Re: [welshcobs] paddock stallion

Hi Bev,
Thanks for your kind thoughts, "Patty" was put to sleep yesterday with the help
of our vet, she went very quitely and we have put her just out side my window
under a tree.
I was to start my new year get fit and diet but pigged out all day ( foods my
friend lol ).
I have Patty's daughter "Ruby" who is on borrowed time as well, with heart
failure, she is comfortable at the moment and still enjoying life.
My bestest cat "Frank Darling " has gone missing and my other cat "oatie" was
run over on xmas day.
We are starting a non-kill branch of the ARRA (animal rights & rescue au).
In the last week we have managed to get a shop with cheap rent, donations of cat
mesh, dog mesh, and our lovely vet will be helping with very cheap de-sexing,
etc.
Its a great org as all the animals are keep, none are killed unless very ill, we
are looking for foster carers in this area ( Grafton ).
So Bev I dont think your odd at all lol.

Pam, I have been thinking of you with your poor little dog. I know how you
feel, we had our 16 yo chihuahua put down 2 years ago just before xmas and it
breaks your heart. We had her cremated and she now sits on our coffee table in
a lovely box with her name inscribed. Some people think we are weird!! ah well
thats our way. I hope the problems are not a sign of 2005, such horrific
happenings in the world. Hopefully it will be a better year than 2004.
Cheers

morning Bev,
Why did I have those 3 light beers last night (what a cheap drunk lol).
I have been up all night with my 16 year old mini foxi, Paddy lost one of her
back legs when she was 2yrs and last night went "flop-bott" she cant walk at all
as the old front legs wont support her, she is very distressed about the toilet
thing-o and in a fair bit of pain.
So it looks like I will be spending new year having my old darling put to
sleep, I thought I may be able to rig something up for the back leg (like a
harness with wheels) but thats not going to work as the front ones are just tooo
old to help.

Brave will have to wait for another day. happy new year Bev, although im sorry
to say but with all the poor buggers and "the big wave" and my own tini weeni
prob, it feels like its going to be a real bummer.

I know what you mean Pam. We still havent run a mare with Top Gun, we hand
serve everything. It would be so much easier to run him with mares, but I am
worried something will happen to him, but I suppose they are the risks you take.
We had an outside mare this year that had only ever been paddock served, she
wouldnt show over the fence to him and the women who owned her said she wont,
you just have to throw her in with the stallion, ha over my dead body. I told
her no, sorry, that I was worried what he might do to her mare, I would rather
one of mine to be the first guinea pig, not an outsider. I asked if we could
get the mare scanned to see when she was ovulating and we could just hand serve
her seeing as she wouldnt show, but the mare owner wouldnt allow me to do that.
In the end we talked the owner into sending the mare to Top Guns son, S.Q. Just
Cruisin owned by Donna Francis who runs with all his mares. The mare is now
hopefully in foal, after Cruise gave her a little
bit
of whats for and what she was there for and as I always say stallions know
when the mare is ready to serve, even if we cant see it. This is the first mare
we have ever had that wouldnt show to a bull and I never want another. All the
other outsiders have been served and have gone home, if only they were all like
that, life would be a lot easier. Good luck, as someone here said, hand serve
the mare first and just let them go and get out of there. Let us know how you
go.

Hi Bev,
Bugger you have said something to make me think and I hate that lol, I guess
the decider is how pushy the stallion is and Brave has been very "look at me im
tough and strong etc, etc", and I really want him to learn respect from the
mares, and end up with good manners, I dont think he will spend to much time
sniffing the poo when the real thing is there, I think he will bully up to them
and then get a big shock when they say "hey wait a bloody minute, we dont even
know each other yet".
I had put one of the mares in with him in his paddock and he ran her
straight through a fence, she is top mare and I guess thats what has made me
sooo worried, I though she would belt him one, but she didnt, that was when I
first got him, and I thought he was still young enough to be bossed while he
learned the ropes.
I have just had a horrid idea, what if he boss,s all the mares and I cant
stop him? !!! im getting cold feet again, help.
Pam

stallion paddock. We ran our old Arab stallion with a mare many years ago and
threw him into her paddock, all he did was run around and smell all the poo
piles and every time the mare would come near him he would chase her off. We
took her out, put him back into his own paddock until he settled again and put
the mare into his paddock. He was happy then and they were best buddies, served
her till his hearts content. This was only our experience, I'm sure others will
be able to help too.

Hi,
Do any of the cob stallion owners run their boys with the mares?
I have asked Sabina and she thinks that Brave will be ok to paddock
serve, how do you go about it?
put the mares in their own paddock first and then just let him in?
How many mares?, I have 3 mares.
Should they be in season or not?, or it doesnt matter?.
Will this make him more difficult to handle later?
I have a large (prop about 8as) will this be big enough?
Any advice please.
thanks
Pam
