Hi Paula,
we too, are in SE Queensland and have the itch thing happening at the
moment.
My Welsh Cob mare used to chew her legs apart until I started her on Pat
Coleby's additives (seaweed meal, sulphur, dolomite, copper sulphate) as
well as garlic and brewers yeast. Now my quarter horses have been
bitten by something and have lumps all over them (they are on the
additives as well) The Welsh Cob mare has no lumps on her but a tiny
bit of itch on her legs - nothing compared to before I put her on the
additives.
I have a feeling that the big bites on the quarter horses are due to
buffalo fly, but still not quite sure. My husband being a keen
fishermen looked on his fishing forum for a solution (as they are always
amongst the bities when out fishing) and we mixed up a solution of
dettol, metholated spirits, citronella oil and baby oil and sprayed it
on the girls for the first time yesterday. This fishing guy swears by
it. I will just have to wait and see what happens now.
I would think that what is causing the horses to scratch their legs is
different to what is giving the quarter horses big lumps all over their
bodies.
My horses can get to lots of scratching places and at the moment I am
continuously repairing rugs - as for shows, I have no hope of taking
them to a show looking like this. The poor things are constantly biting
themselves and causing themselves to bleed.
I can let you know if this mixture starts to work if you are interested.
It is very frustrating and hard on the horses.
As for boots, I have a pair of cheap Showman Craft Masters and wear them
in the mud for hours and them ride in them and have had them for ages
and still good.
Hope you have some success.
Cheers
Veronica
