on - many thanks.

Yours hopefully,

Dear Friends,

The Victorian Society of Organists brings the unhappy news of the sudden and sad death on 3 April of our President,
Ian Harrison.     He died peacefully, but was on his own at the time.    His wife discovered the situation when she
returned home.

.    The date and time of Ian's funeral is as yet unknown but is expected to be Thursday or Friday of
next week.

Ian was an extraordinary gifted musician, composer, and music educationalist with many friends and associates who will
greatly miss him.     Of the many music connections Ian has had,   he was currently a lecturer at Melba Conservatorium
and Mel Waters, the Director of the Conservatorium,  has organized
                      In Memoriam -  Ian Harrison
with the performance of Bach and Handel music at Trinity Collect Chapel, University of Melbourn, on Thursday
17 April at 1-10 p.m.

Jane Edwards, one of this country's leading exponents of baroque music who has toured nationally with the
Australian Chamber and Brandenburg Orchestras, will perform with Mel Waters.   The centrepiece of their
programme is Bach's sublime solo cantata Mein Herze Schwimmt im Blut, BWV 199, with additional continuo
from Johathan Bradley.

Mel has asked that we spread the news of this recital to colleagues and friends, as we specially remember Ian's contribution
to our music world.

Please telephone me (03 9893 3095) or email if you would like further information.

Dear Brian,
As far as I’m aware, a list such as this does not exist, but many competent organists from around Australia know at least one or two works of Franck. For Sydney organists, check out the organ recitals diary on http://www.sydneyorgan.com – someone’s bound to include some Franck sooner or later.

Cheers,
Daniel

Hello

How are you – busy as ever I am sure.

Yes, I think they all enjoyed it and they played well!

We have only just finalised the competition.  You will notice some changes to time limits, $$ for prizes, and extra hour rehearsal for Intermediate.  It will be Sat 26/7 at Christ Church St Laurence  - Dr J Forsyth is the adjudicator and the Open is on 3/8 at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta at 2.15pm with Thomas Trotter as the adjudicator.

TT is also giving a recital on Tuesday 5th August at Sydney University at 6pm.  It would be lovely if lots of young organists would attend, as of course, we know he is a wonderful organist.

Another date to please keep in mind is the 19th October – World Organ Day . . .some details in the journal, but not all are finalised.

I have a student  - Marianne Ching – who now goes to Loreto, Year 11.  Is there anyway she could have an hour per week on the organ to practise at St Aloysius??   Also I am away middle June to middle July, and was wondering whether you could fit her into your schedule for the month.  She practises well, and will hopefully do her Grade 5 exam later this year.  (She has Grade 8 piano).  She is very keen and got a highly commended certificate at the Junior comp last year.  She wants to enter the comp and will be in the Intermediate section . . . Of course this may be completely to busy for you, as that is the time of World Youth Day . . .Would you please let me know?

We will be sending letters to teachers within the next two weeks.

Stay well

All the best

Godelieve

Well we are well into the this year.   We are having Thomas trotter as the adjudicator for the Open . . .

Next year 2009, I am looking at the same time frame as this year for the Juniors and that is the week they are back at school Term 3 which allows rehearsal time in the holidays . . .I am asking you early this time.    Perhaps when you have a little spare time, you could check for me?  Not in a hurry though . . .

Dear friends, students, parents & colleagues,

Attached is advance notice of our annual Bach birthday celebration organ concert, at which you and your guests would be most welcome. The concert starts at 6.30pm will last approximately an hour.

Christopher Wrench is one of Australia's finest concert organists, and is particularly noted as a magnificent Bach player.

Admission is free and off street parking (via Stanley St) will be available from 6pm that evening. Grammar is a short walk from many fine restaurants.

You may be interested to know that Grammar's Mander organ was recently featured on the American 'Pipedreams' radio programme, with Paul Jacobs playing Bach.

If you have any enquiries about this concert please let me know.

Regards,

Bob Wagner.

PS This may be the first time that you have received such a notice from me. I plan to use this list to let you know about the annual Bach concert and any other major organ events happening at Grammar (probably a couple of emails per year). If you would rather not receive these, then please let me know.

Czech composer Petr Eben, whose wide variety of music has been performed around the globe, has died. He was 78.

Eben died late Wednesday at his home in Prague, his son Marek told the CTK news agency Thursday. He was battling an unspecified long-term illness.

Born Jan. 22, 1929, Eben showed a musical talent at early age. He was able to play piano at age 6 and organ at 9. A year later, he composed his first musical pieces.

After World War II, when he was interned by the Nazis in the Buchenwald concentration camp, he studied piano and composition at Prague's Academy of Music, and taught at Prague's Charles University and the Academy of Performing Arts.

From 1977-78, Eben was teaching composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

Throughout his career, he composed some 200 pieces, including works for organ and piano, orchestral and chamber compositions, masses, cantatas and music for children. Among them: the organ cycle "Job","Sunday Music", "Faust", the oratorio "Sacred Symbols" for the Salzburg Cathedral, "Windows" (4 movements according to Marc Chagall for trumpet and organ), and "Prague Te Deum."

He performed his music around the world, giving improvisational organ and piano concerts in such venues as Paris' Notre Dame, London's Royal Festival Hall and the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif.

He was made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by France in 1991 and received a high Czech decoration, the Medal of Merit, in 2002.

Hello Folks,

Good news received today from 2MBS-FM. Direct streaming of 2MBS-FM
to the internet has now commenced. Below is the text of a message
which I have posted to a number of organ chat lists.

Andrew Grahame

2MBS-FM – "Sydney's Fine Music Station" – is now online.

2MBS-FM is Australia's first FM radio station, commencing
broadcasting in 1975. It can be found at 102.5 on local Sydney radio
dials. It can now be reached anywhere in the world via live
streaming to the internet.

Staffed by volunteers and broadcasting 24 hours a day 7 days a week,
2MBS-FM is predominantly a classical music station, with occasional
excursions into jazz, contemporary music, folk music and other
special interest musical genres. Organ music is represented by two
broadcasts which I present each month.

"Colours of the King" goes to air on the second Saturday of each
month – 5 pm until 6 pm. This is the programme of the Organ Music
Society of Sydney. The next broadcast will be on Saturday 13th
October.

"Music for the Theatre Organ" can be heard on the 3rd Saturday of
each month – 6.30 pm until 7.00 pm. The next broadcast will be on
Saturday 20th October.

Programme details of the two organ broadcasts can be found on the
website of the Organ Music Society of Sydney.

www.sydneyorgan.com

Choose "concert diary" then "organ music on radio".

Sydney time is currently GMT +10 (daylight saving has not yet
commenced).

To tune in, log on to the station's web page at

www.2mbs.com

Follow the link in the lower left corner of the screen. Windows
Media Player will open and streaming will commence. A high-speed
broadband connection is desirable to avoid dropouts due to buffering.

Alternatively you can access the broadcast directly via this link

Does anyone know at what time the Johannus demonstration is to be at St Paul's Catholic Church, Dulwich Hill, on Sunday 9 September - there was a brief notice in last Sydney Organ Journal and perhaps the next Journal will be more precise.

Owing to the APEC Public Holiday, lack of public transport and parking in the city and many unknown security issues in the Town Hall area of Sydney, we have decided it would be best to cancel the lunchtime organ recital on Friday 7th September, which was to be given by John Aitchison.  John knew this may be the situation when he chose that date and so will use his program on a future date.
