A lot of good stuff to cover here. I'll attack one of the points now
with my take, and respond to others later.Hopefully others will chim
in with their takes as well.

Obstacles can easily be assigned a threat rating. Just visualise
what the obstacle is, and what stages might be involved in resolving
the obstacle. For instance, a group of innocent NPCs are are trapped
in a safe - and their air is running out. The PC, who has the trait
thief, needs to open the safe to free them to resolve the scene. The
safe is pretty tough to crack - we'll give it a threat rating of 6.
Our Thief applies his skill to it, describing activities such as
examining the lock carefully, using a stethoscope, flexing his
fingers, etc to get extra dice. Every success reduces the threat
rating by one. I'd describe this as the clicking of each of six
tumblers. Our hero may or may not crack the safe in time...

Now let's take it a step further. Our thief needs to get everyone
out of the building. Unfortunately the building is in lockdown, and
he needs to crack an electronically coded lock to escape. Sadly, the
lock has countermeasures built in, and will attempt to electrocute
anybody who is attempting to crack it. Same kind of thing as before,
but now our thief will divide his pool into yang dice to reduce the
lock's threat rating, and yin dice to avoid the countermeasures
while he reduces the threat rating. Each reduction in the threat
rating represents another number of the code cracked.

I gotta run now, but I will comment on the other stuff soon...
