I'm new to this yahoo group thing.
Where do you find attachments if viewing messages on the web page? Or
do you have to subscribe by e-mail to get attachments?

Second question, I suspect my membership has expired, can someone look
up for me, or e-mail me the password to look up myself so I can check
if I'm up for none, one or two years of back payments?

Please ignore the membership status/password bit of my last e-mail,
the password suddenly emerged from my memory, must have been thinking
about static towing.

Over 2 years out of date.

I notice the minutes are suggesting selling the payout winch due to lack
of use. I admit that I have not used it, but I like the idea that it
would be available in a couple of years time when I get more time to go
flying. I suspect there would be little gained from selling it and
potentially much lost.

There seems to be a resurgence in interest in thermalling/XC amongst
paragliders recently, and with the loss of the major tow paddock in the
York area it might be an opportune time to get more paragliders out at
Wylie.

Perhaps if the proposed spring comp goes ahead some interested PG might
get involved and take on the winch.

unmarked!
The mission is in good condition ,has beefy uprights but a bit older
than
the bug.

There is also an older cocoon harness for a 6 footer included with
the
wing which is green and gold and white.

Electric start
prop brake
tuned pipe
8 litre tank
It's a late bug 1 and I will split the wing. but why would you want
to.

BUG $ 5700.00 wing $600.00

mobile 0408957772 will get me most of the time.If no answer TEXT me.
I will consider part trade for a slightly slicker wing.

I am in Perth WA.

Gavin Nicholls has offered to organize some competitions for us – a soaring competition in summer as usual AND a new spring thermalling competition over several weekends in spring.

I reckon a novice-friendly and PG-friendly (see Mike’s post below) weekend competition is great idea. You might see some motor gliders out there too ;-)

With a weekend based competition we’ve got more control over the weather; if it looks bad we skip that weekend and use the next one.  We might also be able to fit in a hill or coastal ridge weekend if the weather is right.

Please reply if you are interested in any of these ideas.

Warning 1:  if you do reply we might ask you to help with organizing one or two things (nothing hard)

Warning 2:  if you don’t reply it simply won’t happen and we’ll all miss out.

I’m in for that. I might even be able to work out some sort of scoring for it as well. I am also keen to “adopt” a novice, should there be a need. Adopt a novice used to work well some years back and I for one benefitted from having a pseudo mentor to offer some guidance in thermal cross country soaring during spring thermal weeks.

Also just got the new Thermal Flying book from the cross country website  Read More   and it is AWESOME. I urge every one to get a copy.

Talk about thermalling....at the flex wing worlds they have just completed the longest task ever set in a comp, 285km! Over 50% of the field got to goal.

Hi All
Saturday was a bit windy 13 mph on the ground with a 20 mph at 2000ft.
Static line tow was reasonably smooth, I released at 1300ft into bubbles of lift.
The conditions were difficult, average climb rate 50 to 100 up but managed 2700ft for a 15 klm cross country.
Not a big day but a very enjoyable flight and great way to shake the winter cobwebs out.
Cheers

Hi Rob,

I have a huge collection of hard drives for exactly this purpose but I would need to know the exact make and model number of the drive you have. Even better drop it into me and i'll have a look. There is no guarantee that swapping the controllers will work but its worth a try.

Sorry to bother you all with non-flying stuff, but this is an emergency.

The electronics on my hard drive failed - so what I need is another 80GB drive to match the electronic drive on my old drive - doesnt matter if the disk that you have has itslef failed.  I will pay current price for the drive  (about $55-00 - if the rescue succeeds) to save data that is otherwise lost.

fingers crossed and hoping

For WSoarers readers - the PGs had a great day flying at Bakewell on Saturday (up to 12 in air at a time) while the HGs held out for stronger conditions - they should have taken what was there as the breeze evenually died mid-afternoon.

Glad to hear you got a good flight in.  Well done, g’donya mate for perservering.

On the coast it was too gusty for most of the day.  The wind finally settled down by around 5pm but by then we were off doing other things.

Subject: [western_soarers] FLYING on the weekend

Cheers

Scurge

Sorry, I can’t make it tomorrow.  Matty & I might try flying up the beach tomorrow afternoon if the wind settles down enough.

Hi All

Looks good for Saturday, wind may be up a little bit.

I am looking at going up to Wyalkatchem just for the day static line towing.

Anyone else interested?

Cheers

A few of us are heading down to Cottesloe/Leighton/Port Beach around 10:00am.  It might be strong enough for Cottesloe if you’re a PG or a lightweight HG, otherwise you can watch some mosquitos strafing the PGs.

The wind was off to the NW at 15 to 20kt. Gary Bell, Matty & Jumpy all flew.  It was a bit challenging at times because the wind was so far off at times.

Gary made about 6 attempts before successfully pulling off a (Thompson style) top landing.

Matty managed to land on the fence after many attempts, just to prove to Shaun that he could do it too!

Jumpy pulled off a neat downwind bottom landing after running out of lift.  Well done.

BLUE THERMAL DAYS

‘It is obviously harder to locate thermals on blue days when no cu's show us where they are. On such days we must base our route decisions on the relief and simply aim for likely thermal sources and triggers, or we must watch for other hints. Birds, dust, grass, butterflies or even pollen are good markers, as are other pilots.’

There’s a few of us heading out to fly at Wyalkatchem this weekend.  The forecast looks fine, it should be especially good for novice pilots who want to get a bit more air time or seasoned pilots who want to practise launches and landings or catching thermals.

Shaun and Matty will be there to provide encouragement and advice.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!
