Hi Guys,
all I can say, is oh thank goodness!!!! :-)
Griffon (aka Hillswood Morningstar... also known as Sir Munchalot!) bless
his little cottonhalter is showing the "I think I'll just stop here"
tendancies while we are leading occasionaly.... and he just looks at me with
this glint in his eye saying "well... what are ya going to do about this
then?" :-) I was wondering if he was going to be really stubborn as he got
older, but if it is just a little cob quirk then we can work around that.

Griffon is a little wonder and is incredibly smart - it is almost scary how
fast he is picking things up. And he is sooooo CALM about things... even the
hose for our first washing on monday turned out OK after a bit (though he
doesn't seem to like getting his feet wet - he would pick them up after I
would hose them and look really confused for abit. grin.)

I have more questions ....

Griff is 2 1/2 now and is very easy to handle (The Hills did a fantastic job
on him). Almost everyone who has seen him, has asked when I am breaking him
in.... and then looks at me oddly when I say at the end of the year.
Is it better for Cobs to be broken in early (though at the rate we are going
he is doing it himself) and then to be ridden lightly? or should I be
patient and wait till the end of the year when he is three and is alittle
bigger.
Is breaking in and educating better to be done early and then there is (in
theory) wonderful ground manners?

next question...
is it normal for my little takker to EAT so much????????? talk about food
motivated! he will do nearly anything for a carrot, and the way he checks
all the feed bins makes people think that I am not feeding him (glossy coat
and round shape aside)! do I have a greedy guts or do cobs just like to eat?
constantly? (yes I have wormed him and his teeth are good, and he is
digesting his feed relatively well). Will I have to watch him when the grass
is good incase of founder?

another question -
when Griffon gets his education - If I have him broken to harness as well
and he gets used for a bit of harness work as well as riding, will he still
be comfy to ride? I remember someone mentioning once that horses used for
harness were rough as guts to ride under saddle. or is that just a ballance
thing for the ponies?

oh and another question -
Griff is about 13.1 at the moment, though he will mature at 14.1 or so.
Given that cobs are thick set... how much does an average cob weigh? when we
were worming, I had to work it out as to how many times my body would fit
into his shape, as the worming paste comes in portions of "100kg lots".
Its been awhile since I've has to worm a horse :-) but Griff was a
wonderfull chap about it all - it might have been ignorance on his part
though - grin

Oh I have lots of questions.....
Thanks
Paula (in her third week of Cob ownership)
woohoo!

well its like this it doesn't matter what breed it is you can get
some that arn't smooth, but ithink the cob is very versitle, i have
never heard of anyone ever lunging to quieten them, may be to get a
better top line but i think that is hard work as well, it should all
be there with not too much trouble. Julie i tried to ring last night.
well my day has been exciting as I weaned the last 2 foals and yes
it is freezing here as well
talk to you soon Julie F

Hi all,

While on the subject of high knee action and contrary to popular
belief, high knee action is NOT a disadvantage for dressage. I was
always, as I think are most people, under the impression that the cob
action is not suitable for dressage. In particular the European and
German judges we have met, don't care at all about the high knee
action. All they are interested in is obedience, impulsion, activity
from behind, smoothness of transitions and accuracy. There are some
judges who would dislike the action, but I look at it like a judge
not liking a particular colour factor. Jacks Under Saddle score
(high knee action and all) of 70%,(1st Premium) from Warmblood
classifiers, proves that really it shouldnt come into the equation in
Dressage. After Jack won at Barastoc, a lady(we still dont know who
she was) said to us ' he did very well, but you know they are only
suitable for harness'. We just grinned and said 'but harness isnt
suitable for Jack' I guess I always thought Cobs were only for
harness, but this is so not true. I have a friend who is breeding
cob/arab crosses for endurance as the cob outstays anything at the
trot. So, for anyone who doesnt already do dressage on their cobs,
have a go, high knee action and all. Oops, sorry rambling.

Wow, what a friendly bunch you all are, thank's so much for the info,
please I never want to jump anything!!!!!!!!higher then a blade of
grass lol, ok more question's,
I understand more about the knee action (I think )is this right-even
though it is a high action, it then follow's through with a big
extention? is this a comfy trot ?, I am not a show rider, just
looking for a good trail/pony club/-horse-pony type that doesn't have
to be lunged for 3 hour's before a ride.
What would you say is the diff in the cob and the QH, I like QH's,
but dont like the low carrage, seems to me that the cobs look like
you are put right in the middle and that appeal's to me, it look's
comfortable.
One more ??? promise not to laugh, (I can hear you )here it is-is a
cob a warm blood, hot blood-no, cold blood.

Hi Julie and the newbies or maybe some one else may come out of the
closet.
I can answer about the knee action was breed into them so they
could saftly be ridden on rough ground so there fore the leg is
lifted over the roughness. there are some of the breed with very
little knee action but this is not correct, its a lift and stretch
motion not an egg beater motion either and not a riding pony action
[daisy cutters].
I have 2 of jacks babies and several girl and they all are great
the boys are both broken to harness andboth are used to muster cattle
as well as their rolls aslad ponies and stallion for breeding so they
are versitle and all do have alitlle bit of that charicter in them ,
they have memorys like elephants they don't forget. i have been
breeding very sucessfully for almost 11 years and still have a wealth
to learn about them.
One thing for sure once you have one you will want more they are
adictive .

Hi Julie,

Yep it sure is and I would rather a Cob that stopped dead on his feet then
one who took off at the first chance they could.... It just shows how they
can be so safe for kids..... Glitter likes to have a little head toss too
it's so funny it's like they are having a sook and then they just get over
it and say Ok I'll do whatever you want... Haven't jumped Glitter yet....
but I can imagine him stopping at the first one too to have a good look at
it and analysing it.... hehe The thing with cobs is their little quirks and
that bit of stubbornness is something that really doesn't phase people
because their temperament overall is fantastic....

Just re: The high knee action it is natural but also depends on the
breeding as to how big and forward their action is but overall cobs have
great action...

I haven't been in the cob scene for too long either but can tell you I'm
not going anywhere in a hurry... Last night I put Glitter's pyjamas on and
Daniel had to drag me home because I didn't want to leave him.... My poor
Glitter has the sniffles... and he had a big sneeze all over Daniel last
night and as you can imagine Daniel was very impressed haha I just told
him to get use to it....

Anyway I'm raving again... That's what it's like hey Julie ?? hehe

Hi Lauren,

Yep, thats it, that stopping bit is the fun little quirk type things
they seem to do. Jack's is a head toss when you first get on him,
like 'I'm not gonna do this,' and them its gone after a one lap
warmup. Or always trying to refuse the first jump, everytime without
fail.

Hi Arcana,

Their temperament is better than you have read, smart, willing ,
easier to train than most other horses we have had anyway. Jack is
only 14'2" and has high knee action, but is the bestest of riding
horses (different). They make the BEST jumping horses. He makes sure
whoevers on him at the time (beginner or experienced) is SAFE all the
time. The only thing I have noticed with the cobs or crosses we have
had, and they are all different bloodlines, is that they have this
really cool teensy weensy little stubborn streak, which makes them
heaps of fun and loaded with personality. Nothing nasty or mean, just
fun(intelligence). Once this little quirk is figured out(and its not
hard with cobs) it becomes more of a game with them (the fun bit)
Someone else more experienced in them will have to tell you about the
knee action bit, because I dont know if they all have the high action
or not, havnt been in Cobs very long, but won't be out of them now ,
ever. They are super versatile, great performance horses or Jack is
but as I said I know nothing about bloodlines or if they are all like
that or not. I know Arabians have certain riding/performance lines,
so I suppose cobs do to.???

A POEM FOR COMPUTER USES OVER FORTY

A computer was something on TV

From a science fiction show of note.

A window was something you hated to clean.

And Ram was a father or a sheep.

Meg was the name of my girlfriend

And Gig was a job for the nights

Now they all mean different things

And that really Mega Bytes.

An application was for employment

A program was a TV show

A curser used profanity

A keyboard was a piano.

A memory was something you lost with age

ACD was a bank account

And if you had a 3-inch floppy

You hoped nobody found out.

Compress was something you did to the garbage

Not something you did to a file

And if you Unzipped something in public

You’d be in jail for awhile

Log on was adding wood to the fire

Hard Drive was a long trip on the road

A mouse pad was where a mouse lived

And Backup happened to your commode

Cuts what you did with a pocket knife

Paste you did with glue

A Web was a spiders home

And a Virus was the flu.

I’ll stick to my pad and paper

And the Memory in my head

I hear nobody’s been killed in a Computer crash

But when it happens they wish they were dead.

Yes, the C's and D's are separate, but it's C filly and C colt, and D filly
and D colt and C foal and D foal. It's not split, like the A's and B's.
(Of course not!) I have rung and asked if they will split the classes, but
was told that that decision can only be made on the day!

Regards
Tracy

Try eques or the show pony network, they'll do classifieds, & Emma's show
   horses too.
