I still lurk on the mailing lists, though I don't know how much use I'll
be. But I'm sure several others will chime in with helpful advice too.

I see that there hasn't been traffic here since early last year. Is anyone
still lurking?

I'm new to Wushu, and am planning on eventually running some online PbP games
with it. I have at least one question I'd love to ask to people who are
experienced with the system.

In the example of play with Wushu Open Reloaded the GM declares the Nemesis
split at the start of the reasolution step. Personally I tend to go with this as
well. Although I think it is down to group preference.

For me Wushu is all about co-operation. In traditional games the GM has his
secrets, but in Wushu we are all equals sharing narrative power. Declaring the
split allows the players to make an informed choice, and choose the pace of the
scene.

And there's still tension: Imagine I declare the nemesis splits his dice 5 /1 in
favour of attack (I can never remember which is yin and which is yang). Do you
take advantage of his weak defence, but risk a hit yourself? Or turn turtle and
hope your one or two dice are enough to score a hit on his Chi? :)

I am new to Wushu too. Haven't actually played it yet either and took a while to
grok it like Risus. I believe I can answer the question though, at least for me,
it would be secret. I remember reading somewhere, possibly on the wiki, about
setting up a yin/yang split cycle before hand and allow the players to attempt
to figure out the cycle and use it to there advantage. So once they discovered
that the Nemesis had a cycle of; even, even, offensive, defensive... they could
counter accordingly.

Again, I haven't played Wushu yet, but hope to at least play it via PBP soon.

Best,
The Bane

Discovered Wushu a few weeks ago and am totally digging it. (Though, like Risus,
it took me a little while to really "get it.")

My one question: In combat does the GM announce his nemesis's yin/yang split
first and then have the characters follow with their splits or vice versa? Or do
both sides decide in secret and then reveal simultaneously?

I think I prefer this last method--not knowing your opponent's split adds a
little more dramatic tension to the process, since you don't know if your
opponent is going to go all out on offense or stage a heavy defense or something
in between.

Anyway, just curious how other players handle this part of the game.

New here, and actually found Wushu for searching for a good system lite that
could be used for PbP. I currently use:

http://www.myth-weavers.com/index.php

They have the ability to do [PRIVATE], [OOC], [DICE], [ROLL], and other very
handy tags for PbP.

Time to go through all the posts here and mine it for goodness while learning
more about the system.

Pleasure to be here BTW,

Well, if the Players are all (or nearly all) selected, it's often
easy enough to create a specific Yahoo Group for the game!
People have done that for a number of games I'm in...

RPG.net has a play by forum subforum, but rpol.net is totally engineered for
play by forum.

The world is similar to now, with the following exceptions. The
cities are bigger, taller and darker and towns are smaller and
further apart and separated more by wilderness. Towns are more
likely to have tech from the 70's or 80's. Internet is less advance
and not as wide spread. Even in the cities it is limited more to
the corporate and rich or the hackers than the average citizens.
National news is also limited. Hoping give it a weird mix of old
world feel but still in the current era.

I found my group couldn't play for longer than about two hours - the
conflict resolution was very taxing on the old brains!

In terms of encounters it's unlike a regular game, encounters that you
would expect to last a long time can fly by. For my firefly game I had
5 or 6 encounters worked out in my head (where I knew the stats of the
people/things/situations they would face). That seemed to work for
me...

I've been tossing this around in my head for a few days now. I think
WUSHU could be quickly and easily adapted to run Professional
Wrestling. Rename Chi to "Push" (might need a better name, but it's
the term that comes closest to Pro Wrestling's plot immunity), Yin
dice become "Smackdown", Yang dice become "Intestinal Fortitude" (if
I've confused the two and Yin is defense while Yang is offense then
switch that around). The only rules change I would make would be in
regards to cutting promos. I would suggest that cutting a promo be an
exercise in pure RP, the other players then rate your promo from 1-5
and you take the average score as held dice or "Heat". I'm toying with
the idea of allowing 3 (or maybe 2) Heat dice to be exchanged for an
extra point of "Push" (as the wrestlers who build the most Heat with
the fans are usually the ones who are Pushed the most by the federation).

When choosing your Traits one should be your Gimmick (not necessarily
your highest rated Trait). For example (a really old school one) when
bribing a ref Ted DiBiase would roll his "Million Dollar Man" trait.

Whilst that was an interesting article, this is a group for the
roleplaying game by Dan Bayn called Wushu. Not the martial art of the
same name.

I hope you didn't join this group just to promote your blog, that
would have been rather foolish :)

Replying to myself, how sad...

I might have been a bit unclear there. What I neglected to add was:

If the shot occurs in the middle of a combat, then my advice can just
be taken as-is.

If the shot is an assassination attempt, play it as a nemesis
conflict, with the shooter getting in position, avoiding guards,
waiting patiently, aiming, and then shooting as the coup de grace. And
the other players don't have to do nothing, they can be causing
distractions, stealing itineraries, and tying up the enemy resources.
All while the nemesis marshals his security forces to round up
suspicious types, search rooftops etc.

Remember that in Wushu, when you play a round you are not rolling to
see if the characters succeed or fail, you are narrating cool stuff
that happens, and seeing if it matters to the plot.

So in the round that PC1 fires a arrow at the Big Bad, the Big Bad
might be:
-dodging
-grabbing a henchman and interposing him
-taking the hit and threatening revenge
-taking the hit and life-draining someone nearby
-narrowly missed by being lucky
-doing something not even combat related

because as long as he is doing something he gets to roll dice. And if
he does nothing offensive, but manages to score attack successes, you
can either leave it up to the player to describe something going
wrong, or narrate something interesting at the start of next round.

And of course this only matters if the PC describes successfully
hitting the Big Bad. He might describe the arrow missing by an inch,
or striking the BB's weapon, or even just making him flinch. It all
generates dice.

Hi All,

I'm a newbie to Wushu and have a question. I've GMed the game once,
with a fantasy setting of my own, and I had a bit of trouble figuring
out how to adjudicate contests that weren't exactly combat but weren't
appropriate for scab rolls either. For example, in one scene a
character launched a ranged attack against a Nemesis, who was too far
away for any of its traits to be applicable (it had things like
Supernatural strength (5), Soul-draining touch (4), etc.). Any
suggestions how to GM something like that in Wushu

Supernatural strength is easily used at range.  It's called "throwing large heavy objects".

Well, there's always the Mook rules...

    Two ideas...
{Well, other than not designing your Nemesis like that!} :->

1.) Treat it as normal combat, using the default skill of 2 for the
Nemesis (since Ranged combat isn't his thing...), or
2.) Treat it as a Mook Attack, with the "Threat rating" representing
how hard it is to make the shot...
or, perhaps, a Scab roll, where a high Roll of '6' means you scored a
point of Chi on him, and a '5' means he isn't hit, but is 'pinned
down', and can't close the range!
{Okay, that's four... don't complain!} :->

How do you spend your spare time?

I am a 25 lovely woman, open-minded and active, but I often feel bored
and nothing to do now. Because my husband was
dispatched to Singerpore for working by his company. I always have to
spend the time myself. So i would like to know more
friends and have the happy time with them.

May I know you? Are you willing to share your spare time with me? If
so, please check
my profile and photo at my personal page below...username
is:muslimslove10, you can chat to me after login.
