Thanks very much for this info.
It at least makes me feel slightly less guilty about my boy injuring
himself. although it isn't good to know that other people have seemingly
safe fences and still get injured foals it makes me feel a little less bad.

Thanks for the tips I will re-examine the fencing issue over the long
weekend.

Hi group

As my husband has his own rural fencing business we
have had the opportunity over the years to try all
sorts of fencing combinations! The one thing that
stands out is that you will find something that will
keep most stock in and as safe as possible but every
now and then you will have one pony on the place who
will not fit the norm <G>. We have had foals/yearlings
that will climb through pipe railing yards to get
where they want to go, ones that crawl under plain
wire fencing with offset hot wires, we have one on the
place now that will only be kept in by cyclone with
barb on top or endless food supply!! Any babies that
show any inclination to test the fences now gets put
in a large yard/small paddock my husband built
especially one year for a yearling that refused to
stay put no matter what, it has all plain wires with 3
hot wires in the fence line plus one offset. It is
hooked up first in the line on the electric fence
system, we have the biggest power pack you can get,
and we keep the yard damp along the fence line.
Usually a few good zaps stops them testing it quick.
The ground must be wet so they earth properly, and
what we have found is that the young ones that have
been through this never seem to test the fences again
at any stage, they will check to see if they are on
but never seem inclined to actually touch them. The
problem with the tape can be that the wires eventually
break so the whole tape does not necessarily carry any
charge, you need to keep testing them regularly and
replace the tape when it is no longer working, plus
when the ground is dry the ponies feet get hard and
shiny and they don't earth when they touch the hot
wires and can only be getting a slight tingle instead
of the full boot expected. Some do seem to get
addicted to this feeling!

Good luck!

Hi Holly,
Do you have a tester for your electric fence you need to check the voltage going
through, if it is shorting out or your earth isn't good (dry weather problem) it
will only produce a soft zap which horse can easily tolerate.

Testers are about $60 or husbands and children tend to be useful for this
purpose you just need to judge the strength of the zap by the loudness of the
yell but if they hold it and keep smiling you know you have a problem
note: make sure they aren't wearing rubber soled boots or your test won't be
accurate lol

   hi all
yes i am another lurker but i have a qestion.
i have a nearly 3 month part welsh colt who keeps going through
fences. so i decided to put a run of electric tape up but now he
just stands up against the tape and lets it zap him, i can see his
skin and hair twitching so he is getting zapped. i will go and get
some stronger tape and try that but please help with any suggestions
on how to keep him in

I can commiserate.
My colt who ripped his knee in January jas only just healed up after somehow
getting caught on a double electrified fence. I came home yesterday and he
has done the other one now. I could have cried. All I can suggest is maybe
stronger tape on stand offs and maybe a double or triple. Mine obviously
know just how clsoe they can go with the two wires so I am going to try
three.

I think the only solution is post and rails which costs a fortune.

Hope you overcome your problem.
Bye
Melinda.

I had a look, he seems to be the same colour as a race horse I once
knew. He was a dapple liver chestnut.

some websites on colour genetics are, they give details on how/why
your horse is the colour he is.

Hi All,

Well,
I giggled too. Just asked Norm what he thought a 'donger' was too.
For the first time in his life he was speechless and just grinned.
Still dunno what he thinks it is. lol. Asked my 15yo daughter, she
thinks its a condom hehehe.

Regards Julie T

Well i dont know about fun Dianne lol, he has "his" computer and plays
trivia (smarty pants)and I have "her" computer and do all my horsey things.
People laugh because we have a "his & hers", but it actually works out well
because I can stay on as long as I like without him asking if he can have a
go, or my turn now. lol.
Cheers

must be fun doing the computor together,
even when andrew is home theres never much spare time, always jobs to do or
catch up and stuff.
cheers dianne.

Well I'm glad you clarified that for me Dianne. I was having a little
chuckle when I read it and asked my hubby what a donger is (he is sitting on
his computer beside me). Well the look was worth it lol. He suggested the
answer was "their rooms", he was close, I was wrong (just my mind playing
little games again).
Cheers
