Group Description

This group has been set up to share information, knowledge and inspiration in relation tree management in Melbournes Basalt Plains. Feel free to post questions, opinions, or promote events or achievements.

Melbourne's Basalt Plains have been formed as a result of lava flows from volcanoes as recent at 1 million years ago. These heavy cracking clays get waterlogged and then crack open in dry conditions making it difficult to establish trees. Added to this the region is in a rain shadow and only get around 400mm per year that is half the rest of Melbourne.

These factors make tree selection and establishment techniques critical in acheiving good results.

With the impacts of the Greenhouse effects taking hold the importance of tree establishment is critical. We need more trees to cool the urban environment and the bigger the trees the more the impact the trees have in cooling the urban heat sink.
