Hi Carol,
Thanks for the info ,so would you say that you prefer treeless
saddles to "normal" saddles ?
     Regards Bridget

Hi Briget
I have two treeless saddles one I ride on a horse with no wither (I call it
the arm chair) and the other I ride if the horse has a wither. They mould
around the horse as they warm up and they are very comfortable for horse and
rider.

I had to ride in a normal stock saddle the other day and I regretted that
once I got off :-). They can take a bit of getting used to as you feel EVERY
movement of the horse, but I feel it makes a you better rider and improves
the balance.

Sometimes you can ask for a demo saddle to get an idea if its your cup of
tea, as they are too expensive to buy one only to find out you dont like it.

I find that my arm chair saddle does slip a bit as I am getting on (so I use
the trusty mounting block or get someone to hold the stirrup on the other
side) but is fine when I am on. I think they are great and very kind to your
nether regions.
regards
Carol

I do agree that horses with this fault should not be bred from however I have 3
in my paddock that prove that a stallion with this fault does not always pass it
on.
I was aware of the fault but also knew he had sired over a hundred foals and not
one had the fault. It was a huge risk but as the family are also the best
performed Irish Draughts in the world it was a chance I was prepared to take.

I guess thats also why the fault is so prominent in TB lines that race well.

     hi all :-)
i have seen a parrot mouth in a cob......
same as any other breed ,faults are going to crop up from time to
time.....
but as long as the line is not bred from and the horse can still keep
weight on and have a usefull life then good oh.

same as the ponies........there is no such thing as a perfect horse.....

i heard on the radio this morning(in wa) that a pony from the hurricans
last yr in america had a front of leg amputated below the knee. they were
talking to one of the vets over there and it has an artifical leg from two
inched below the knee. it was a pony and they said if it didnt have the
temprement it dose it could not have been saved. tolerates the limb being
cahnged and all......

but i do stongly believe if a horse pony cob whatever has a fault then it
should not be bred on.

       just my opinion

Not sure how it got into the Irish line but again does not seem to have stopped
anyone breeding to that line. I knew the stallion was parrot mouthed but still
bred 3 times to him. Not one of the progeny has any mouth issues whatsoever and
they have certainly inherited the best parts of the family line. I know alot of
the stallions progeny and have only ever met one who had a slight misalignment
which could have in fact come from the mare line.

The information that a line of cobs has mouth problems is news to me,
like Shirley I have never come across one.
I have seen a few TB's and various crossbreds with parrot mouths though.

hi all :-)
i have seen a parrot mouth in a cob......
same as any other breed ,faults are going to crop up from time to time.....
but as long as the line is not bred from and the horse can still keep weight
on and have a usefull life then good oh.

same as the ponies........there is no such thing as a perfect horse.....

i heard on the radio this morning(in wa) that a pony from the hurricans last
yr in america had a front of leg amputated below the knee. they were talking to
one of the vets over there and it has an artifical leg from two inched below the
knee. it was a pony and they said if it didnt have the temprement it dose it
could not have been saved. tolerates the limb being cahnged and all......

but i do stongly believe if a horse pony cob whatever has a fault then it
should not be bred on.

   just my opinion
   cheers dianne

I would certainly hesitate to buy a riding horse with this fault though. Not
sure how it got into the Irish line but again does not seem to have stopped
anyone breeding to that line.

Hi Sam , please tell us more !
I am debating about getting one myself and wanted a bit of feedback eg what
is it like for the rider and does the horse seem to move better ?
      Regards Bridget
PS does it slip at all, even when you mount ?

As a breeder of Welsh Cobs for nearly 30 years, I have never seen
one with a malformed bite. Maybe I have just been lucky, but I have
never even heard that suggested before!
As a Judge on a few different breed panels, it is one of the required
things to check teeth for overshot and undershot teeth, also in a
stallion to check that his "masculinity "is all there.
Some people do not like you to touch their horses mouth in case of
spreading germs, so it is often wiser for the judge to ask the handler
to open the horse mouth for the judge to see.
A foal that is born with a SLIGHTLY uneven bite( This I have seen in
two miniature ponies ) usually evens up within a few months.
This question re horses mouths is something that would be mentioned
and discussed at any Welsh Seminar, a very good reason to attend one
to learn about all conformation points! Shirley

Hi
Sorry if this sounds a dumb question but..........
Can any one tell me why a judge asks to look into a horses mouth when
judging a breed class.
I thought it may be age,or to see if there was a defect.
Many thanks

Yes it just foxed me.
I would of thought a defect would of been visible.
It was an APSB class and some horses had bits some didn't..
Wish I had met the judge I would of asked her.
Thank you for all your answers and I don't feel so dumb now lol

Hi
not a dumb question, tho i dont know the answer i think it would have
maybe more to do with like if they had a parrot mouth, defect or
whatever. I must say i have never seen a judge do that either. it does
sound weird! you would think it would be about the age, normally the
classes are set out like yearling 2yo 3yo ect ect. i duno!
