Hi all,
For those of you who were looking forward to the FUSE night on Nov 17 - I'm
sorry to say
that we had to cancel because our venue double booked and as the festive season
is soon
upon us, it is hard to find good available venues.
BUT DON'T DESPAIR ......
URBAN EXCENTRICS will be playing at the Newtango Xmas Party on Friday 15
December.
Watch this space for details!!
Have a great weekend dancing.
Anne-Maree
Hi everyone. Sad to hear about the Meltdown. A few observations regarding venues, from my year or two in the tango. This is not for Kazza's benefit, it's for the rest of you. So that you start thinking of venues and she can get some good leads rather than having to comb the whole town on her lonesome, wearing out her great dancing legs! Not that they are likely to wear out in the near future; but if it's going to happen let it be on the dancefloor not on the venue trail.
Salsa works well in bars because the salsa music is upbeat and poppy, has made inroads into popular western music and is subject to fashion. Salsa is a dance craze because it started long after the birth of Cuban music and has been displaced there recently. Bar owners are always looking for an upbeat craze that brings young girls into bars. Young guys follow them in and buy lots of drinks. You can do salsa in "regular" bars provided the management is a bit visionary and doesn't count the drinks-per-dancer. You think I'm joking? Some of them do it!!!! They can tell you exactly how much they made or lost to within fifty cents or so.
Tango is not a dance craze; it grew naturally out of Argentine culture right at the start and it's still there 150 - odd years later, albeit changed to suit the new faces of that culture. It's sophisticated and doesn't attract craze-oriented here-today-gone-tomorrow young girls into bars, therefore no foolish young men to drink lots of beer.
Hence the problems with Melt and Picadilly: they think the dancing will make their regular customers uncomfortable and they don't like the music, therefore assume their customers won't like it.
On the other hand: There's a restaurant in Auckland, NZ that has tango on the menu and in all it's advertising. You can dance there every Wednesday night and it's open other times for special events, eg a tango festival in town. If you turn up and want to dance at other times they'll make a space for you if they aren't too busy, and they'll play your tango music. The original owner was Argentine, the present is Turkish. Both cultures have long association with the tango and a different restaurant scene to our culture. It's expected that people will play music and dance in Argentinian and Turkish restaurants. The owners are comfortable with that cultural millieu.
There's another bar in Wellington NZ run by Chilenos. It's called Latinos and makes a deal out of being Latin. There's always salsa, samba and tango going on there. The Chilenos naturally expect people to dance in bars. Part of their culture. They have a great sound system and will turn it up really loud if the dancers wish, they aren't scared of scaring their "regular" customers away. None of their customers are "regular".
There's a cafe in Christchurch NZ called the Door which has a small hall behind it which belongs to a church. The cafe is expected by the church to provide the space for community groups. It's a condition of the lease. The church uses the cafe's rent to pay for the space. The Chch tango scene have been using this funky alternative space for years. The cafe aren't allowed to put tables and chairs in there, so whatever the dancers eat and drink is a bonus for them.
I hope this helps with some insights into places you know that you maybe hadn't considered. I suspect a restaurant with a spare space and a Latin/Turkish/Finnish owner might be a good bet; someone who would consider dancing to be an attraction and not a potential detraction for the "regular" customers. Go forth and multiply!!!
Cheers ... Mark.

Hi everyone. Following the spectacular success of ganchos relajados and introduction to enganche, this week I'll be treating Movimientos oponados: opposed movements. One of the keys to tango "nuevo" in case you hadn't heard! 7:30 on the corner of Booth and Johnston Sts, Annandale.

Hello
The lovely Anne Marie has offered her Paddington venue up to the
Wednesday night crowd for the same $5 entry/donation price.
So please make your way to Paddington if you still want to enjoy a
tango or two on Wednesday evening from 8:30pm.
You can get the directions from www.newtango.com.au.
I have been contacting some venues and am awaiting an outcome on their
decisions, i'll let you know as soon as we have something.
Enjoy
Karen
Hello Tangueros
It is with great sadness that Melt Bar have advised that they will be
discontinuing the Tango milonga on Wednesdays beginning this week. It
hasn't been viable - a common problem with hosting tango in bars
apparently.
Don't despair however! I am already in discussions with other venues
and will advise their outcome as soon as possible.
Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed and supported this venue.
Stay tuned and continue to watch the Wednesday night space on
www.sydneytango.com.au
Kind regards
Karen

Jairo and Amy have cancelled tonight's milonga at Hyde Park's Bar
Quattro due to the weather forecast of rain and wind. Please pass this
on to anyone you think might miss the SMS or this email.
My advice is to stay on the south side of William St. The traffic's
also less congested there. Going North along Darlinghurst Rd there are
usually spots available within the last two blocks (start looking when
you cross Liverpool St, which is not too far to walk). Metered,
mostly, but only $1.10 an hour and only until 10pm.
Hope that helps!

Hi all,
At the Lazy Sunday Afternoon Milonga this Sunday at my place, I would like us to
welcome
Robin into the tango world. Please come and help me celebrate Klaus and Ulla's
little
treasure by dancing and wetting the baby's head!
Usual story 3pm and 4pm classes followed by milonga from 5pm. Contact me for

OH -and thanks to all those who came to MELT to help me celebrate my birthday
and the
lovely pressies - I hope to see you there tonight - YEY!!
There is a Melbourne tango dancers Yahoo group (you'll find a calendar
there too) - seems it is not as
easy to get things moving in Melbourne as it is in Sydney, if you read
Fabio's last posting. Go to http://mtd.socialtango.com/ and register.
For those who haven't heard (and there's always someone!) Saturday
night's milonga (La Cumparsita) is at The Quarryman's hotel, cnr.
Pyrmont Bridge Rd and Harris St, Pyrmont, starting at 8pm .
Hi Everyone. A reminder that enganches (1) will commence at Annandale this Thursday at 7:30pm. There'll be a recap of ganchos relajados, I know some of you went to Hyde Park or stayed at home conserving dollars after Cecilia!
I have Rebecca Rashid from Seattle helping me with the classes. That way the followers can see how a really good tangolady deals with Pulpo's stuff. Also Rebecca is really nice, which should balance my delicately dry delivery perfectly! Cheers ... Mark.

Introduction:Better Times in Buenos Aires?
When I was a teenager
there was a slogan “Beer is Better”. Better than WHAT? demanded our Clear Thinking teacher. Better
than water or wine? Better than it used to be? Better for
whom? For me? Precisely. All of the above. Read into it
what you will!
This
book is about following your heart as it throbs to the music of tango. Some
people feel this way about the blues, others about
Celtic music, many about Mozart. The awed hush of the concert hall is visible
on the rapt faces of tango dancers. Could it be that music is indeed a higher
spiritual language of which we have not broken the code? The language of the
soul?
‘No-one listens to
the words’ said a musician friend. But he was talking about popular
modern music. Tango is neither pop nor modern. It has the depth of
classical music, and like Bach or Beethoven, grows on you more as you know it
better. The poetry of the words adds to its power, yet the experience of the
music is non-verbal. It cannot be put into
words, but, like Tchaikovsky made visible by Fonteyn & Nureyev, when
danced from the heart, it can beseen.
Dancers,who really feel tango,
make the music visible.
What the dancers feel
themselves goes very much deeper, for to them it is as if, together, they
become the music. Herein lies the clue to the addictive passion that is tango.
In 2002 I spent a year
exploring how this passion took over dancer’s
lives. I wrote a story told in music & song, dance & mime, then
produced it with the help of a wonderful band of tango lovers. I even danced in
it too. All of this in Perth,
the most isolated capital city in the world. Two years later I made the
pilgrimage to Bs.As. For all those dancers who have also made it, only
to wonder how they ever got to this not quite sane city, in fact, how they got this hooked, I hope this story will throw some
light on why their lives have changed for ever. And for me at least, also
for the better. For newcomers, I hope
those insights that come from living here and communicating in Spanish, will
help them have better times too!
This is travel writing at its best, straight from the heart
and sparkling with interest. Very engrossing and enjoyable. Brilliant!

Hola amigos,
Thanks Alex for the uploaded photos!
In future everyone (where are our keen photographers .. Alex, Tamara,
Janusz, Karen etc.) can also add their own Tango photos to the
community's very own photo album. Especially private Tango birthday
parties and other special events - which not everyone can always
make..
Just click on photos on our website
http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/sydneytangodancers
I have also added another link for free NeoTango
(traditional+fusion+alternative/non Tango) music to listen to.
There are now a number of fantastic resources (music, videos, info)
in the links section on the community website.
You will need (to create - if you haven t yet) a yahoo ID to use
these features.
Happy dancing and see you on the dance floor,
Klaus
Hi everyone. Just to clarify for those of you who got the earlier (incorrect) information, axis tango classes are at 6:30 beginner, 7:30 advanced/experimental and 8:30 practica tomorrow, Thursday 19th.
Also to apologise for the spelling mistake. Relajados is spelled with a J and not with an X.
Hello Tango lovers
Just a quick reminder that the Melt Bar Launch is on tonight.
It's going to be a fabulous night, complete with live music and
performances. So hope you can make it.
Below are the details.
Tango@TheMelt
Every Wednesday evening from 9pm
12 Kellet Street
Kings Cross
Enjoy the cool ambiance of Sydney's newest and exciting venue for
Neuvo Tango @ The Melt Bar
Groove with lovers of tango losing themselves in the music and the
moment. Meet the teachers whose passion of tango is contageous.
Ongoing there will be occassional live music and performances as
well as a playlist that is ever evolving and contributed directly
from Buenos Aires.
"When you dance tango you become ready to move beyond lifes fears.
You acquire a way to celebrate lifes romance. You dance of dreams of
passion, tension and release frustration, conflict, separation from
home and loved ones and of resolution. You dance of your destiny in
the making." anon
From 8.30-9.30 Tiempo de Tango will appear at Bar Quattro (behind St
James Stn at the end of Market St) - FOC - the only cost is $5 entry.
But please buy a coffee, a glass of wine or something. We may lose the
venue if we don't spend more money there - and that would be awful. At
the moment the noodle market is next to the cafe and the park looks
amazing.
Hi All,

Hello to All- I am a fellow tango dancer who will be visiting Syndey from Dec. 9-12. I would like to dance some tango while there and see the sights and was wondering if anyone has a spare room/area for accommodation? I am willing to reimburse, also.
Hi all
Just a quick note to let you know that we won't be proceeding with a
class prior to the milonga.
This decision is two fold - I should have looked at the lists of class
options already on Sydney Tango, before suggesting this. There is a
veritable smorgasbord out there. The Melt Bar milonga is the perfect
followup to those classes already available and there won't be any
conflict as a result.
Also we want the milonga to be spontaneous and it will be a lot less
work for me :)
Thanks to those who made the effort to vote.
In regards to the other poll, we have a majority of $5 entry, which
won't put off those who have already been to a class, but will top up
whatever is taken at the bar.
Hope to see you on the 18th if not before.
Karen

Hi guys,
As we have all these handy tools here and so many members of the
group - why no start our own favourite dance music database?!
I have created the first four records and will add more in future if
it appears being used ;)
Go to the website http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/sydneytangodancers
login and click on database, then on on the specific music database.
You can see all entries, add your own and search for songs etc..
Obviously one persons favourite is not the same for everyone but
chances are good that others may (at least) like it too!
You can always sort it after genre if you are e.g. not into
electronic tango.
Perhaps some milonga organisers/djs in sydney might get some ideas
too!
Happy dancing,
Klaus
Hello
Thanks for the great feedback, and yes, sorry for the polls, its
just interesting to get dancers thoughts without talking to you all
individually.
As I'm new to organising these things you'll have to bear with me.
While I'd prefer not to collect money at the door I'll do what it
takes to ensure the longevity of the venue.
This poll seems to be in favour of the $5 door entry, so we have a
little top up to give to management, while making it a very cheap
night out. I'm hoping dancers will come to me to offer their
contribution, rather than chasing them up, I would prefer to be
dancing ;)
I like the idea of having a class prior to a milonga, but that's me,
because I can only dance a couple of nights a week. To those dancers
who can dance 5 nights a week, I am eternally envious. However if
only a few show interest in this idea, then the milonga only it will
be. It is also up to the teachers as to whether they want to take
the punt on a small class turning up. This can be seamless though,
people only interested in the milonga can just turn up for the
milonga.
The music will continue to be the priority and ever evolving. While
Lindsay may be on the other side of the world, he continues to
provide input and music to our milonga. Was that 1500 hours of new
music Lindsay? It will only be lacking one person, Lindsay care to
join us?
The opening night will indeed be a night to remember. Can't wait!

Hola fellow tangueros,
Tomorrow's (Saturday) workshop "Fun combinations with boleos" is the
last one before the break on the following weekend (Oct 14,15).
So instead of coming to Newtown next week we could see each other in
Chatswood - where Cecilia Gonzales does her workshops and practica.
FunkyTango will resume the regular programm the week after on Saturday
21st Oct with a special workshop on technique: "Pro-active leading &
following - the latest developments in Tango technique and
communication between the dancers."
Happy dancing and see you on the dance floors!

Hello everyone.Mark here.Announcing the start of new classes and a supervised practica on Thursdays in Annandale (between Glebe and Leichhardt); starting Thursday 19 October.
I'm calling my outfit Axis Tango 'cos it seemed like a good idea at the time.I'll be concentrating on modern style and method (not surprisingly for those that know me at all!) with a strong emphasis on technique and "philosophy" of tango. In other words I'll be giving people the tools to create what they want in the tango and ideas about how to think it through for themselves.I'm not interested in making distinctions between "traditional" and "nuevo" tango.
I find what is common to all styles and eras and make that the basis of the teaching.
There's beginners at 6:30 pm, so if you know anyone who's thinking of starting I'd appreciate your letting them know I'm out there. It's $120 for 8 weeks but I collect money on the second week.
So if people decide the tango or my approach to it is not for them they get one week for free.
There's advanced/experimental at 7:30pm.This is a modern/extremist class where I show very advanced moves by building them up from basic techniques and ideas (or breaking them down into basic techniques and ideas). That way people can learn something about all of tango and get something cool to do to modern or ancient music. It's $20 casual or you can buy a concession of 8 weeks for $120; use them when you want, they don't expire.
I'll do a different subject each week; email me tangomark@...
to find out what it's going to be.I'm working on a website so that people can just go and have a look for themselves; details of that will appear here when it's ready.
The first week will be ganchos relaxados; how to transform gancho into a smooth sinous circular movement. This will transform other moves such as giro, sacada, volcada.
Week two will build on week one, the subject will be introduction to enganche .This is the "octopus" tango invented by my teacher El Pulpo. It's a sinous way to link gancho, sacada, barrida, sentada, and even volcada and colgada together as well as a beautiful thing to do in its own right. Come to both weeks: nobody in Sydney is doing a good gancho relaxado yet, so it won't hurt to do week 1. I can't teach all of Pulpo's stuff in 2 weeks of course, but we'll make a fine start.
Week 3 depends on what happens in week 1 and 2; I've got a bucket full of great things to show.
There will be a supervised practicafrom 8:30 to 9:30 with mostly modern tango music, not a lot of jazz and no cortinas. When I say supervised it means I'll be available for teaching so that people can get individual help or clear up anything they didn't get in the class. I can also settle disputes about what happened and what should have happened, talk endlessly about my precious opinions, that sort of thing.Milonga rules don't apply; you can stop and work on something, stick with one partner the whole time or whatever. It's $2 or free for students. My students, that is.
Transport: For cars take the Parramatta Rd, turn at Johnston St, between Norton St and Pyrmont Bridge Rd. Alternatively come over the Anzac bridge or along the Western Link, turn into The Crescent, then right into Johnston St.
Booth St is midway between Parramatta and The Crescent, the church you want is opposite the post office. It's not the church with the big steeple, that is 1 block south of Booth St. Annandale is quiet and suburban, plenty of parking in the streets around the church.
For buses take the 470 from Circular Quay via George St, or 370 from Clovelly via Zetland and Alexandria up King St, they meet on Broadway and go via Glebe Point Rd and Wigram Rd. to Booth St; get off at the Johnston St corner.
From the other direction the 370 starts at Leichhardt bus depot behind Pioneer Park and goes down Norton st, via Leichhardt town hall to Balmain Rd.The 470 comes from Grove St along Lilyfield Rd, then back down Catherine St to Moore St (where it joins the 470).
They both go along Booth St; get off at the Johnston St corner.
Thanks for reading such a long posting, see you there! Mark.
I did like the Soho Bar Milonga phenomenon, because it was a
(polite) rebel: it did not try to attract anybody with anything.
Wasn't this itself an attractive principle?
Nobody was asked to vote, to answer polls, to express any support…
yet dancers voted, expressed the support with… their legs… some
(legs) remarkably well. The rebel grew and felt well.
It all stemmed from "Ether" - neither present or absent Lindsay's
egoism. Yes, I would like to call him a "bastard egoist", but I have
not got any substance to support it. Ooops !
Oh, yes I have one: he left for Buenos Aires and continues to
complain about utterly boring Milongas held there. What a splinter!
Personally I don't think that pleasing majority, helps the pleasing
act itself at all.
I suspect, the poll on what the future Milonga at Melt should
contain, indicates the presence of some kind of "vacuum" or should I
write absence of "substance".
A variety of good music is a must! That attracts Tango Lovers. It
worked at Soho. That is the most important effort that must not be
neglected by the organiser.
Do we need the 5th wheel in the car? Of course we do need it (in the
boot):
Let's keep classes with teachers at schools.
That is where they do their great work.
Let's not melt too many things together, rather refine… the presence
and character of this new milonga: "The Refinery @ The Melt"
>
> Fabulous News!!! Melt Bar have decided to host us on Wednesday nights.
Onya Kazza,
You're a legend.
Yeah, the place beats Soho hands down as a tango venue so get your
butts down there! (If I was as charming as Karen, I would have tried
to organise something there instead too ;-) )
By the way, it's particularly appropriate for tango because I believe
it has at times in the past been a swinger's club and host to a phone
sex business. I was too young at that time to have much interest in
swinging or phone sex, but I'm sure there's someone around who can
confirm that rumour.
Err, but anyway, the point I originally wanted to make was: nice work,
and I hope it will be a great night.
Lindsay.

This will transform other moves such as giro, sacada, volcada.Week two will build on week one, the subject will be introduction to enganche
.This is the "octopus" tango invented by my teacher El Pulpo.
There will be a supervised practicafrom 8:30
to 9:30 with mostly modern tango music, not a lot of jazz and no cortinas. When I say supervised it means I'll be available for teaching so that people can get individual help or clear up anything they didn't get in the class.
I can also settle disputes about what happened and what should have happened, talk endlessly about my precious opinions, that sort of thing.
Milonga rules don't apply; you can stop and work on something, stick with one partner the whole time or whatever. It's $2 or free for students. My students, that is.
Transport: For cars take the Parramatta Rd, turn at Johnston St, between Norton St and Pyrmont Bridge Rd.Alternatively come over the Anzac bridge or along the Western Link, turn into The Crescent, then right into Johnston St.
From the other direction the 370 starts at Leichhardt bus depot behind Pioneer Park and goes down Norton st, via Leichhardt town hall to Balmain Rd.The 470 comes from Grove St along Lilyfield Rd, then back down Catherine St to Moore St (where it joins the 470).They both go along Booth St; get off at the Johnston St corner.
Thanks for reading such a long posting, see you there! Mark.
