Hi Kim
My stallion went up and down onto a star post through his chest. Vet visited and
advised me to wash it but leave it open and spray debrasol(sp) onto it. It was
Ok for the first few days but then the flys and maggots started on it even tho I
hosed it and kept spraying the debrasol. Vet told me to leave it and just wash
it and apply the debrasol, and not to worry about the maggots(YUCK)
But now you would not even know he had a huge gap there.
I have pics if you want to email me

If it was me i would get vet advice, it only has to be a centimetre deep and
a couple long to need stitches if it is open it most likely needs stitches
and if he hasnt had a tetnus shothe might need one if you have antibiotics
on hand give him a shot, you can give my boyfriend a ring he is a vet and
can give you free advice and and if you emailed him a photo he would
definatly be able to tell you. his name is Dr David Lucas (03)56 822153 if
you show him or intend to show him you need sound advice as you dont want it
to scar.

Hi Kim,
i had a mare do this a few years ago and it looked horrible , firstly i would
give a tetanus shot and get some antibiotics ( just to be safe ) we have
recently come across ionic Silver as a wound healer and am finding it amazing ,
you can get it from any health food shop and you just spray it on and it starts
to kill all bacteria , we also use Manuka honey on wounds but if its hard to
bandage they may tend to lick it off as its so sweet , the silver you just spray
on ( looks like water ) and leave, its used for burns victims in hospitals and
now used in bandaid so its an old remedy recently discovered .
Hope this helps you a little bit

Looks like one of our ponies has had a star picket go into one side of his
chest, it looks very clean, not that deep,
   probably more of a tear.

Should I just keep it clean? Is it necessary to give him some Bute?

What about reduction of scaring, anything I should do there?

   Thanks
   Kim

We have too many boys here so I have decided some must go.
Trapalanda Downs Jaxon is for sale price neg. he is out of Chapel
House Bronwyn (Llanarth Jack flash(imp)x Oakhatch Carmen Campus(imp)&
is by Sackville Sinbad(imp).A lovely fronted colt with a super head &
plenty of movement.2 yrs old & adult registered. He will have foals on
the ground for me next year.Photo in Welsh Cobs Aust.
I have been absolutely thrilled with the first foal by Cwmkaren
Bigley Express, a lovely son with his dad's wonderful temperament.
However after this season's stud duties Bigley will have a new life as
a gelding with a teenage girl who lives 2 hours from where he was
born,in Queensland, as she is really keen to have him to ride.

Hi Angie,

very sorry to hear this bad news but yes look foward not backwards you can
breed another one , may be with spots . this is the second lot of bad news for
me as FD: Jack Daniels first foal of the season was found dead in the paddock
last night , they think it was snake bite, a very sad time for all those
involved.

Thanks Ange,

We are very sad ... he was a lovely little chap ...
quiet and full of self confidence ... we had put the
halter on him for the first time that morning and he
took it all in his stride.

Spotty is doing well ... grazing quietly ...

Now we are looking forward to our next Alladdin foal,
due on Christmas day!

Hi everyone, I just recieved a call from a lady who purchased a filly
from me 18 months ago and due to bad health is forced to sell her.

This filly is chestnut with a blaze and two hind socks, she is approx
13.2 with fantastic movement, heaps of bone and feathers and would be
a great show or breeding prospect.

Her breeding is as follows
Sire: Fluer de lys Hamish
Dam: Acheron Tamzin

I believe she is askinking approx $1400 for her, if I was in the
position I would certinaly buy this filly back myself as i believe
she is an assest to any breeding program.

If anyone is interested you can contact her on 03 57213803 or her
email is decjudy@...

Congratulations to all of you that are having beautiful foals at the
moment!!!!!

Cheers Janelle

p.s....her name is Judith

Thanks Natalie and Julie for your advice . That was terrible about your
foal, but unfortunately life can be harsh and unpredictable.
my friends Arabians are quiet ,although one does come from a "naughty
family"[all that particular line are very goey and can be a bit of a
handful ] , so he is probably not he one too use.
Breeding is such a big decision and I want to make the best choice I can ,
so the more informed I am hopefully I will make the best decision for my
mare and myself.
           Bye Bridget

Hello Bridget,

Yes Hamish was Honeys first foal shre is 12hh and Jack was
14.1 hh the resulting foal [Hamish] is a tick below 13 hh so just like we are
told half way between the parents height.

I think you have to know your stallions and what is behind them. At the present
time i have 2 small mares {maidens} they measure 12hh that are in foal to
Daniel, I do bring them up to the foaling yard when getting close to foaling.
the fosling yard is close to the house so they can be watched closely. I have
had several mares in to the boys that have only been 11.2hh ans they had no
trouble foaling.

I think they are just like us, you can have a perfectly good pregnacy but the
next one may be breech or bigger or what ever .

while you are breeding their are risks like any thing in life. cheers Julie

Hi Bridget,
Yes i would agree with most of what Julie has said.
She has been breeding for a long time, but i too followed the vet advice
and put my first time Arabian bred mare to an Arabian warmblood stallion
some years ago.
The mare was 14.2hh and the stallion was 16.hh.
The mare went 18 days early due to size of the foal and it took so long for
her to give birth to him that he died 10 min after being born.
My mare was so sore, torn and went into shock i almost lost her!
She also did not come back into season for another two years after this.
I personally would now only use a stallion of same height or smaller for the
first foal.
And what juile has said about checking out the foals from the stallion is
very true.
My stallion pennant goldrush sec D stands 14.1hh but his foal to my mare is
now 2 and just under 15hh.
The foal is a filly and was still an big foal.
P.s on the Arab x cob you really need to make sure that the mare and sire
are of good types not only in build but mind as well.
I have seen some (not my breeding) crosses that you ended up with a nutty,
stubborn and very very strong animal.- not nice at all.
Kind regards Natalie.

Hi Bridget,

I was told by the equine vet at Sheparton that you can go 2
hands either side of the mares height with safty so if you want a bigger
foal by all means use a bigger stallion but if not use one the same size and
as for the arabian side of things they are very good mounts poviding your
mare and stalllion are what you want a mixture off.

If you want to show it don't forget it is desirable to have them plaited

Just my opinon on this subject .

I have done the cob X arabian as well as big to little and little to big
and TB X cob as well.

I hope thid helps a little , Julie F

Hi Vuctoria,

yes this does happen in very few cases, even though your mare was 15hh and the
stallion only 13.2hh , he may just sire larger foals so it is very important to
look at thre pogeny of each stallion. my boys seem to sire very small type foals
that hit the ground and grow like mushrooms

so the motal to this is look at the pogeny of the stallion first and formost ,
it is quite normal to have some mares that have trouble but they are few and far
between.,Just like us Julie welshcobs@..., Victoria Smith

I am thinking of selling my welsh cob section c mare Dracmoore Rorshorch ~
Pedigree Below.
Sire : Narcoola Parc Dafydd
Dam : Winganna Red Rose
She is a chestnut with blaze and socks she has produced 2 wonderful girls for me
1 x chestnut with flaxen mane and tail, blaze and socks
1 x bay with star and socks
Lucy is now in foal to my Black welsh D stallion Grenwood Cicero due the 21st of
November2006.
I would like a bigger welsh d mare so would look at selling and or swapping so
at this stage am open
to all serious offers> lucy will also have the option to be back in foal to
cicero before she leaves our farm
so could be a 3 in 1 deal. Lucy is a proven broodmare she is a quiet mare but
has just been used as a broodmare,
Very easy to serve runs with stallion, has had 2 fillies so far.

Hi Victoria,
That’s what I worry about , you hear quite a few sad
stories about foaling and what can go wrong ,but on the other hand there are
plenty of foals born normally .
My friend owns 2 beautiful Arabian stallions both are from top endurance
lines , so I am thinking about one of them or a cob !!!.

Thanks Julie for the info , was Honey Bee’s mums first foal Hamish ? and if
so did she have any problems ?
       Regards Bridget

Hi Bridget,

My Appie mare was a maiden, we put her to a smaller
stallion ... she is still quite badly torn and very
sore ... I think, an arab would be a good start ... a
slightly lighter foal ...

My mare is 15hh and the stallion about 13.2hh.

Her pink skin has made it easier to see the stretching
and tearing ...

Hope this helps

Victoria

Hi Bridget,

I was told by the equine vet at Sheparton that you can go 2 hands
either side of the mares height with safty so if you want a bigger foal by all
means use a bigger stallion but if not use one the same size and as for the
arabian side of things they are very good mounts poviding your mare and
stalllion are what you want a mixture off.

If you want to show it don't forget it is desirable to have them plaited

Just my opinon on this subject .

I have done the cob X arabian as well as big to little and little to big and
TB X cob as well.

  I hope thid helps a little , Julie F

Welsh Cob Discussion List Rules
May 26, 2005

PURPOSE

We are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Welsh Cob in
Australia.
We welcome the discussion about all things to do with Welsh Cobs.

ATMOSPHERE

There is a strong code of proper etiquette on the Welsh Cob List,
and it is every contributing subscriber's responsibility to uphold
that code of etiquette and set a good example for others on this list.
Treat others how you would like to be treated.
It is very important that each subscriber does his/her part to contribute to a
healthy,
helpful atmosphere. We are here to share information and thoughts, discuss in a
friendly manner
and to help each other. Please be supportive of others,
especially those whom you disagree with.

ONE-LINERS

(One-liners are comments that consist of a few words to only a sentence in reply
to
someone else's post). Please resist the temptation to send one-liner posts that
add nothing to the conversation, such as "Me, Too" or "Thank you" only.
IF you have something more to add, such as elaborate on why you agree or how
someone's
post has helped you, then please feel free to do so. If you just want to thank
somebody
or let them know you agree with them, please email them privately. IF, however,
you have
something substantial to say and can do so in only a few words, this is not
considered a
"one-liner" and you are welcome to send such posts.

FLAME WARS/INFLAMMATORY POSTS

All messages must be mindful, kind, and peaceful, they may not be cruel or
inflammatory to anyone in any way.
Personal attacks and misleading gossip are NOT acceptable, and we expect them
not to happen, under ANY circumstances.
Consider carefully what you post about others, whether they are members of this
list or not, you will be personally LIABLE for any damage caused by your post.
If you can not discuss in an open and friendly manner, you do not belong on
these lists.
Name calling and derogatory comments are completely uncalled for and unwelcome.
It is natural in any discussion for people to disagree, otherwise it wouldn't be
a discussion... however, please disagree politely.
As long as you are courteous and don't intentionally offend or insult others on
the lists, you are a welcome addition. Nastiness, in any form, will not be
tolerated.

MISUNDERSTANDINGS

Misunderstandings are normal. No matter how well you think you explain yourself,
what you say may be misinterpreted.
If this happens, CALMLY clarify what you have meant, rather than take offense.
Give people the benefit of the doubt, and treat them with respect, even (or
ESPECIALLY)
in case of disagreement. Treat others how you would like to be treated.

OFF-TOPIC DISCUSSION

Off-topic discussion is not allowed.

SAFE FOR CHILDREN

These lists are safe for children. Please do not post content that would be
unacceptable to those under 18.

TRIM

When replying to another's post, please delete all that is not vital to maintain
the
coherence of the thread. Yahoogroups tends to add considerable advertising,
links, etc.
to the bottom of every post... delete these before hitting send on your reply.
Take special note if you are a DIGEST subscriber... please remove all material
that
isn't on the topic you are posting to.
Posting privileges may be revoked if replies to the lists are not trimmed.

SUBJECT LINE

When a subject changes, as they tend to do, please change the subject line to
reflect this.
Also please make sure not to leave the subject line blank.

SIGN/SIGNATURES

Sign your posts, preferably with your name and email address.
You are welcome to include your webpage URL(s) in your .sig file. Keep in mind,
though, signature files are fine but overly long ones are bothersome.

ADVERTISING

Advertising (items/horses for sale, services, events) are only welcome if they
are directly
concerning Welsh Cobs.

COPYRIGHT

Copyright is retained by the writer of a message. Public posting does not give
one
permission to publish a message in a magazine, repost it somewhere else, etc.
If you love what someone's written, contact them privately and discuss further
publication with them. If it comes to the List Administrators' attention that
posts
have been forwarded from one of our lists to another list WITHOUT the author's
permission,
it will result in immediate unsubscription and ban from the lists from the
offending party.

IF RESPONDING PRIVATELY, CHECK YOUR SEND-TO BOX

It can be AWFULLY embarrassing to mail something to the whole list that was
intended for
an individual (not to mention highly annoying for the rest of the list
subscribers).
Always check and double-check that the send-to box reads the addressee of the
person that
you intend to receive it.

HIGH VOLUME

We have many subscribers and, at times, this list can have a high volume of
email
discussion. Additionally, if anyone is concerned with the volume of email they
are
receiving with these lists, I recommend they change their status to DIGEST form.
You can do
this by sending a blank email to welshcobs-digest@...
To reverse this procedure, simply send a blank email to
welshcobs-normal@... .

UNSUBSCRIBING

To unsubscribe, send a blank email to welshcobs-unsubscribe@...

ATTACHMENTS / ARCHIVES

Due to the virus risk, attachments are stripped of all posts.
If you want to share your photos, you can do so at the Welsh Cob YahooGroups
website...
http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/welshcobs - sign in and post your photos in
either
the files section or photos section.
Message archives are also available.
