Pam, I have been thinking of you with your poor little dog. I know how you
feel, we had our 16 yo chihuahua put down 2 years ago just before xmas and it
breaks your heart. We had her cremated and she now sits on our coffee table in
a lovely box with her name inscribed. Some people think we are weird!! ah well
thats our way. I hope the problems are not a sign of 2005, such horrific
happenings in the world. Hopefully it will be a better year than 2004.
Cheers
Bev

   morning Bev,
Why did I have those 3 light beers last night (what a cheap drunk lol).
I have been up all night with my 16 year old mini foxi, Paddy lost one of her
back legs when she was 2yrs and last night went "flop-bott" she cant walk at all
as the old front legs wont support her, she is very distressed about the toilet
thing-o and in a fair bit of pain.
So it looks like I will be spending new year having my old darling put to
sleep, I thought I may be able to rig something up for the back leg (like a
harness with wheels) but thats not going to work as the front ones are just tooo
old to help.

Brave will have to wait for another day. happy new year Bev, although im sorry
to say but with all the poor buggers and "the big wave" and my own tini weeni
prob, it feels like its going to be a real bummer.

We had an outside mare this year that had only ever been paddock served, she
wouldnt show over the fence to him and the women who owned her said she wont,
you just have to throw her in with the stallion, ha over my dead body. I told
her no, sorry, that I was worried what he might do to her mare, I would rather
one of mine to be the first guinea pig, not an outsider. I asked if we could
get the mare scanned to see when she was ovulating and we could just hand serve
her seeing as she wouldnt show, but the mare owner wouldnt allow me to do that.
In the end we talked the owner into sending the mare to Top Guns son, S.Q. Just
Cruisin owned by Donna Francis who runs with all his mares. The mare is now
hopefully in foal, after Cruise gave her a little bit
of whats for and what she was there for and as I always say stallions know
when the mare is ready to serve, even if we cant see it. This is the first mare
we have ever had that wouldnt show to a bull and I never want another. All the
other outsiders have been served and have gone home, if only they were all like
that, life would be a lot easier. Good luck, as someone here said, hand serve
the mare first and just let them go and get out of there. Let us know how you
go.

     Hi Bev,
Bugger you have said something to make me think and I hate that lol, I guess
the decider is how pushy the stallion is and Brave has been very "look at me im
tough and strong etc, etc", and I really want him to learn respect from the
mares, and end up with good manners, I dont think he will spend to much time
sniffing the poo when the real thing is there, I think he will bully up to them
and then get a big shock when they say "hey wait a bloody minute, we dont even
know each other yet".
I had put one of the mares in with him in his paddock and he ran her
straight through a fence, she is top mare and I guess thats what has made me
sooo worried, I though she would belt him one, but she didnt, that was when I
first got him, and I thought he was still young enough to be bossed while he
learned the ropes.
I have just had a horrid idea, what if he boss,s all the mares and I cant
stop him? !!! im getting cold feet again, help.

       Hi,
Do any of the cob stallion owners run their boys with the mares?
I have asked Sabina and she thinks that Brave will be ok to paddock
serve, how do you go about it?
put the mares in their own paddock first and then just let him in?
How many mares?, I have 3 mares.
Should they be in season or not?, or it doesnt matter?.
Will this make him more difficult to handle later?
I have a large (prop about 8as) will this be big enough?
       Any advice please.
       thanks
       Pam

Hi Bev,
Bugger you have said something to make me think and I hate that lol, I guess the
decider is how pushy the stallion is and Brave has been very "look at me im
tough and strong etc, etc", and I really want him to learn respect from the
mares, and end up with good manners, I dont think he will spend to much time
sniffing the poo when the real thing is there, I think he will bully up to them
and then get a big shock when they say "hey wait a bloody minute, we dont even
know each other yet".
I had put one of the mares in with him in his paddock and he ran her straight
through a fence, she is top mare and I guess thats what has made me sooo
worried, I though she would belt him one, but she didnt, that was when I first
got him, and I thought he was still young enough to be bossed while he learned
the ropes.
I have just had a horrid idea, what if he boss,s all the mares and I cant stop
him? !!! im getting cold feet again, help.
Pam

piles and every time the mare would come near him he would chase her off. We
took her out, put him back into his own paddock until he settled again and put
the mare into his paddock. He was happy then and they were best buddies, served

   Hi,
Do any of the cob stallion owners run their boys with the mares?
I have asked Sabina and she thinks that Brave will be ok to paddock
serve, how do you go about it?
put the mares in their own paddock first and then just let him in?
How many mares?, I have 3 mares.
Should they be in season or not?, or it doesnt matter?.
Will this make him more difficult to handle later?
I have a large (prop about 8as) will this be big enough?
   Any advice please.
   thanks

Hello Maureen,
Yes im going to do it!!!!, no action with the welsh B colt as yet lol and he can
have the welsh B mare who is getting very fat, I know they can "do it on the
sly" ( ummm not unlike some humans lol), 2 of the mares are not in with him
though so it should be allright.
I will be sooo relieved if I can run Brave with the mares, as im sick of moving
everything around, and just what to get the 3 riding geldings in one place, if
Brave can be with his mares then I can take Mikey away and have a ride as he has
been keeping Brave company.
Thanks so much for your help and have a happy new year.
Pam

I would be careful with a 14 month old colt in with mares, unless you want
them in foal.

Hi Pam,
I have paddock and hand served with both my stallions.I think running them with
the girls teaches them respect for girls. They don't seem to rush in when you
hand serve, they learn to read the mare.Horses are social animals, and my boys are
a lot more content when they have company.

I have managed to get a couple of ok pics of Brave and have put them
in the for sale section, 1 is under Kellys kittens (huh!!!) dont
know why but the kittens are stuck in the digital camera lol, so
because of the kittens we can only take 8 pics at a time, and by the
time I make a couple of duds then look for my glasses, to much
light, poo faced horse, dogs running amuck etc, im lucky to get any
lol

Congratulations on getting a wonderful Xmas present. The first thing I
suggest you do is order a copy of the 2005 UK Journal. It includes details
of a number of studs.
You can order by going into the WP&CS web site. There is a list of studs
linked to that web site.
You should book your accommodation for the period of the Royal Welsh show as
soon as possible. The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society will provide a list
of accommodation. If possible find somewhere in Builth Wells so that you can
walk to the showground.
If however you are hiring a camper van then book your site for the duration
of the show early.
There are shows somewhere almost every day of the week. You could be
arriving in time for the Glanusk stallion show at the Royal Welsh Show
grounds which is at the end of May.
Again there is a list of shows linked to the WP&CS web site.
Happy planning.
JR

   Thanks Kim and Sam,
Maybe my age, maybe my elderly father dying recently reminds me of
my own mortality, I have been a vegi for about 10 years now, ( not
the norm in "BIG RIVER COUNTRY" lol.
Another thought is perhaps I have been toooo worried about what
people thought of me, had to fit in etc, had to keep up, I cut my
hair off on Xmas day!! or maybe I have just gone mad (menopause?,
was I going up the stairs or comming down the stairs?) or maybe to
many brain cells gone with the drugs and drink of the 70s.

   Cheers
   Pam

Yes, I did ride Bella today, couldn't work up to the jumping bit
though, chickened out at the last minute (never jumped in my life
befor). I'm so proud of my girl she is coming along beautifully -
jumps like a gazelle, clears 3ft easy at the moment. I have to say
that riding her yesterday (wind was blowing an absolute gale, lucky
to stay on our feet) was so brilliant. I have 15.2hh gelding by
Barnon Imperial Jack who feels like an absolute giant & I need a
ladder to get on, but, Bella is so much easier to get on at 14:1hh
or so, I have to say that I quite enjoyed riding her more, the last
time I rode her was just after she was broken in & the difference in
her now is a real credit to Norm & Kasey and their hard work - Bella
too of course. She is a very responsive filly & does whatever is
asked of her. So, stay tuned for next week when I can finally say -
YES I have jumped & done so on my girl (she'll say - don't you think
it's time to stop with the Christmas Cheer already!!!).

Bella will be at the All Welsh Show along with my gelding in the
Working Hunter / Novice Working Hunter & other Cob classes too,
along with the other 4 horses we are preparing (my husband thinks
we're all crazy, his couch is much more appealing he says!! -
doesn't know what he's missing does he!!!).

Santa was extra good to me this year, he's sending me to Europe for
3 months from May 22nd to August 15th - so guess where we're going
first!!! WALES!!!!!!!!!!!!! (for a whole 10 days - husband is
groaning already) So for those of you who have been, any
suggestions??? John I'd love any suggestions from you also.

Hope everyone had a brilliant Christmas & not too much New Year
Cheer Friday night - will make Saturday awfully hard. I'm so
looking foward to meeting everyone on the weekend - Melinda I'll be
the stressed looking one!! Looking forward to meeting you, Symon &
the kids & definitely Deb's new ones too!! Mack is a real beauty!!
