Hi All,

Sorry for such a late notice email, but we have been trying to work
out what will be happening with the O-Week stall this year.

O-Week Starts tomorrow, 3rd of March and will conclude on Friday,
5th March.  The stall location is yet unknown to us, but please do
look for us on the maps.

We would like as many of you to join up again this year, and for
some of the regulars to come to the stall and help us out, so people
aren't stuck there for the entire day without having breaks and
being able to go off and get timetables and join other clubs etc.
So, those of you who know what it's like at the O-Week stall, please
do come and help again this year.

Prices for membership has changed this year.
Due to a funding cut (again....) from the Sports Union, we have
decided to have a permanent range fee tier system.

For All members, the cost of joining us this year is one of two
options.

a) $8 membership + $1/shoot range fee starting from the 5th April.
This gives new members a 3 week window to try it before they decided
to pay for range fees and continual shooting.

b) $15 membership for the entire semester.  No range fees.  This
will save $18 for the semester ($8 membership + 26 shoots at $1 each
shoot).

Second semester will be $15, as option, and for new members, it will
be $8 +range fee immediately, or $15.

For those who think this is very pricey, please allow me to remind
you that at $30 a year, we are by far still the cheapest Archery
Club in NSW, perhaps all of Australia.  The UNSW archery club
charges $4/shoot in range fees flat.  You can't even shoot a entire
semester for under our yearly price.

So, please do come by, join up again for another year of shooting.
We will be having another Novices competition, this time Official
University Games, Perhaps another Outdoor Indoor, and also our
yearly Club Championships.  Plenty to get involved with.

Our AGM will be held on the 2nd of April during the start of our
usual shooting session.  Please come and vote for the 2004 Exec, and
participate in our discussions for what is happening this year.  The
agenda and so forth will be presented in the near future.

Hi all,

O-week is just around the corner and according to an email from the
sports union it's compulsory for us to have a stall (like that's
ever happened while I've been around.)
Anyway for those that don't know O-week will run from Wednesday
(3rd) to Friday middayish (5th), so it's more of an O-half-week.  We
will have a store for the whole of the half-week and also run a
promotional shoot at the square which I have booked (finger's
crossed) for Thursday morning.
O-weeks the most important time for the archery club because it's
where most of our funding comes from so we need as much help as we
can get.  So please keep the dates in mind, we'll be asking for
people to run the stall in the near future.

Hi All!

The new year has come, and the club will soon be operating for the
university year on the regular basis.

Currently, O-Week details are being worked out, and we will be
having our usual stall of course promoting the club and hopefully
signing up members to help boost our club activities this year.

The major event for this year will be the 2004 AUSEast Championships
for Archery, to be hosted by us at St Pauls oval.
We will be providing more information as it comes.

There are always other events on that members can enter and
participate in if interested.
Up coming events that our members will be involved with are the 2004
NSW State Target championships on the 14th and 15th Feb, the
Metropolitan Chamipionships on the 3rd and 4th April, and the 2004
Archery Australia National Championships from the 10th to the 17th
April, which will be held in Brisbane.

On other news, it has become a sad piece of news that I must
announce that our planned move to St Paul's Oval as a permanent move
is now indefinately placed on hold due to more storage problems.
In turn, as we are now back on the Square for training, there will
be a period of 8 weeks when our usual Tuesday training time will be
moved to accomodate for a double booking with St Andrews School.
More information will be provided on alternative training if
available when it comes.

Hope you all have a good remaining holiday before the University
year starts again.

Sydney University Archery Club

Hi All,

Today was the City of Sydney Championships, an annual event hosted by
the Sydney Bowmen club down in Coogee.  It is a fun event held in a
very casual manner, and a nice way to spend a sunday in the park
shooting.

The event was a Double Canberra (60m, 50m, 40m, 30 arrows each
distance, twice) and proved to be a challanging shoot as most events
including the standard FITA rounds are only 144 arrows, compared to
the 204 arrows (including practice ends) that was shot by most today.

We had 4 members of SUAC compete today, below are the results for all
except Malcom, who was unable to complete the event due to prior
commitments causing him to have to leave early.  I would post his
first round score but we didn't know what it was.

The competitors were divided into grades according to their best
previous scores from any recent competitions.

Alex Norman - Recurve Grade 1
1st round - 780/900
2nd round - 704/900
Total - 1484/1800
Placed 3rd in Recurve Grade 1

Dan Bray - Barebow Grade
1st round - 641/900
2nd round - 656/900 ( A new State Record! Congrats Dan)
Total - 1297/1800
Placed 1st in Barebow

1st round - 806/900
2nd round - 786/900
Total - 1592/1800
Placed 1st in Compound Grade 2

Overal Club Placing - Sydney Uni came in 5th overall out of 11 clubs
at the event.  This placing was determined by a points system, 3 for
a 1st, 2 for a 2nd and 1 for a 3rd, and the club with the highest
points won the trophy.  We did very well with only 3 archers.
Hopefully once we have more people competing next year (hopefully
Hamish, Lauren, Kirsten, James, Adrian, Guy in addition to us four
this year), we might get to win the trophy.

I'd highly recommend this event, it is lots of fun, and very friendly
people at Sydney Bowmen as well.

The next event to be of note will be the 2004 Australia Day event.

To all SUAC Members,

It is with great pleasure that we announce the 2004 Eastern
University Championships will be officially hosted by Sydney
University Archery Club at St Pauls Oval.

We have received the news that hosting rights and status has been
given to us for this event, which for the last three years have been
hosted by Newcastle University.  We are very pleased to be able to
take a lead, and hopefully provide a quality event that will showcase
the best archers that our universities have.

The competition will take place over two days, with two events being
shot.  The format is still being worked out, however as we are a
Archery Australia Affiliated club, we will be attempting to use
official rounds so that scores shot by affiliated members will be
recorded etc.

The dates are 5th and 6th of July, which is during the mid year
winter vacation, so it is a date to keep an eye out on for next year.

As always, we will provide up to date information as we get it.

Many thanks must go to our club secretary Alex Norman for his hard
work in the application process and communicating with the Sports
Union people to get this happening.

Exams are mainly over for this year, wishing you all a relaxing
summer holidays until next year.

For those who have nothing to do, we still shoot during the vacation
period on most sessions at the normal times and range fees.  If in
doubt, email me to confirm a few days before to make sure we are
shooting.

Sydney University Archery Club Championships 2003

The Club Champs were held on Sunday, at the Square with a mixed bag
of results and weather.
The turnout was a little lower than expected, however with exams so
close it was not a complete surprise, however those with exams who
came and shot were able to get their minds off and have a little fun
before the serious end of semester kicks in.

Weather was a mixed affair, with fine clear sunny weather to begin,
and a bout of winds, clouds, thunder, rain, hail and more strong
winds before the patch cleared for a sunny finish to the day, before
more rain set in.

Due to this change of conditions and weather,and the break in
shooting rounds from this interruptions, many of the scores were
lower than hoped, but still a good result.

In the Recurve division the results were: (Bracket numbers indicate
+/- change of scores since the July Geelong competition in the
University Tournament against other Uni's)

I only wish that Adrian and Guy worked in the Tax department, because
after two attempts of adding Adrian's scores, they still got it wrong

said differently).  So thus, Adrian still scored higher with a very
close margin than Kirsten.

The next events that will be reported will hopefully be the NSW State

Hi All,

Last Sunday (12/10/03) three members of the club competed in the State
Target competition at Homebush Archery Park.

The weather conditions were terrible with winds gusting upto 60km/hour.
Due to this, many scores from the day were lower than expected.

Alex Norman placed 8th in the Men's Recurve division.

Dan Bray once again won the Men's Barebow division by a margin of 217
points from second place.

Overall, the results were reasonable for the wind conditions.

Hi All,

As we near the midpoint of second semester, club activities have
settled into a regular routine quite well.  Club events are
progressing and looking good for the remainder of the year.

Range Fees

Thanks must go to everyone with their co-operation in paying their
range fees.
The small trickle is very important as over time, it has helped by us
purchase a order of 40 bowbags for our recurves.  Once these come in,
the days of carboard boxes falling apart with lost strings and limb
bolts will hopefully be a thing of the past.
Please continue to help support the club by remembering to pay the
fee when you come and shoot (except for those who have paid their
season fee).

Indoor Outdoor Competition
*********
The indoor outdoor competition is going ahead as planned.
We have a few entries, but if you would like to compete, then please
come on the day, and we will try to fit as many as possible.

When: Tuesday 30th September 2003 (The Tuesday of Usyd Midsemester
Break)
Time: 10:00am
Cost: $5 (Target faces and Range fee)
What: 18m distance, 40cm target face, 3x 30 arrows (10x 3 arrow
rounds)
Where:  The Square. (If we have relocated by then, we will have
someone there to redirect you)

We would like to have as many come if possible, and we will have our
regular tuesday session afterwards.  You don't have to pay any extra
range fees to continue shooting in the afternoon.

White Tail Targets

We have had our white tail targets for two months and they are
looking good.  So far our large capital investment has paid off
extremely well, and they look like to last for a while yet before we
will have to make any other major purchases target wise.
However, without the support from our chocolate sales, it would have
been a difficult thing to raise the funds for this purchase.
Hopefully next year, we may consider making smaller purchases to
increase our capacity slowly, and we would like the continual support
from members and friends for future ventures.

The club has paid for 12 positions of affiliation with Archery
NSW/Archery Australia.
Several positions have already been taken and filled.
It is intended that those who take advantage of this offer will
compete in a state/national competition some time in the upcoming
season before July 2004.
The club has subsidised $80 per position, so it is only $6 to take
one.  However, this means any competition fees will have to be paid
in full by yourselves.
The first competition is October 11.  If you feel that you would like
to compete and represent the club, please speak to Alex Norman at
training about this.

Coaching

A coach who has returned from surgery and rehab has expressed
interest in coaching our club members again in the near future.
We are very happy to accept this offer, however the financial cost
will make this offer a difficult process.
WE WILL NOT RAISE RANGE FEES
The range fee will remain $1 per shoot.
We will be negotiating with the Sports Union to have financial
support for this coaching.  If this is not viable, we may ask those
members who wish for coaching to voluntry contribute for the service.

The only other major event left in the club calender is the Club
Championships.

Hi Everyone,
Another beautiful day at Homebush yesterday for the State/National
ranking round. Dan and I arrived to a lovely cool, calm morning and
an insteresting target allocations sheet. Amongst the 10 archers in
my division (Men's Recurve) were two AIS archers, Rob Turner and
Andrew Lindsay (Andrew was on the World Champs team this year), and
Sydney Olympic Gold Medallist Simon Fairweather. Unfortunately Simon
didn't turn up though... Oh well :-)

Anyhow, apart from a bit of wind during the second distance the day
was very nice for shooting. Scores follow:

Dan Bray - Men's Recurve Barebow
70m - 207
60m - 227 (is that a competition pb Dan?)
50m - 196
30m - 279
Total Ladies FITA - 909

Alex Norman - Men's Recurve
90m - 278 (huge pb and 3rd highest from the day)
70m - 245 (a competition pb but crap when compared to my 90m score)
50m - 284 (again a competition pb. Could have been higher)
30m - 332 (outright pb. Happy with it, though could have been five
points higher:-)
Total Men's FITA - 1139 (massive pb of almost 200 points and one
point off a Master Bowman score).

So another great day at Homebush. Hopefully we will see more USyd
people competing in the near future.

Dear All,

The first week of Semester has started well, with a good turnout of
shooters, which many whom we haven't seen for quite a while.  We hope
those whose timetables now allow them to shoot more frequently will
do so, and those who only have a hour between classes will still come
and shoot, like dedicated Hamish =).

Please don't stay away due to the Range fee, because it isn't much
for the long term benefits.  Plenty of people have purchased the $20
semester pass, so thank you.

Below are the details for our upcoming Outdoor Indoor competition.
This competition will be a close range event, at 18m, on 40cm faces,
and the difference which will prove quite challenging to many is that
you each will have 3 targets to shoot at, in which each end, you only
shoot 1 arrow at each target face.  This is done to remove
probability of arrow damage at the close distance it is shot.  This
will mean that aiming skills at multiple heights on the target will
be required.  We will put out closer targets as the event nears for
practice

When: Tuesday 30th September (Unfortunately it has to be a weekday
because weekends are booked out for Cricket season) It is mid
semester break for Usyd, don't know about other Uni's
Time: 10am Registration til when we finish, or til 5pm when the
booking is over (shoot time as per club training session)
Where: The Square, University of Sydney
How much: $5/Entry (Includes range fee and target faces)
What: 3x AustIndoor 1 (30 arrows, 10 ends x 3 arrows, 18m, 40cm face
multispot)
Close of Registration date: 5th September

Chocolate Sales are still continuing.
James Shepherd has been hard at work selling these for us, in the
Access Labs, and currently has sold 4 boxes, being our highest
seller.  Thank you very much James =).  We would really really
appreciate it greatly if others could help out as much as possible by
selling them for us.  Please do come and talk with us about this, as
we only have another 6 boxes to sell.

This Saturday, we will be travelling to Campbelltown to pick up our
long awaited White Tail targets.
Fingers crossed that all goes well, and in the coming weeks these
targets will be placed into regular use as we phase out the Straw
target boards.

Lastly, but not less important is the issue of helping out.
It has been noticed by many of us, that there are members of the club
who turn up after everything is set up, shoot all afternoon, and
leave before we pack up.  They don't have any urgency for this,
except what seems to us, the lack of willingness to help set up, and
pack up each sessions.  Without naming names, we are very
dissapointed at this kind of behaviour, and we hope that in the
future this will change.
We do understand if you have classes to go to, or if you have real
reasons for leaving early, or arriving late, but if you don't, and we
find out, you probably will get some very interesting comments from
people who notice this.
Please help, and get involved, because it is as much as your club as
it is everyone elses, and as people graduate and leave university, it
is the responsibility of the younger members to carry it on, instead
of letting the club fall apart from what hard work has built it to.
So, if you are around before 2pm, come by and help set up, and if you
don't have to rush away at 5pm, stay and help pack up.
We appreciate those who help out very much.

Uni Competition Results

I'd like to thank everyone who came, and helped out to make the event
as big as a success as it was yesterday.
The weather cleared up for the shooting, and we had some light winds,
but overall it was a nice day.
I think people really enjoyed shooting at uni, a different scene,
especially while facing tennis courts and construction workers. I
think we managed to get some publicity, as several hundred people
passed the field during the day, and quite a large number stopped to
watch our shooting for a few rounds, and more came by to watch during
their lunch breaks.
Next year, the competition is most likely to be co-hosted with
Homebush Archery Park, and will be held out at the Olympic Archery
park. If we can make it a officially listed ANSW event, and Uni Games
event, or at least SU Sport endorsed, then we may get more numbers
competing.

We ran a lucky guess competition, where the number was between 0 -
1800, and it would be the average of all shooters at the end of the
day.
Alex Norman took out the prize with a guess of 1250 (the score he
wanted to shoot for a FITA?), with the average being 1227.

Hi Everyone,
The FITA World Archery Championsips begin in New York today. The WACs
occur every two years, and in years like this one (the year before an
Olympics) they also serve to gain countries qualifications to next
years Olympics. The WACs are a huge event with some 212 competitors
in Men's Recurve alone!
Each country can send a maximum of 4 competitors per division (Men's
& Women's Compound & Recurve). The competition takes the following
format:
All competitors shoot a FITA round (144 arrows at four different
distances) over two days. From the results of this seeding round the
top 64 (in the division) pass through to the individual sudden death
matchplay. The matches at this stage are 18 arrows only shot at 70m.
Certainly a very tough format. When there are only 8 archers left the
matches switch to 12 arrows only (imagine all your success as a
competitive archer riding on 12 arrows!! Heavy!). With four archers
left the two winners of the 12 arrow matches go to the Gold Medal
match. The two losers go to the Bronze arrow match. Like the previous
matches the title of World Champion rests on just 12 arrows.

There is also a team matchplay event, and this is the important one
for Olympic qualification. For more information on how countries

Australia has sent a full squad - 4 each of Men's and Women's
Compound and Recurve. We have a number of good chances at medals

It is with great pleasure that the Club Exec's and Committee informs
you all that our club is now officially Affiliated with Archery
Australia and Archery NSW.

I'd like to thank Alex Norman our secretary for all the hard work he
has put into this, and bringing our club one step closer to the
heights of Archery within Australia.

As is, there is only two university clubs within Australia that I
know of who are Affiliated, which is us and UNSW.  And hopefully our
shooters in the future will start to get the upper hand over UNSW and
show that USyd people know how to shoot too =)

We are now calling for serious nominations of Affiliation.
The club has a small amount of money to use for subsidising
affiliation membership.  Membership runs from July - July (financial
year) and enititles you to compete in State and National events held
anywhere in Australia (not including competition entry fees), and
covers you for insurance reasons at any affiliated club across
Australia (thus allowing you to shoot there if you are not a member).
Requirements to be a Affiliated member:  A "New" Club uniform (once
we get them in).  Willingness to compete at events and train on a
regular basis.
Nothing else is required as the club will continue to provide the
equipment to the best of its ability.
The cost of affiliation is estimated to be around $100 (not including
shirts).  We will subsidise accordingly depending on how many people
wish to seriously affiliate.

Range Fees Introduction

As voted at the SGM last week, a range fee will be charged for shoots.
This will start from the 29th July 2003.
The cost is $1/shoot ($2/shoot if you are non SUAC but AA/ANSW
affiliated).
A "season pass" of $20 can be purchased which will allow you shooting
for a semester block (28th July - 19th November 2003) including
semester break holidays, which will save you $14 if you shot each
Tuesday and Friday.  Holidays after exams and before semester starts
next year will be the $1/shoot.
This equals to $2/week, which is not even a bottle of coke.
The reason why we are using this system is to raise funds for
maintance of equipment and targets.
And we are still the cheapest affiliated club within Australia with
range fees and membership fees inclusive.
Please help us, and be honest by paying at each session when you get
your equipment.

Misc Stuff

Thanks once more to Alex Norman, the club secretary, and target
haggler, as we are now in the process of purchasing 4 ex-olympic foam
targets and H-frames from Camden Valley Archers.  These targets are
in excellent condition, and thanks to Alex's bargaining skills, we
have them at a price cheaper than 50% normal retail brand new.
We will be expecting them to be paid for and transported in the
coming few weeks.  These targets should last us a while, and are a
cheaper alternative in the long run with replaceable center inserts
at a reasonable price.

The competition is nearing, and we have 30 registered competitors for
the event at hand, with 18 from our club.  If you have nothing better
to do on the day (17th July) then feel free to pop down and watch
some shooting by hopefully the best that our club can offer, and see
how our university opposition holds up.

Hi All,

Unlike the usual situation of Alex sending us the weekend results, I
have decided to do so.

On Sunday, Dan Bray and Alex Norman travelled to the Blue Mountains
Indoor, at some unknown early hour in the freezing cold ( under 8
degrees) to have a crack at the 18m range.

The end results were

Alex Norman (Men's Recurve) - 6th with 506
Dan Bray (Men's Bare Bow) - 1st with 485

Overall results, Dan Bray came 5th and recieved a Dinner at the
Mercure Resort.

So congratulations on them both.

Onto Club matters.

As previous posted, we will have another Special General Meeting to
vote upon the final version which has been approved for Affiliation.
However, due to a financial stuff up by the sports union, we are yet
unsure of any subsidy for members wishing to Affiliate.
This matter is being sorted, and hopefully will be resolved in time
for affiliation.

Range fees will also be introduced and discussed.

The competition in July is coming near, and entries to put your name
down closes this friday, the 27th.  So, if you wish to come and you
have not given your details to me, then please see me on Tuesday, or
Friday this week, or email me with your name, SID and division
(Men's/Women's Compound/Recurve/Novice).
Cost will be $25 + Uniform (approximately $30) with a subsidy.  The
uniform will be club uniform from now on, and in the future you will
not be required to get new versions like in the past.  Besides, it is
a good shirt.  If you ignore comments about chaffing. =)

And lastly, Chocolate sales.
We have broken even with our sales, and covered the cost of the
chocolates.  We still have 10 boxes of chocolate left but the sales
have flagged quite considerably.  However, we do understand there are
exams and other things to do, but once they are over, we would
appreciate it greatly if people could help us sell more of them and
generate the money we badly need for equipment and targets.

Hi Everyone,
Unfortunately our application to affiliation with Archery Australia
has been knocked back on a constitutional issue. In order to
affiliate we will have to change our constitution again. I am calling
another SGM so that the Club can vote on these changes. It will be
held on Friday the 4th of July from 2:30pm in the Square. There will
also be some announcements regarding the introduction of range fees
and some general business.

The proposed changes are:
Clause 5: Changed to, "Any member of SU Sport completing the
prescribed membership form for the Club, and paying the membership
fee as set out by the Club Committee for that year, shall thereby
become a member of the Club."
Clauses 5.1 - 5.3: Deleted.
Clause 6: Changed to, "All members of the Club must be fully insured
and registered members of Archery Australia Incorporated, through its
State administrative body, the Archery Society of New South Wales
Incorporated (refer By Law 1)."

By Law 1 is to be created shortly. This will identify the SUAC Social
Club that most members will be a part of. It will effectivley state
that all members of SUAC must be registered with AA, through
ArcheryNSW, unless they are members of the Social Club (as most of
you are). The Social Club will in all other respects be the same as
SUAC - share grounds, equipment etc. Just the same as things are now.

Hi All,

Due to some complaints from people of other universities about the
inconvience of cost (and don't get me started on it because they are
complaining when previous Uni competitions were more expensive), the
schedules and costs for the event has changed.

REVISED DETAILS!

When: Thursday, 17th July ONLY
What:  Geelong AND Short Canberra, on the same day.
The day will start a little earlier (9am) to accomodate for both
events on the same day.
How Much: $25 for the whole day.

However, this change means there will be no medals, but instead paper
certificates, in order to keep the costs down.

In addition to this, on the Friday 18th July, because we have applied
to book the field, we will use it.
We will hold a informal Team Matchplay for SUAC members, using club
targets.
A team matchplay is where you form teams of three members, and you
shoot off against other teams.
We will be using a round robin points system before a elimination
ladder.
In order for this to actually work, it obviously requires enough
people to form teams of three.  So, if you don't want to pay $25 for
the competition, then come on the friday in the morning and shoot in
the team matchplay before regular training in the afternoon. =)

Please, please, please, come and shoot in the competition.  We, as
previously stated, will be subsidising, and quite frankly $25 for a
day's fun of shooting isn't much to pay at all.
You can register your name during archery shoots, or emailing your
name and student number, and division to me.

Hi All

The chocolates have been ordered, and will be delivered on Wednesday

Which means you can pick up a box on Friday to begin testing your
sales abilities.

Honeycomb Crisp

All boxes are $40.
We have 6 boxes of each type available to start off with, and if we
sell them and think we can sell more (which I think we could) then it
is easy to order more.
The Giant Caramello and Freddo are to be sold at $1/each and the Milk
Block and Honeycomb are sold at $2/each.

So far, Alex B will try to sell them at Vet, and James S will be
selling them at Fisher and other Access Labs he works at.
If you think you can sell some, then please come and help.

The proceedure is as follows.
1) You see me at archery on a Tuesday/Friday and tell me how many
boxes you want to take to sell (min 1, max whatever we have left).
2) You pay Kirsten (treasurer) the $40/box
3) You sell the chocolates
4) You keep the money.  Or any unsold chocolates.
5) If you honestly can not sell the remaining unsold chocolates,
return them in the box for a refund of the unsold items, otherwise,
just keep them and eat them to help out the club.  Unless of course
you are allergic to Chocolate.

Yes, it is a large outlay of $40/box, but you can sell a box at a
time if you can not afford more.

Today was a most spectacular day for shooting. The weather was pretty
much perfect. Again Dan and I went to Homebush and again it was
windless! Amazing seeing as the place has a reputation for its wind.
It was a big turnout, with more recurvers than compounders for a
change.

60m = 223
50m = 210
30m = 285
Total = 923

Alex Norman - Men's Recurve (Men's FITA):

30m = 317 (pb - with a miss on the last arrow!)

A great day. Scores were lowish all round. Hopefully we will see more
USyd archers there in the future. (can't wait to get my carbon
arrows!:-)

Hi All,

Time has come to order some chocolates for sale to raise club funds.

Two points.
1) When
2) How.

When.  We could order them now, but with exams it may be unlikely
people will buy, or more likely to buy so they can snack during
studies.  And they can be sold during the holidays.

How.  We are going to run with a system of outlay.  The club will
purchase the choclates at their cost price.  The selling person will
pay the club for a box at the profit cost, and proceed to recover
their money by selling.  This system has two advantages, that the
club will not have to run the risk of people not returning correct
monies after sold chocolates, and the club will gain the profit
immediately available for use.  The disadvantage is the selling
person will have to pay a large sum (eg $40/box) upfront to begin
selling.  Any unsold chocolates will be then available for the
selling person to eat themselves, and help with raising funds for the
club.

The minimum order for fundraising boxes are 12 boxes at $20/box.
After selling them at $40/box, the club will have $240 profit.  The
more boxes we can sell the better.

If you are one of the people who really want to help us by selling
choclates around uni, or other places, then please either email me
back with your name and contact details, or talk to me during archery
sessions.

In a apparent deliberate ommission of a name from my last newsletter
in regards to those I suggested to compete, my apologies.

She's a regular of the club now, and shoots very well.
I didn't deliberately forget, so please don't hurt me =)

In more serious matters.
The registration pack for the competition is being completed, and
will be available for reading during the shoots.
The final cost is $30/event, however depending on how many people
sign up by the 27th of June, there will be subsidy from the club to
help reduce the cost.

A uniform will be required as previously stated, and we will work on
getting the information about costs and availabilities soon.

Hi All,

An update on Club events and things to be aware of.

Firstly, due to the bad weather, we were not able to shoot on
Tuesday, even though through the many opinions of club members, the
field was dry enough to shoot on.  However, it was the groundsmen's
decision to not allow usage, and we respect it, but if it was the
Sports Union, and the grounds staff said it was ok, we would have
shot.  According to the weather forecasts, it should be clearing up
on Thursday, so fingers crossed the weather holds out for a clear day
so we can shoot on Friday.  But, if it does rain out again with the
field closed, then blame the weatherman.

The issue of Affiliation is at hand.  The documentation has been
handed to the people at Archery Australia, and the decision to vote
and accept Sydney University Archery as a affiliated AA Club will
happen on Saturday.  There isn't any real apparent reason why we will
not be voted in as a club, so we should be fine.  However, we require
to know how many people wish to affiliate as we need to organise
monies to pay for the affiliation membership once 1st July comes
around.  So, if you are interested, at all, then let us know as soon
as possible, or if you wish to discuss it, then talk to us (Don,
Alex, Dan) about it and we can help with any questions.  Depending on
how many people wish to affiliate will determine any kind of subsidy
for the affiliation costs.

Club Relocation is an issue which has been brought up by the Sports
Union people.  Due to OH&S we are to be relocated somewhere.  After a
meeting with Jim Larven, the CEO of AA, and chair of ANSW, it was
deemed that St Pauls oval was the safest choice, which would also
allow us to get long distance practice shooting on.  The sports union
has taken this to heart, and are attempting negotiations with St
Pauls college to allow us usage of the field, however there are
issues with storage.  At worse, we may have to carry equipment every
session from some other location to our allocated field, but with
helping hands in numbers it won't be as bad as it sounds.  And at
best case scenario is we get storage at the final field location.
Fingers crossed for a resolution soon.

Fundraising has grinded to a halt, as Cadbury's has not sent any
forms and information as requested by us, twice.  So if you are keen
about helping us fundraise, please call Cadbury's and request a
fundraising orderform and informations pack for us, and pass it onto
the club exec's.

The competition in July requires final numbers listing by this friday.
The dates at the 17th and 18th July.
If you can come to these dates, then please do come and compete.
We will attempt to subsidise the cost of the entry for our club
members, but the more people that compete, the cheaper it will be.
At this present point in time, we require a minimum of 25 entries to
keep it under $30/day.

The club's Humungo target has come in (the white foam target thing
with the multple circles on it), and once they figure out how to rig
it up with a rope and peg, it will be available for the compound and
better shooters to plug away at, which will possibly mean a
retirement of the Frankentarget, but that will be determined by our
President and Equipment officers.  We are still awaiting the delivery
of the Whitetail target which will hold the 122cm faces.

I don't think there is anything else at the moment, but any news
which effects club members will be of course relayed to you.

The Australian recurve team is now in France to compete in the 2nd
European Grand Prix. You can keep track of how they are doing at

In addition to the team are two AIS archers who are there to gain
international experience.

The team did very well in Croatia with four archers winning some
World Ranking Points, and David Barnes winning the Bronze medal.
Hopefully they can do it again this week.

30m/40m and 122cm face for 50m/60m)
How Much:  Should not be more than $30/day.  A discount will apply if

No food will be provided for the event.

So, the more people that come, the cheaper the entry will be!
It is a good opportunity to compete, especially the second day for
different distances to the usual 30m at training sessions.

Hello Club,
As you may be aware, the Club is going to become affiliated with
Archery Australia in July (hopefully:-). Given that we are just past
halfway through May, we need to start signing interested people up. I
must stress that joining is up to you. IE it is not compulsary. This
level of membership is what was voted for at the AGM as 'competitive
membership'. All it means is that you are affiliated with Archery
Australia. If you are just doing archery for fun and relaxation then
this is probably not for you.

Benefits of Joining:
- You get to shoot at other archery clubs in Australia or overseas.
- You get to shoot in Archery Australia competitions.
- You get access to a much higher level of coaching.
- You get to represent your Uni in competition.
- You are covered by Archery Australia Insurance wherever you shoot.
- You get to represent Australia at international events (if you are
good enough:-).
- You are helping Australia's Olympic Archery effort.

Cost: I am not sure of the cost for this year yet. Last year it was
$86. There has been talk of a $10 increase. It is probably safest to
assume that affiliation will cost $100. That is for membership to AA
from July 03 to July 04. The Club may or may not be providing a
subsidy (to be decided).

Hi All,

Another newsletter for the Sydney University Archery Club.

Reminders for this week.

We have a special AGM on Friday, 9th May to vote in two changes, one
is that all references to SUSU (Sydney Uni Sports Union) to be
changed to SU Sport, and to vote a female delegate to the sports
union.

A reminder for weather conditions.  Generally we shoot in almost all
weather except major rain conditions, however we may have orders from
the sports union to not use the field, for safety reasons (insurance
liability for people slipping) and for grounds reasons (tearing up
grass etc)  If this happens, please do not get upset at us, but
instead take your claims to the Sports Union directly. =)
Regardless of the weather, there should usually be someone at the
lockers to inform of such a change.


Updates on Club events.

We are in the process of purchasing a foam target.  The expected
arrival of the target is a fortnight to three weeks, so by the end of
may, a replacement for Frankentarget should be here.  However, since
Frankentarget hasn't completely fallen apart, we may still have to
use it until our secondary foam targets (PSE Humungo) are purchased.

Affiliation and the July competition is being organised, and is going
well.  More details as they emerge.

We are still awaiting from Cadbury's to send a order form pack so we
can start selling chocolates (slack people they are....)  So, fingers
crossed that it actually happens.

Logo Competition
The logo competition is now open.
The requirements are simple.
It has to include the SU Sport Logo (same as the SUSU logo).
Something simple enough that we can screen print if we wish to make
uniforms.
Something that represents the club, and the spirit of the people in
the club.
Submissions can either be handed in person to me (Don Chiou, White
Bandana guy with the Blue compound), or emailed to me at
don@...
Please keep the size to less than half A4 for paper submission or a
640x640 jpg/bmp for emailed submissions.
A prize is yet undetermined.
Closing date for this will be the 30th May 2003.
The entries will be judged by the committee and executives.

Alex Norman (Beard/Goatee, Blue Recurve shooter) plans to make a
purchase of items from www.altservices.co.uk in about a fortnight.

Hi Everyone,
For those interested, the Australian recurve team have just flown to
Croatia to take part in the first leg of the European Archery Grand
Prix. This event is a World Rankings Tournament. Points are awarded
according to where you place that contribute towards your roling
World Ranking. However, of even greater importance is that this is a
pre-Olympic year AND World Championship year. The Grand Prix, and
other international events like it, are used as warm-up events for
international teams before the World Champ's. Being a pre-Olympic
year is significant because at the World Champ's, countries, through
the placings of their archers, gain coveted entry spots to next
year's Olympics. Each country is entitled to only three places for
men and three places for women. However, there are only 64 places in
total for each, and many countries often miss out on fielding a full
strength team. Fielding a full strength team means that the country
is able to participate in the 'Teams Event' at the Olympics, so its
doubly important.

Australia has a good chance of gaining at least two spots for the
men, and probably two spots for the women. We also have a second
chace to get any remaining spots at next year's Oceania Championships.

Look out for Australia's David Barnes, currently ranked 11th in the
World (at 17 years of age!!), Jade Beatty, and Tim Cudihy + others.
Also look out for such archery greats as Michelle Frangilli (best all
round male recurve archer in the world at present in my opinion),
Lionel Torres (former World Champ), Natalia Valeeva, + others.
