End of Semester Edition
********************
1. StuVac Training
2. Uni Games
3. St Pauls Report Update
4. Affiliation
********************

1. StVac Training

It is the end of the semester, and StuVac begins next Tuesday.

The club will still operate in StuVac and exam period.

If you want to take a break from study, then please come on down to
the oval and have a shoot.

This is highly advised, and it is a great way to relax, and just get
your mind off a rather potentially stressful time at uni.

For those who are entering Uni Games, it is highly advised to come
and do some final training for the Uni Games, as it is only 3 weeks
away on the 5th and 6th July.

2. Uni Games

Training is still on, as stated in point 1.
Please come if you can as there are normally no more classes (for
most undergrad courses anyway) during StuVac period.

Anyone who is going to use Club arrows, and do not have a set
already assigned to them, must let us know, and come to training
before the Uni Games so we can allocate you one, and you can
practice a little with them before the competition. If we don't
have enough, we can make up a set for you quickly.

The quote for the shirts are in, and in order to pay for them, I
have already sent an email regarding payment.
Please pay by next friday as stated in the email.
Otherwise we may not get the shirts in time!

Those who are not entering the Uni Games, but don't have anything
better to do, and or are around Uni on the 5th and 6th July, please
feel welcome to drop by and cheer on your fellow archers.

3. St Pauls Report Update.

Our move to St Pauls is almost complete.
After Exams, we should have our new storage cabinets so that the
rest of our club equipment will be completely stored at St Pauls
Oval.

Once this is complete, we won't be requiring to move our gear back
and forwards from The Square storage area. We will be most likely
moving the gear in one go during a training session, so please be on
the look out for another email regarding this move. All the help to
get the gear moved would be much appreciated.

4. Affiliation

As stated during the AGM, we will be fielding positions of
affiliation for Archery Australia/Archery NSW.

Please email me, or tell me during training if you are wishing to
affiliate.

Conditions of affiliation are that you will attend at least two
events in the next 12 months that the affiliation covers:

The City of Sydney Championships(5th December 2004)
and the
2005 State Target Championships (Date unknown, 2005).

Both these events are very fun and friendly, and those who are
competing at Uni Games will already have uniforms. If you
affiliate, you will also require a uniform to compete in.

We will be subsiding Affiliation costs and uniforms (how much
depends on the numbers).

*************

1. Wet Weather

As the wet season approaches, it must be said that weather
controlling is currently beyond our club control. This said, if the
weather conditions are of definite rain, then there will not be any
shoot held.

However, if the weather clears up by the afternoon around 1:30pm and
looks to remain clear for the rest of the afternoon, the shoot may
still be on. Please do come by if that is the case as we may be
shooting.

As much as we have shot in the wet before, it is within our best
interest of club equipment and the health of our members to not be
shooting in the rain.

The only execptions to this is during competitions such as the
AUSEast Archery Championships as they can not be rescheduled due to
weather.

2. AUSEast 2004 Archery Championships

Official entries are now required.

If you would like to enter, please email me, or talk to me at
training.

I require:

Student ID
If you would like to participate in the Matchplay event.

The matchplay event is a informal shoot at 50m, team/individual is
to be determined on the day.

The cost is $38.50 for the two days, but the club will be subsiding
this. You do not need to pay this before the competition. Money
will be collected after the event.

Entries must be in to me by the 11th June!
Anyone wishing to enter after this date will incur a $11 late fee.

3. Coaching

As previous stated, our club coach will hopefully be making an
appearance on Friday.

Margaret will be concentrating on those who are competing at the Uni
Games.
Those wishing to have her help with their shooting etc, should come
along and also sign up for the uni games.

4. Uniforms

All the older members of the club who have competed will not require
uniforms for the uni games.

New members will require a uniform shirt.
The club still has some old stock available for $35/shirt
Sizes are M and L and XL (from memory).

We are currently in the quote phase for new shirts. If the time
does not permit new shirts, then existing SUSport shirts can be
purchased.

Brought to you by our Chocolate Top Seller, Alex Brueckner, from Vet
who is now onto her 3rd box of chocolates!

In this edition

*********
1. Chocolate Sales Progress
2. St Pauls Oval Report
3. AUS East Archery Championships
4. Club Coaching
*********

1. Chocolate Sales Progress

So far, a good portion of the chocolates have been distributed and
sold. Thankfully we have made our minimum quota of 12 boxes so the
club is not at a loss from the purchase of the chocolates. We still
have 11 boxes available for selling.

If you are one of the people who voted on the matter earlier with
the response of "yes, I will/would help sell them" during the poll,
and haven't, then please come and talk to us! As it is, we may be
using unsold chocolates as prizes in competition later.

Our intent with the profit from the chocolate sales will be to go
towards a metal detector, a proper measuring tape (out to 100m
instead of the 30m tape we have now) and also more bow purchases.

This can not happen unless we sell all of the chocolates!
Please help if you can.

2. St Pauls Oval Report

Progress of the St Pauls Oval move has been very good. The
transition has gone relatively smooth with some small bumps along
the way. Our biggest problem of double booking with Moore College
has been resolved as Moore College are now playing on No. 2 Oval.

Storage is on it's way to being resolved, and soon all of the club
equipment will be stored competely at St Pauls.

The turnout at St Pauls has been slightly lower than previously at
the Square, but please do not be discouraged by the location. It is
a wonderful location for shooting, great scenery, and interruption
free. Still not too far from either Wentworth or Ralphs Cafe. We
would love to see any member who has joined and not shot come and
make use of their membership, and those who haven't turned up since
the move.

Archery is wonderful especially during the season close to exams for
stress relief. Make use of it!

3. AUS East Archery Championships

The Sydney University Archery Club is hosting the 2004 AUS East
Archery Championships on the 5th and 6th of July.

This is the FIRST Monday and Tuesday of the Winter break.
This means that anyone who wants to compete can have a full holiday
after the event, and not have any interruptions.

People that the club is expecting to attend (due to their membership
and regular turning up) are:
[In alphbetical order]

Adrian *
Anna-Marie *
Alex *
Caroline *
Dan *
Danya *
Dennis
Don *
Gerard *
Hamish *
Jason
Jenny
Jesse
John-Paul
Jonathan
Kirsten *
Pilar
Robert *
Stewart
Tim

* notates that they do not require a uniform.
Uniforms will be discussed closer to the event.

Entry will cost $40 for the two days. This will be subsidied by the
club, but it is yet unknown how much.

If you are not coming, I would like to know the reason :)

It is a fantastic opportunity, especially for the novices, to shoot
in a real competition setting, and win some prizes, medals and
certificates. Please give it serious thought, and email me at

flehrad@...

and let me know if you are going to come or not.

4. Club Coaching

Margaret Nelson, will be coming to the club for a first coaching
session on the 28th May (not this friday but next Friday). If you
would like to have some critical assesment and help to assist your
shooting, please come during that session. Margaret is a National
Accredited Coach in Archery and has a excellent personal shooting
record as proof her coaching works.

She will be primarily looking at those who are going to compete at
the Uni Games on the 5th and 6th of July.

Any questions?

Hi All,

In this edition:

**********
1. St Pauls Oval
2. Chocolate Sales
3. Nudie 900
**********

1. St Pauls Oval.

Unfortunately on Tuesday this week, we were not able to shoot during
our regular shoot due to a red tape problem.
St Pauls is currently booked by Moore College for their internal
college touch football competition.

We have spoken to the Sports Union to resolve the matter, and we
hopefully will have a solution (where Moore College moves to the
Square) by Tuesday next week.

Depending on when we receive the updated information, please still
come to the tuesday session as normal, and hopefully we will be
there shooting.

My apologies for not being able to inform people appriopriately.

2. Chocolate Sales

The chocolates have arrived.

People who wish to help sell the chocolates, please let me know
before hand if possible, otherwise there will be a few boxes
available on Fridays to sell.

Jenny from the club is our first seller and she will be collecting
hers tomorrow.

Please do help out. You can try selling them in lectures,
tutorials, before and after pracs and labs, on the bus, train
station, local shops or to other friends that you have.

We have 24 boxes, but if we sell them we can order more.

I am happy to provde mixed boxes of chocolates (containing Freddo,
Caramellos and Dairy milk blocks) for people.

They will cost you $40/box, and all money you earn from selling is
yours to keep (so if you think you can sell them for more than the
RRP, go ahead).

I will have 3 boxes available this Friday (30th April).

3. Nudie 900

Those who are affiliated, and wish to shoot in the Nudie 900, please
give your name to Rob Talbot before the 7th of May along with the
entry fee of $25.

The event is a FITA900 or Canberra.
60m 30 arrows
50m 30 arrows
40m 30 arrows.
As it is a FITA registered event, you can also claim stars/badges if
you score certain thresholds.

The event will be hosted at Homebush Archery Park on the 15th May
(which is a Saturday).

See Rob if you are interested.

See you all on the range.

Dear Members,

As discussed previously, we will be running a chocolate fundraising
drive.

We have ordered our chocolates from Cadbury Fundraising, and
hopefully they will be delivered sometime next week ready for
selling.

This year we will have 4 varieties in these quantities.
Giant Freddo Frogs : 7 Boxes
Giant Caramello Koalas: 7 Boxes
Diary Milk Honeycomb Crisp blocks: 7 Boxes
Diary Milk Plain blocks: 3 Boxes
Total : 24 Boxes.

After the 24 boxes are sold, we will have a profit of $480 for the
club.

If you are interested in helping us sell them, it is as easy as
buying a box off us for $40, and selling them in your own time at
your own pace. They are great sellers in class, before and after
lectures and tutes too.
Otherwise you can eat a entire box of chocolates without feeling
guilty because you are helping the club fundraise.

For those who wish a mixed box of goodies, we can arrange that as
long as the contents of each box comes to $40.

Please let me know either via email or in person of your interest to
sell these chocolates.

If we manage to sell the 24 boxes and there is still a demand, we
can easily order more.

Special Novices Competition Edition!

As most of you would have known, we held our Novices Competition
last Friday during the normal training session due to the
complications of our move to St Pauls and weekend usage of the field.

The participants proceeded to shoot 15 rounds of 4 arrows at the 20m
distance targets.

The official scores (Sorry, don't know all surnames, so first name
basis only)

1st Place: Tim, scoring 504/600
2nd Place: Pili, scoring 473/600
3rd Place: Jason, scoring 464/600
4th Place: Dennis, scoring 351/600
5th Place: Stewart, scoring 342/600
6th Place: Jenny , scoring 322/600

It's great to see people shooting well with only a short time of
practice, especially with everyone scoring over 300 from 600.

Keep up the good work everyone! =)

As the AUS East games approaches, we will be introducing some
further distances to be shot, especially for the novices to have
some experience in them so that they will not be completely dazed at
shooting the longer distances.

(Adrian, learn to read your handwriting..... =P )

Dear All,

I have written this addum as I also forgot to place in Rob Talbots
placing for the clout event.

Rob Talbot
Clout Event:
Round 1: 100
Round 2: 199
Total: 299
Place: 3rd

Congrats also to Rob for placing 3rd.

As a side comment, Both Rob and Dan had never shot clout before
entering the event as late entries for the Nationals. The fact that
they managed to come 3rd and 1st respectively shows the amazing
depth of shooting skill they possess.

Hopefully we will have many more of our members affiliate this year,
and shoot in some more events.

1. 57th National Australian Archery Championships Results

Last week, four of the club's archers travelled up to Brisbane for
the week to participate in the Australian Nationals.

The event calender was very packed, with shooting happening for
eight days straight for some, while others took breaks in other
events.

Overall, the entire effort from Sydney Uni Archery was excellent,
and we have received many comments of praise on our shooting efforts
and how our club members have handled themselves at their first
Nationals, so many congratulations on the success of the trip.

Target Event:
Day 1: 1150/1440

FITA Round: 190/360
Total: 429
Place: 4th

Clout Event:
Round 1: 277
Round 2: 260
Total: 537
Place: 1st

Congratulations must go to Dan Bray for winning both the Target and
Clout events. He is now the current reigning Australian Champion
for Men's Barebow Recurve in those two events. Further more, Dan
has also broken the Australian Clout record with his 537 points, and
so in one week, Dan has come from a almost complete unknown to an
Australian Champion and record holder! Go Dan!

Although the numbers and placings do not look very impressive, the
efforts put in were. Many personal bests and personal records have
been made over the week, and hopefully they will be benchmarks for
improving their own shooting for the next competition and next
year's Nationals.

2. Club Training Grounds Reminder

A small reminder that we have moved to St Pauls Oval for our
training. The training times have stayed the same, but you will
have to meet at the club lockers at the Square to get your bow at
the start of the session if you can, otherwise you will have to use
whatever bow is brought up for you. The same will apply for
arrows. Unfortunately, this will be the routine until we have
storage problems completely sorted.

3. Range Fee Reminder.

For those who have paid with $8 membership for the year, range fees
of $1 per shoot now apply. If you wish to upgrade your membership
to the $15/semester with no range fees, then please see our
Treasurer Kirsten during training to pay the remainding $7 for this
semester.

That concludes this edition of the SUAC newsletter.
In the next edition, hopefully will be the official results of the
Novices Competition held last week, along with perhaps some news of
Chocolate Sales for Fundraising.

Hi All,

Another issue of our club newsletter brought to you by our club
sponsors, Carter Enterprises and Benson Archery Warehouse.

In this issue:

1. Relocation Status to St Pauls Oval
2. Novices Competition
3. AGM results

******

1. Relocation Status to St Pauls Oval

Many thanks must go to those who helped out today in the move to St
Pauls Oval, along with the grounds staff and their Gators. It was a
relatively quick and painless (moreso the mental than physical for
some people rolling the targets up to St Pauls oval...) process, and
the club is truely thankful for those who are willing to help out.

As a result, now all of our targets are at the St Pauls storage
shed. The bows and arrows are still at the Arena. We are still
working on a solution regarding the bows and arrows. We will update
when things occur.

All events and shooting will now happen at St Pauls Oval at the same
training times as before. However, if you can come at 2pm or just
before to the club lockers, it means we can pack your bow and arrows
to take up, otherwise you will have to do with what we have brought
up. Once the rest of the shed has been fixed to take our gear, it
will all move up to St Pauls.

2. Novices Competition.

The Novices competition will go ahead, but instead will be held
during a Friday afternoon session.

When?: 16th April 2004 (The last friday of Easter break)
Time?: 2pm
What?: 20m competition.
Where?: St Pauls Oval

Our Vice President, Adrian will be running the event, as I will be
in Brisbane competing at the Australian Nationals along with Alex,
Dan and Rob.

Please help out with the setup and getting the equipment from the
club lockers. Meet at the club lockers to get your bows, arrows and
other items before going to St Pauls.

3. AGM Results.

As of the results of the AGM, the new 2004 Exec for the club are.

President: Donald Chiou
Vice President: Adrian Tchen
Secretary: Robert Talbot
Treasurer: Kirsten O'Hara
Equipment Officer: Julian Cole
Publicity Officer: Gerard O'Connor
Field Captain: Daniel Bray
Committee: Hamish Hill
Committee: Jade Wei
Committee: Huan-Chen Zhang

Other items on the agenda were also discussed regarding
competitions, the university games, fundraising and equipment
purchases. The minutes will soon be available for those interested.

As a end note, there will not be any official shooting on Good
Friday, however there should be normal sessions next tuesday and the
novices competition next friday.

I hope you all have a good break, and we will see you all after the
holidays.

Dear All,

This is a special edition of the Sydney University Archery Club
Newsletter.

1. AGM
2. Move to St Pauls Oval
*******

1. AGM

This coming friday, the club will be holding the AGM inside the
Arena Sports Centre. It will take place at 2pm, and will be held in
one of the meeting rooms. Please come. We require a corum before
we can start.

The basic Agenda will be:

Voting of new Executive
St Pauls Move
Affiliation
AUSEast
Competitions
Equipment
General Business

After the AGM is over, we then will be able to do some shooting.

2. St Pauls Move

As of today, we have received official notification
that "effectively from the 6th of April, all training will be at St
Pauls Oval".
For the moment, we are still in limbo regarding the transportation
of equipment and targets. Our targets will be stored at St Pauls
oval first for space and environmental reasons while the rest of the
equipment is to be stored at the Arena. We will detail the
proceedures during the AGM, and send out an additional notice later.
Please be patient as we undertake this move. It is a very big step
for the club, and we hope that you can all still come and shoot and
have fun at St Pauls.

The move, though initiated by the club for developmental reasons has
been escalated too quickly for us and the Sports Union (thus the
unfinished storage arrangements) due to Security and Risk Management
sticking their noses into the works without researching us first.
So until it is sorted, please come and help out with the club needs.

As part of preparations for our Novices to the more fun competitive
side of things, such as the University Games in July, we are hoping
to hold a Novices Competition on the last Saturday of Easter Break,
the 17th April at the Square (Where you shoot right now). But, to
make this viable, we need a good turnout, so all of you can have
fun, meet other archers, and get some experience on how competitions
happen. We will be holding the competition at 20m, the number of
arrows shot will be decided later. The cost will be $5 for the day
(no food included). A certificate will be presented to the winners,
and if we are lucky, we might even have a prize. If we are lucky.
Please make sure you read the Polls section in 4.

3. Fundraising

One of our requirements for the club as an agreement with the
SUSport management who provide our funding is we must raise a
minimum of 25% of our own expenditure. Due to this, we always try
to get some fundraising happening. Last year, we successfully sold
24 boxes of Cadbury Freddo, Caramello and Dairy/Honeycomb blocks,
with a profit of $480. This work was mainly done by 4 people in the
club, and it was very hard work, and slightly dissapointing that
more people did not help more. I am not saying others did not help,
because plenty of people did help by buying chocolate, but not many
took boxes away to sell for the club.
Please read on the Polls section in 4.

We may be doing chocolate sales again this year, if we are, we would
love all of you to help us with our fundraising.
If you have other ideas on how to run a successful fundraising
venture, please tell us, or tell everyone at the AGM.

4. Polls

On the Sydneyuniarchery groups site, is a section called Polls.
This link will bring you to where the club polls are held for
opinions.
Currently, there are two polls.
One poll regarding fundraising, one regarding the Novices
Competition.
Please vote.
This will give us a good indication on if the Novices Competition
will happen, and if we will sell chocolates again this year.

The votes will close on the 31st of March for the Novices
Competition, as we will need time to organise with UNSW and the
Arena staff for the field booking.

Welcome to all of our newest club members!

All at the club hope that you will enjoy archery as much as we do
and stick around to see the club progress.

************
1. New Member Proceedures
2. AGM
************

1.
As it is the start of the year, and we will be having a lot of our
new members out at the Square for the first time, I would like to
outline the normal proceedures so you all know what to expect.

Please have patience with us as our equipment resources are limited,
but we hope that all of you will be able to have the opportunity to
shoot.

Upon arrival at the Square, please ask around to see who is in
charge. This person will be different depending on the day and what
classes may be on. They will hopefully check off your name on our
membership list. Please check that the details (SID, Name and
Email) are correct on this list.

You will be then given, or directed to a bow and a small set of
arrows. Instructions for putting the bow together, along with
safety rules and how to shoot will then be taught to you.

As it can take a while to sort out the equipment and teach, we
unfortunately will have to stop teaching new members this after
4:30pm on each session as we have to pack up and stop at 5:00pm.

When you have finished shooting, please ask what to do with the
equipment before doing anything. You may be asked to pack the bow
away, or leave it for someone who is waiting to use it.

We all hope that you will be able to have fun and meet some new
people who also are interested in Archery.

2.
On other news, our club Annual General Meeting will be held on the
2nd April, 2004. This is a Friday at 2pm, and the meeting room
inside the Arena has been booked. During the AGM, election of
Office Bearers will be done before the agenda for the year discussed.
Positions on the Exec are:

President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Equipment Officer
Publicity Officer
Field Captain
Committee Member (x3)

If you would like to get involved in the club and how it is run,
then please come along and nominate for a position, and vote.

The Agenda will cover Range Fees, Affiliation, Competitions,
University Games, Purchases, and any other general business.

Once again, welcome to the club.

Hi All,

Sorry for such a late notice email, but we have been trying to work
out what will be happening with the O-Week stall this year.

O-Week Starts tomorrow, 3rd of March and will conclude on Friday,
5th March. The stall location is yet unknown to us, but please do
look for us on the maps.

We would like as many of you to join up again this year, and for
some of the regulars to come to the stall and help us out, so people
aren't stuck there for the entire day without having breaks and
being able to go off and get timetables and join other clubs etc.
So, those of you who know what it's like at the O-Week stall, please
do come and help again this year.

Prices for membership has changed this year.
Due to a funding cut (again....) from the Sports Union, we have
decided to have a permanent range fee tier system.

For All members, the cost of joining us this year is one of two
options.

a) $8 membership + $1/shoot range fee starting from the 5th April.
This gives new members a 3 week window to try it before they decided
to pay for range fees and continual shooting.

b) $15 membership for the entire semester. No range fees. This
will save $18 for the semester ($8 membership + 26 shoots at $1 each
shoot).

Second semester will be $15, as option, and for new members, it will
be $8 +range fee immediately, or $15.

For those who think this is very pricey, please allow me to remind
you that at $30 a year, we are by far still the cheapest Archery
Club in NSW, perhaps all of Australia. The UNSW archery club
charges $4/shoot in range fees flat. You can't even shoot a entire
semester for under our yearly price.

So, please do come by, join up again for another year of shooting.
We will be having another Novices competition, this time Official
University Games, Perhaps another Outdoor Indoor, and also our
yearly Club Championships. Plenty to get involved with.

Our AGM will be held on the 2nd of April during the start of our
usual shooting session. Please come and vote for the 2004 Exec, and
participate in our discussions for what is happening this year. The
agenda and so forth will be presented in the near future.

Thank you
Have a great O-Week Adventure!

Hi all,

O-week is just around the corner and according to an email from the
sports union it's compulsory for us to have a stall (like that's
ever happened while I've been around.)
Anyway for those that don't know O-week will run from Wednesday
(3rd) to Friday middayish (5th), so it's more of an O-half-week. We
will have a store for the whole of the half-week and also run a
promotional shoot at the square which I have booked (finger's
crossed) for Thursday morning.
O-weeks the most important time for the archery club because it's
where most of our funding comes from so we need as much help as we
can get. So please keep the dates in mind, we'll be asking for
people to run the stall in the near future.

Cheers
Adrian

Hi All!

The new year has come, and the club will soon be operating for the
university year on the regular basis.

Currently, O-Week details are being worked out, and we will be
having our usual stall of course promoting the club and hopefully
signing up members to help boost our club activities this year.

The major event for this year will be the 2004 AUSEast Championships
for Archery, to be hosted by us at St Pauls oval.
We will be providing more information as it comes.

There are always other events on that members can enter and
participate in if interested.
Up coming events that our members will be involved with are the 2004
NSW State Target championships on the 14th and 15th Feb, the
Metropolitan Chamipionships on the 3rd and 4th April, and the 2004
Archery Australia National Championships from the 10th to the 17th
April, which will be held in Brisbane.

On other news, it has become a sad piece of news that I must
announce that our planned move to St Paul's Oval as a permanent move
is now indefinately placed on hold due to more storage problems.
In turn, as we are now back on the Square for training, there will
be a period of 8 weeks when our usual Tuesday training time will be
moved to accomodate for a double booking with St Andrews School.
More information will be provided on alternative training if
available when it comes.

Hope you all have a good remaining holiday before the University
year starts again.

Hi All,

Today was the City of Sydney Championships, an annual event hosted by
the Sydney Bowmen club down in Coogee. It is a fun event held in a
very casual manner, and a nice way to spend a sunday in the park
shooting.

The event was a Double Canberra (60m, 50m, 40m, 30 arrows each
distance, twice) and proved to be a challanging shoot as most events
including the standard FITA rounds are only 144 arrows, compared to
the 204 arrows (including practice ends) that was shot by most today.

We had 4 members of SUAC compete today, below are the results for all
except Malcom, who was unable to complete the event due to prior
commitments causing him to have to leave early. I would post his
first round score but we didn't know what it was.

The competitors were divided into grades according to their best
previous scores from any recent competitions.

Alex Norman - Recurve Grade 1
1st round - 780/900
2nd round - 704/900
Total - 1484/1800
Placed 3rd in Recurve Grade 1

Dan Bray - Barebow Grade
1st round - 641/900
2nd round - 656/900 ( A new State Record! Congrats Dan)
Total - 1297/1800
Placed 1st in Barebow

Don Chiou - Compound Grade 2
1st round - 806/900
2nd round - 786/900
Total - 1592/1800
Placed 1st in Compound Grade 2

Overal Club Placing - Sydney Uni came in 5th overall out of 11 clubs
at the event. This placing was determined by a points system, 3 for
a 1st, 2 for a 2nd and 1 for a 3rd, and the club with the highest
points won the trophy. We did very well with only 3 archers.
Hopefully once we have more people competing next year (hopefully
Hamish, Lauren, Kirsten, James, Adrian, Guy in addition to us four
this year), we might get to win the trophy.

I'd highly recommend this event, it is lots of fun, and very friendly
people at Sydney Bowmen as well.

The next event to be of note will be the 2004 Australia Day event.

To all SUAC Members,

It is with great pleasure that we announce the 2004 Eastern
University Championships will be officially hosted by Sydney
University Archery Club at St Pauls Oval.

We have received the news that hosting rights and status has been
given to us for this event, which for the last three years have been
hosted by Newcastle University. We are very pleased to be able to
take a lead, and hopefully provide a quality event that will showcase
the best archers that our universities have.

The competition will take place over two days, with two events being
shot. The format is still being worked out, however as we are a
Archery Australia Affiliated club, we will be attempting to use
official rounds so that scores shot by affiliated members will be
recorded etc.

The dates are 5th and 6th of July, which is during the mid year
winter vacation, so it is a date to keep an eye out on for next year.

As always, we will provide up to date information as we get it.

Many thanks must go to our club secretary Alex Norman for his hard
work in the application process and communicating with the Sports
Union people to get this happening.

Exams are mainly over for this year, wishing you all a relaxing
summer holidays until next year.

For those who have nothing to do, we still shoot during the vacation
period on most sessions at the normal times and range fees. If in
doubt, email me to confirm a few days before to make sure we are
shooting.

*************************************************
Sydney University Archery Club Championships 2003
*************************************************

The Club Champs were held on Sunday, at the Square with a mixed bag
of results and weather.
The turnout was a little lower than expected, however with exams so
close it was not a complete surprise, however those with exams who
came and shot were able to get their minds off and have a little fun
before the serious end of semester kicks in.

Weather was a mixed affair, with fine clear sunny weather to begin,
and a bout of winds, clouds, thunder, rain, hail and more strong
winds before the patch cleared for a sunny finish to the day, before
more rain set in.

Due to this change of conditions and weather, and the break in
shooting rounds from this interruptions, many of the scores were
lower than hoped, but still a good result.

In the Recurve division the results were: (Bracket numbers indicate
+/- change of scores since the July Geelong competition in the
University Tournament against other Uni's)
Alex Norman 822/900 (-15)
Dan Bray 806/900 (+44)
Hamish Hill 793/900 (+109)
Malcom Barry 536/900
Lauren Bernauer 343/900 DNF

An excellent effort especially to Dan and Hamish with their large
score increases over the short period of time.

The Compound division results were:(Bracket numbers indicate +/-
change of scores since the July Geelong competition in the University
Tournament against other Uni's)
Donald Chiou 873/900 (-2)
Adrian Tchen 833/900 (-22)
Kirsten O'Hara 830/900 (-8)
James Shepherd 734/900 (-40)
Guy Kabos 525/900 DNF

I only wish that Adrian and Guy worked in the Tax department, because
after two attempts of adding Adrian's scores, they still got it wrong
(They scored it to be 827, but MS Excel and my trusty hand calculator
said differently). So thus, Adrian still scored higher with a very
close margin than Kirsten.

Many thanks must go to Ms Michelle Davidson from Carter Enterprises,
makers of precision release aids, in Idaho USA for their donation of
a prize and support of our club. Please take a look at their very
cool range of products at http://www.carterenterprises.com

The next events that will be reported will hopefully be the NSW State
Ranking round on the 22nd November, then the City of Sydney event on
the 7th December.

This concludes the "official" events of the club for this year, and
it was a very successful year, so many thanks to the competitors and
those who came and helped out in everything.

Good luck and well wishes for everyone with Exams!

Hi All,

Last Sunday (12/10/03) three members of the club competed in the State
Target competition at Homebush Archery Park.

The weather conditions were terrible with winds gusting upto 60km/hour.
Due to this, many scores from the day were lower than expected.

Alex Norman placed 8th in the Men's Recurve division.
90m 212
70m 231
50m 242
30m 296
Total score 981/1440

Dan Bray once again won the Men's Barebow division by a margin of 217
points from second place.
70m 204
60m 254
50m 198
30m 292
Total score 948/1440

Don Chiou placed 10th in the Men's Compound division.
90m 264
70m 251
50m 281
30m 327
Total score 1123/1440

Overall, the results were reasonable for the wind conditions.

Congratulations to Dan for continuing his placings in the barebow
division.

The Club Championships will be held soon, before exams as a last
competition for the year. More details when the event is finalised.

Hi All,

As we near the midpoint of second semester, club activities have
settled into a regular routine quite well. Club events are
progressing and looking good for the remainder of the year.

*********
Range Fees
*********
Thanks must go to everyone with their co-operation in paying their
range fees.
The small trickle is very important as over time, it has helped by us
purchase a order of 40 bowbags for our recurves. Once these come in,
the days of carboard boxes falling apart with lost strings and limb
bolts will hopefully be a thing of the past.
Please continue to help support the club by remembering to pay the
fee when you come and shoot (except for those who have paid their
season fee).

*********
Indoor Outdoor Competition
*********
The indoor outdoor competition is going ahead as planned.
We have a few entries, but if you would like to compete, then please
come on the day, and we will try to fit as many as possible.

When: Tuesday 30th September 2003 (The Tuesday of Usyd Midsemester
Break)
Time: 10:00am
Cost: $5 (Target faces and Range fee)
What: 18m distance, 40cm target face, 3x 30 arrows (10x 3 arrow
rounds)
Where: The Square. (If we have relocated by then, we will have
someone there to redirect you)

We would like to have as many come if possible, and we will have our
regular tuesday session afterwards. You don't have to pay any extra
range fees to continue shooting in the afternoon.

********
White Tail Targets
********
We have had our white tail targets for two months and they are
looking good. So far our large capital investment has paid off
extremely well, and they look like to last for a while yet before we
will have to make any other major purchases target wise.
However, without the support from our chocolate sales, it would have
been a difficult thing to raise the funds for this purchase.
Hopefully next year, we may consider making smaller purchases to
increase our capacity slowly, and we would like the continual support
from members and friends for future ventures.

*******
Affiliation
*******
The club has paid for 12 positions of affiliation with Archery
NSW/Archery Australia.
Several positions have already been taken and filled.
It is intended that those who take advantage of this offer will
compete in a state/national competition some time in the upcoming
season before July 2004.
The club has subsidised $80 per position, so it is only $6 to take
one. However, this means any competition fees will have to be paid
in full by yourselves.
The first competition is October 11. If you feel that you would like
to compete and represent the club, please speak to Alex Norman at
training about this.

********
Coaching
********
A coach who has returned from surgery and rehab has expressed
interest in coaching our club members again in the near future.
We are very happy to accept this offer, however the financial cost
will make this offer a difficult process.
WE WILL NOT RAISE RANGE FEES
The range fee will remain $1 per shoot.
We will be negotiating with the Sports Union to have financial
support for this coaching. If this is not viable, we may ask those
members who wish for coaching to voluntry contribute for the service.

********
St Pauls Move
********
We will be moving.
When we will be moving is unknown.
We will keep you all posted

********
Other Upcoming Events
********
The only other major event left in the club calender is the Club
Championships.
It will be held later in the year closer to Stuvac as a final event
before exams for some fun and a indication of improvement from our
Inter-Uni competition in July.
Other smaller events and specials will be announced as they come.

Hi Everyone,
Another beautiful day at Homebush yesterday for the State/National
ranking round. Dan and I arrived to a lovely cool, calm morning and
an insteresting target allocations sheet. Amongst the 10 archers in
my division (Men's Recurve) were two AIS archers, Rob Turner and
Andrew Lindsay (Andrew was on the World Champs team this year), and
Sydney Olympic Gold Medallist Simon Fairweather. Unfortunately Simon
didn't turn up though... Oh well :-)

Anyhow, apart from a bit of wind during the second distance the day
was very nice for shooting. Scores follow:

Dan Bray - Men's Recurve Barebow
70m - 207
60m - 227 (is that a competition pb Dan?)
50m - 196
30m - 279
Total Ladies FITA - 909

Alex Norman - Men's Recurve
90m - 278 (huge pb and 3rd highest from the day)
70m - 245 (a competition pb but crap when compared to my 90m score)
50m - 284 (again a competition pb. Could have been higher)
30m - 332 (outright pb. Happy with it, though could have been five
points higher:-)
Total Men's FITA - 1139 (massive pb of almost 200 points and one
point off a Master Bowman score).

So another great day at Homebush. Hopefully we will see more USyd
people competing in the near future.

See you all at training. Regards

Dear All,

The first week of Semester has started well, with a good turnout of
shooters, which many whom we haven't seen for quite a while. We hope
those whose timetables now allow them to shoot more frequently will
do so, and those who only have a hour between classes will still come
and shoot, like dedicated Hamish =).

Please don't stay away due to the Range fee, because it isn't much
for the long term benefits. Plenty of people have purchased the $20
semester pass, so thank you.

*************
Below are the details for our upcoming Outdoor Indoor competition.
This competition will be a close range event, at 18m, on 40cm faces,
and the difference which will prove quite challenging to many is that
you each will have 3 targets to shoot at, in which each end, you only
shoot 1 arrow at each target face. This is done to remove
probability of arrow damage at the close distance it is shot. This
will mean that aiming skills at multiple heights on the target will
be required. We will put out closer targets as the event nears for
practice

When: Tuesday 30th September (Unfortunately it has to be a weekday
because weekends are booked out for Cricket season) It is mid
semester break for Usyd, don't know about other Uni's
Time: 10am Registration til when we finish, or til 5pm when the
booking is over (shoot time as per club training session)
Where: The Square, University of Sydney
How much: $5/Entry (Includes range fee and target faces)
What: 3x AustIndoor 1 (30 arrows, 10 ends x 3 arrows, 18m, 40cm face
multispot)
Close of Registration date: 5th September

Monies to be paid on the day. If something does come up, and you can
not attend, please let us know ASAP so we can adjust target
allocation groups etc.
WHO: Anyone who is a member of a University Archery Club, or AA/ANSW
as we are now an affiliated club.

Registrations can be emailed to : flehrad@...

Chocolate Sales are still continuing.
James Shepherd has been hard at work selling these for us, in the
Access Labs, and currently has sold 4 boxes, being our highest
seller. Thank you very much James =). We would really really
appreciate it greatly if others could help out as much as possible by
selling them for us. Please do come and talk with us about this, as
we only have another 6 boxes to sell.
************

This Saturday, we will be travelling to Campbelltown to pick up our
long awaited White Tail targets.
Fingers crossed that all goes well, and in the coming weeks these
targets will be placed into regular use as we phase out the Straw
target boards.

************

Lastly, but not less important is the issue of helping out.
It has been noticed by many of us, that there are members of the club
who turn up after everything is set up, shoot all afternoon, and
leave before we pack up. They don't have any urgency for this,
except what seems to us, the lack of willingness to help set up, and
pack up each sessions. Without naming names, we are very
dissapointed at this kind of behaviour, and we hope that in the
future this will change.
We do understand if you have classes to go to, or if you have real
reasons for leaving early, or arriving late, but if you don't, and we
find out, you probably will get some very interesting comments from
people who notice this.
Please help, and get involved, because it is as much as your club as
it is everyone elses, and as people graduate and leave university, it
is the responsibility of the younger members to carry it on, instead
of letting the club fall apart from what hard work has built it to.
So, if you are around before 2pm, come by and help set up, and if you
don't have to rush away at 5pm, stay and help pack up.
We appreciate those who help out very much.

Dear All,

We start Semester 2 for 2003 with the introduction of the Range Fee
beginning Tuesday 29th July.
$1/shoot (= $2/week, which isn't very much!)
$20/semester pass (1st week to Last Exam week inclusive only).
Please pay before you get your equipment if you have equipment
assigned to you, or pay when asking for equipment to be given.
We are relying upon the honesty of our members for this to work and
benefit the club, so please don't rob yourselves of better targets
and equipment.
Money should be given to myself, Kirsten, Alex, or Adrian depending
on who is there.

Another announcement is that there are two competitions to be held
later in the year.
The first event in the planning is the SUAC Outdoor Indoor
competition.
This is so far to be planned for the 27th September (Saturday) and
will be a 18m distance, 90 arrows, on 40cm faces. The cost will be
$5/entry to cover the target faces. More details closer to the event.
The second event is the Club Championships. This is normally held a
few weeks before StuVac/Exams to get some fun before the pressure
kicks in.
It will be a Geelong, 30m, 90 arrows, 122cm faces, and will cost $5
entry again. This is a opportunity to see how you have improved
since the Outdoor competition just a few weeks ago.

Chocolates.
We still have several boxes to sell. If you can help, please come
talk to myself or Kirsten about getting a box to sell for the club.
It would be greatly appreciated.

Uni Competition Results
***********************
I'd like to thank everyone who came, and helped out to make the event
as big as a success as it was yesterday.
The weather cleared up for the shooting, and we had some light winds,
but overall it was a nice day.
I think people really enjoyed shooting at uni, a different scene,
especially while facing tennis courts and construction workers. I
think we managed to get some publicity, as several hundred people
passed the field during the day, and quite a large number stopped to
watch our shooting for a few rounds, and more came by to watch during
their lunch breaks.
Next year, the competition is most likely to be co-hosted with
Homebush Archery Park, and will be held out at the Olympic Archery
park. If we can make it a officially listed ANSW event, and Uni Games
event, or at least SU Sport endorsed, then we may get more numbers
competing.

Anyways, here is a full listing of scores for the day.

Thanks also have to go to the staff at Benson Archery Warehouse with
their discounts on our target faces, and as well as donating the
lucky guess prize of a pair of binoculars.
We ran a lucky guess competition, where the number was between 0 -
1800, and it would be the average of all shooters at the end of the
day.
Alex Norman took out the prize with a guess of 1250 (the score he
wanted to shoot for a FITA?), with the average being 1227.

Affiliation - We currently have 14 people listed with interest in
affiliating and competing for us in the near future. They will
receive a subsidy on the affiliation cost (full price is $86 for 12
months till July next year).
If you would like to be affiliated and compete and represent us, then
please let me know by next friday the 25th July. Email me at
flehrad@...

Range Fees - $1/shoot or $20/semester pass (1st week semester - Last

talk to me during training before August 8th, or email me at
