All the organ music which has been left to the Society for members to borrow has been uploaded to the website for members to peruse. (Go to the new "Library" page).  When I was organising the collection some years ago, I remember that some of the music listed was beyond repair and could not be included. I did not have this listing at that time to make a note of what had to be thrown out, but I don't seem to remember it being a great deal so most of it should still be available.  Thanks to Kathy Drummond for putting these two catalogues together for me to upload.

Cheers,

Mark

Please note that Andrej's recital at St Andrew's Cathedral tomorrow (Friday 2nd March) will have to start at 1pm (10 minutes earlier than usual) owing to a funeral commencing at 2pm. The funeral directors have advertised the funeral as starting at 1.45pm so people may be arriving earlier than expected and the recital will need to be finished by 1.30pm.

Please pass this message on to anyone you think might be attending and who doesn't get these messages.

Cheers,

Mark

Organ Donor Awareness Week recitals - it was Amy's idea - and a pretty smart one too.  If anyone has better ideas, let's hear then.

All seems to be well on my PC.

Whose idea is the Organ Donor gig? I thought we did not want any connection with that activity which was reason for changing name.

Dear all,

I have done some more work on the appearance of the Society's website today after receiving several comments from those using laptops. These computers have much smaller monitors than most home computers so this meant that those viewing our site on laptops had to do a lot of scrolling back and forth.  Having a menu down the left hand side of the page took up a lot of valuable space so I have removed this and inserted a drop down menu at the top of each page. I have also tweaked all the pages so that they rarely take up more than 800 pixels in width.

I have checked the site on several Mac browsers and all is OK.  Could you please check the site http://sydneyorgan.com on your own computers and let me know if there are any problems, particularly with PCs. According to the site I got the information from on how to set up drop down menus, it should work on all browsers and computers. Hopefully this will be true!

Thanks,

Mark

Hello again Mark,

I’ve had a quick look at the website and it works fine on my laptop. It’s a Lenovo (IBM) which uses Windows XP. However I’m fortunate in that mine has a wide screen which is 1680 by 1050 pixels so I wasn’t having to scroll with the previous website. I went through various parts of the pulldown menu and all appeared to work well.

From time to time I’ve mentioned the website on air, but sometimes I’m beaten by time. I have been recently trying to cut the music part of the programme back a little to leave plenty of time for some mention of the Society as well as the concert announcements, and I will be continuing to aim that way. The 2MBS Programming Committee is rather fussy and I have to tread a fine line here as they don’t like too much talk relative to the music content.

Regards,

Andrew

I'll be presenting the Friday lunchtime recital at St
Andrew's this week, at the usual time of 1.10 pm.

The programme will consist of a Mendelssohn sonata (# 2,
predictably, since that's the easiest one, and the one
everyone plays); JSB's "Dorian" Toccata & Fugue; and
Messiaen's "Le Banquet Celeste".

Gee it would be nice to have an audience.

John Aitchison.

Does anyone know of a London church of St Mark in Audsley Street? I came across a review of a late 1948 Decca recording by Jeanne Demessieux supposedly in this church where the organ was described as superlative, etc, etc, typical of the work of the English organ-builder at his best.

Does anyone have the recording or can verify details of the church and organ? Perhaps the church no longer exists.

Any comments or hints would be useful. I have checked Wikipedia and Googel lists of London churches but without result.

Just a reminder that this week's organ recital at St Andrew's Cathedral is TOMORROW at 1.10pm and NOT on Friday this week.

John Aitchison is playing:

Versets  on  "A  Solis  Ortus  Cardine" - Arthur Wills (b. 1926)

Two  Noëls - Louis-Claude  Daquin (1694 - 1772)

Five  meditations  from  "La  Nativite  de  Seigneur" - Olivier  Messiaen (1908 - 1992)

There will be no recital on Friday 29th as the Young Organists' Day will be on in the Town Hall.

I have just heard from Marrickville Heritage Society that All Saints' Church, Petersham, is being re-opened on afternoon of Sunday 11 November after three years renovation. A Jazz concert is to be held from 2-5 pm, so obviously the organ has continued to languish if even still there. I wonder what the renovations involved - surely not removal of the fine woodwork surrounding the chancel, holy table, and so on - but I would not be surprised igiven the current Sydney Diocese atitudes.

Beautiful Baroque!

On Sunday 5 November three well known Canberra performers will present an attractive concert of gems from the baroque repertoire for voice, flute and piano. The concert will be in the Wesley Music Centre, 20 National Circuit, Forrest, at 3pm.

It will offer an opportunity to hear rarely performed Vivaldi cantatas as well as glorious, popular operatic arias by Handel and stately, emotive music of JS Bach including a sonata for piano and flute and arias from the St Matthew and St John Passions.  There will be duets and trios to delight the ears.

The performers will be Louise Page (soprano), Phillipa Candy (piano) and Teresa Rabe (flute).  All three are highly respected graduates of the Canberra School of Music.

Louise Page was the 1989 vocal grand finalist in the ABC Young Performer of the Year competition, she won the inaugural Mietta¡¯s City of Melbourne Song Recital Award in 1995 and over the years she has performed in operas, oratorios and concerts in Europe and Australia.  She studied with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Geoffrey Parsons and other renowned artists.  In Canberra she has appeared with orchestras, in operas, with choral societies and for Art Song Canberra.

Phillipa Candy is a graduate of the Canberra School of Music and has Masters degrees from Hobart and Philadelphia.  Since 1984 she has been a professional accompanist, private teacher, repetiteur, coach and conductor.  She was the founding pianist with the group Austral Skies which toured for Musica Viva, and has been guest musical director and conductor for Canberra City Opera.  She studied with Geoffrey Parsons and in 1992 was inducted in the Pi Kappa Lambda Society for musical excellence.

Flautist Teresa Rabe came to Canberra to study at the Canberra School of Music with Virginia Taylor and Vernon Hill.  She graduated with distinction in 1992.  Since then she has had a busy career as performer,  teacher and adjudicator of eisteddfods and festivals.  She has played with such eminent bodies as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Canberra Symphony Orchestra and The Haydn Bande, as well as solo recitals throughout the region.

Violin Masterworks

Jack Glatzer ¨Cinternational virtuoso

Jack Glatzer, world renowned violinist, will be performing violin masterworks in the Wesley Music Centre on Friday 10 November at 8pm.  The associate artist will be pianist Robert Schmidli.

He is one of the very few violinists to perform all 24 Caprices of Paganini in one concert as well as the complete solo works of Bach in a series of two concerts. He is a world class violinist with a wealth of instrumental beauty at his disposal.

Robert Schmidli Is a medical specialist in endocrinology and diabetes in addition to being a musician.  He has made frequent appearances as a soloist, accompanist and chamber music player in Canberra and country New South Wales. He has performed as a soloist with orchestras in New Zealand and Australia and with a number of international artists including Jack Glatzer and George Zukerman.

Dear Hugh,

I will be unable to attend the meeting.  Could you plrease offer my apology.  I also have a pile of music for the Rummage Table - will it be operating this year?  If so, I'll contact Andrew (who I assume is still the organist as Strathfield) about dropping it off.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Mark,

Kevin Clancy was there and maybe took photos; Geoff Lloyd also but I’m not sure about the photos.

As I was in Auckland on the OHTA Conference, I missed out being able to attend the recent Organ Music Society ramble. Did anyone take any digital photos of the organs visited for me to upload to the website?

Cheers,

Mark

The Opera and Arts Support Group Inc is a charity established mainly it seems to raise funds for budding opera singers. I have been asked to advertise its activities, and especially the following.

On Friday 6 October at Sydney Grammar School Andrej Kouznetsov is playing the organ as part of an evening to honour Dr Ian Dicker who had the organ installed in memory of his parents.

There is no email contact. Phone enquires may be directed to 9327 6069 or 9386 5305, and one has to apply for tickets at $50 a head. All donations are tax deductible.
