A
new Compact Disc of the complete organ concertos by
Michel Corrette recorded will be launched during a
concert at St Aloysius College, Milsons Point on
Friday 8 September, 6.30 pm. This recording features
Pastor de Lasala playing the College's fine Létourneau
organ and accompanied by alumni - past and present -
of the College. The organ concertos, edited and
published by Pastor de Lasala, celebrate the 250th
anniversary of their original publication. This
recording of the concertos is unique in that the works
are presented for the first
time partly as solo works and partly with instrumental
accompaniment.
Another unique feature of this CD is the world
première recording of excerpts from Corrette's 3rd
organ book, also of 1756. Also that evening will be
the first Australian performance of Louis Vierne's
little known Cantique à St Louis

Masterworks
for Violin and Piano - Mozart, Schubert and Brahms
John Ma (violin) and
Marie Searles (piano)
On
Saturday 12 August at 7.30pm in the Wesley Music Centre outstanding young
musicians John Ma and Marie Searles will present an attractive program of
masterworks for violin and piano.
Both
performers are distinguished graduates of the Canberra School of Music who have
been undertaking postgraduate studies in Sydney
and in September 2006 will be pursuing further studies in Europe.
Their
program will include the major works Sonata in B flat major (KV 378) by Mozart,
Sonatine in a minor, Opus 137 by Schubert and Sonata in G major Opus 78 by
Brahms.
The
Mozart work is one of the Auernhammer sonatas (named after one of his pupils)
in which there is a marked evolution of the violin part towards a more equal
partner in comparison to the earlier six sonatas. It was written during his
time in Salzburg
around 1779.
The
Sonatine by Schubert belongs to a set of three sonatas written when Schubert
was only nineteen, but they were not published until eight years after his
death in 1836. This performance will be based on the original manuscripts
of the work. The first publications were very different to what Schubert
had initially composed.
Brahms’
Sonata in G major finally met his approval after four previous attempts at
writing a violin and piano sonata. This sonata has a relaxed and
confident style reflecting the lyrical playing of the famous violinist Joseph
Joachim and the holiday atmosphere of a mountain resort in Austria. It was
composed and premiered in Vienna
in 1879.
John
Ma recently completed his Masters of Performance in Baroque Violin and Viola at
the Sydney Conservatorium after completing his Bachelor of Music (1st
Class honours) at the Canberra School of Music in 2002. He was a full
scholarship holder at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne in 2003. He
will study period performance practice at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
Marie
Searles completed her Bachelor of Music at the Canberra School of Music in 2002
and has had a keen interest in accompaniment and chamber music completing her
Masters in Accompaniment at the Sydney Conservatorium in 2004.
This
will be a rewarding concert for the many lovers of violin and piano music in Canberra.

I will be playing all six of Bach's organ trio sonatas in
a series of the regular Wednesday (1.15 pm) lunchtime
recitals at St James', King Street.
The first recital, featuring sonatas # 1 & #2, will be next
Wednesday, August 2nd.
The trio sonatas are amongst the most listener-friendly of
Bach's organ works, perhaps because the human ear/brain can
follow three strands of counterpoint without too much
difficulty.
Playing this music is always a joy, even in an empty church. If
an audience turns up, that will be even nicer!
John Aitchison.
Greetings from Auckland! I am hoping to enlist your support in helping us to spread the word about the concert event detailed below. It may be that some organ enthusiasts might be interested in making the trip over to hear John Scott. (I certainly would, if I lived in Australia!). Would you be willing to help us by taking a few moments to forward this message and its attachment to all your email contacts in your organists community? We would really appreciate your help.
With thanks and all best wishes
Indra Hughes
I am writing to tell you about an important development for Auckland choir Musica Sacra: we have purchased the pipe organ that was built for and first used at the Royal Wedding in St Paul's Cathedral, London in 1981 to accompany Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's performance of Handel’s “Let the Bright Seraphim”. Our Press Release is attached. As you can see, it is a remarkable and beautiful and historically significant instrument. At the royal wedding the organ was played by John Scott, one of the finest and most famous organists in the world. He is most celebrated for his time as Organist and Director of Music of St Paul's Cathedral, and is now Organist and Director of Music at the prestigious church of St Thomas, Fifth Avenue, New York. Since it was Mr Scott who played the organ at the royal wedding, we are delighted that he will be our special guest at the inauguration of it in Auckland on 26 August. As mentioned on our release, you can see a lot of further detail on our website <http://www.musicasacra.org.nz/> All my contact details are below, and on the attached release. This will be a very special event for those who love choral and organ music and we would be delighted to welcome people from Australia who may be interested in making the trip over for it. Yours sincerely Indra Hughes
St Stephen's UC, Macquarie St will be holding a HymnFest to celebrate the (alternate) Feast Day of St Stephen on Sunday 6th August at 3pm. The program will include favourite hymns, accompanied by the 1934 Hill, Norman and Beard Pipe Organ (3/44) played by Peter Guy, St Stephen's Uniting Church Choir, and featuring special guest, Tenor soloist Paul Bevan (ABC Classic FM Classic Breakfast presenter). The afternoon's MC will be Rev'd Dr Matthew Jack (minister of St Stephen's)
We hope to make this an ecumenical event, so please spread the word within your parishes. Would be great to see everyone there.
At St Andrew's Cathedral this Friday, at the usual time of
1.10pm, I will be playing JSB's "Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in
C", and the second half of Couperin's "Mass for Parishes"
(whoops, sorry Mr Jensen, shouldn't use the naughty "M" word
at St Andrew's)

Dear Godelieve
It was good to meet you (at last) last Sunday. I hope the
trip to Brisbane
was considered worthwhile by those who attended.
A number of people expressed interest in the Mantras of Andrew Newcombe. There is a
recent recording of a number of them (not including the one I played) by David
Hamnes, reviewed in the April OHTA News.
Unfortunately I am at home convalescing after some minor surgery last Tuesday
so I cannot get the details from work where I keep all such things; however,
the details could be obtained directly from the journal.
