Some scientists see plague tied to DDT ban

WASHINGTON – A forgotten old nursery rhyme is having more meaning for Americans these days.

"Sleep tight. Don't let the bedbugs bite."

But they are biting in all 50 states as they haven't bitten since the 1940s, say pest control companies, scientists and health officials. And, indeed, it is making sleep more difficult for Americans of all walks of life – from denizens of homeless shelters to those visiting the swankiest five-star hotels.

Outbreaks of bedbug infestations have been reported from coast to coast, north and south and among rich and poor. Experts attribute the plague largely to two factors: increased travel and the banning of DDT and other effective pesticides that virtually wiped out "Cimex lectularious," the Latin name for the pest.

A November newsletter from Doctors for Disaster Preparedness made the link between the rise of bedbug infestations and the U.S. banning in 1972 of the potent pesticide DDT.

"No chemical in history has saved more lives than DDT, and few if any have a better safety record," the organization decried.

Dozens of other experts made the connection with DDT and increased travel. The banning of DDT has also been linked worldwide to the major increase in malaria, which annually took the lives of millions before DDT nearly wiped out the mosquito-borne plague. Many countries have reintroduced the use of DDT to fight malaria.

Bedbugs are often confused with lice, fleas or scabies.

Bedbugs are small flat bugs about the size of an apple seed, growing up to one-quarter inch in adulthood. They resemble tiny cockroaches without wings and live in the crevices of beds. They generally only come out at night to feed on people's blood with a painless bite. Signs of the bites are red, itchy welts on your skin in the morning.

Health officials say to look for dark red or black streaks of digested blood on the sheets along with a very distinctive, sweet smell which is the telltale sign of bedbug infestations.

A survey by Orkin Pest Control found reports of bedbug infestations increased 300 percent between 2000 and 2001, 70 percent between 2001 and 2002, and 70 percent between 2002 and 2003. The company said it had reports of infestations last year in 33 states.

In a statement, the company said, "We first started seeing [bedbugs] in hotels, but in the past year have also treated infestations in homes, apartments, college dormitories, condominiums, aircraft and cruise ships."

Bedbugs can survive for up to a year lying in wait for the nice warm body of an unknowing traveler. Once discovered, they can be difficult for a hotel or cruise ship or homeowner to eliminate, requiring special insecticides and tools, not just a can of bug spray.

"Homeowners are staying in hotels, picking up bedbugs in their suitcases and bringing them home," Cindy Mannes of the National Pest Management Association in Dunn Loring, Virginia, outside Washington, told the Washington Post.

One Boston mother reportedly threw out her children's bunk beds and her own and asked her landlord to fumigate her apartment. When that didn't end the rash of ugly bug bites on her children, she moved, leaving her possessions behind for fear they'd become infested. Bedbugs cost her $6,000.

According to dozens of experts, the bedbug had virtually disappeared from the United States during World War II, when the pesticide DDT was introduced. But the banning of DDT and other effective pesticides due to environmental concerns has spurred their return.

There are a range of treatments. At hotels, for example, Orkin uses high-temperature steam (heated to 212 degrees Fahrenheit – about 100 degrees hotter than they can withstand) which instantly kills adults and their eggs.

The company recommends cleaning nine rooms at a time: the room where the complaint was lodged, the rooms on each side as well as the three rooms above and three rooms below. Headboards and bed frames are taken apart.

"This is one of the hottest bug issues in a generation," said Michael Potter, a professor of urban entomology at the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture in Lexington. "Bedbugs are going ballistic."

Potter said that while bedbug infestations were common before World War II, the widespread use of DDT virtually eliminated them in some parts of the world.

Mysterious outbreak of bedbugs in all 50 states

        Meredith May, Chronicle Staff Writer

        Sunday, April 8, 2007

Adult bed bug photo from the California Dept. of Health S...

Walter has stopped hugging his friends. He is throwing out his clothes and furniture, and he rarely comes out of his Tenderloin hotel room anymore.

He's not suicidal, but darn near. He has bedbugs.

Nearly eradicated in the United States 50 years ago, resistant strains of "super" bedbugs are infesting mattresses at an alarming rate. In what's being touted as the biggest mystery in entomology, all 50 states are reporting outbreaks of the blood-sucking nocturnal critters.

Pest control companies nationwide reported a 71 percent increase in bedbug calls between 2000 and 2005. Left alone, a few bedbugs can create a colony of thousands within weeks.

"We never treated bedbugs until 2002. Now we have a dedicated bedbug crew working on this every day," said Luis Agurto, president of Pestec in San Francisco.

Agurto's arsenal includes a vacuum, steam heat to cook the bedbug eggs and targeted spraying of insecticides. It takes three, eight-hour visits and about $500 to $750 to exterminate one room. A whole house would cost closer to $5,000.

The bulk of Agurto's clients live in low-income hotels and shelters in the Tenderloin, but he's been called to five-star hotels and suburban homes in Walnut Creek.

Bedbugs have been found in moving vans, public transit seat cushions, airplanes, college dorms and even a Bay Area meditation retreat. They spread by hitching a ride on your clothes or in your luggage and crawling off to infest your home or apartment building.

Nearly 300 bedbug infestations were reported to San Francisco health officials in 2006, more than double the number in 2004. Most of the cases involved travelers discovering bedbugs in upscale hotels.

The size and shape of a lentil, bedbugs lay eggs during the day and hide in your bed, clothing and light sockets. At night, they suck your blood, leaving itchy bumps on your skin and little bloody excretions on your sheets. They don't pass diseases, but they are incredibly difficult to exterminate, even following their blood hosts who move to new apartments trying to get away.

The bedbug resurgence has sparked Web sites like bedbugger.com, where people share extermination tips, bite mark photos and counsel each other through the stigma. There are bedbug symposiums, cover stories in American Entomologist magazine and dozens of videos depicting infestations on YouTube. California just issued its first state bedbug guidelines, and New York lawmakers want to ban the sale of reconditioned mattresses after 4,600 bedbug cases were reported in 2006.

"The Laundromat near my building is packed, the tenants are in there, washing everything they own and giving each other knowing glances," said Walter, who has been battling bedbugs for five weeks and fears he will be kicked out of his Tenderloin studio and made a pariah if he reveals himself.

Lady Bug, a beagle professionally trained to sniff out bedbugs, makes regular rounds with Agurto's Pestec crew in San Francisco. On Friday, the dog inspected Tina Blade's room at the Empress Hotel in the Tenderloin, smelling the bed frame, baseboards and carpet.

To Blade's relief, Lady Bug deemed the room all clear. Blade is not among the dozen people who have had bedbug infestations in the 90-room Empress, but she has been bitten at other single-room occupancy hotels in the neighborhood.

"I'd always heard that nursery rhyme, 'Don't let the bedbugs bite,' but I never knew it was real until I moved to San Francisco," she said.

Empress manager Roberta Goodman is proactive about bedbugs. She conducts tenant meetings, keeps Pestec on call and has Lady Bug in every month to make sure the bugs are staying at bay.

"I can keep our community educated, but I can't control the guests who are coming in and out; that's why we do monthly checks," she said.

Bedbugs were nearly eradicated after World War II, when exterminators and homeowners used DDT to get rid of the pests.

Experts say bedbugs are making a comeback because of increased global travel and a shift toward less-toxic pest control. As people are backing away from harsh chemicals and indoor spraying, the bugs are becoming increasingly resistant to the pesticides.

"We don't use as harsh chemicals as we used to, we don't spray mattresses with insecticide before selling them anymore, and the bugs are getting increasingly resistant to the few chemicals we have left," said public health biologist Laura Krueger, who wrote the new bedbug guidelines for the California Department of Health Services.

Nearly all exterminators use pyrethroids, which are a synthetic version of pyrethrum, the substance found in chrysanthemum flowers. But last fall, at the University of Kentucky, some of the nation's best bedbug researchers delivered some sobering news -- while they could kill bedbugs born in the lab with pyrethroids, four groups of adult bedbugs brought in from the outside were unaffected.

Because bedbugs are such a new phenomenon, people don't know what to do about them and are often unwittingly making their problem worse, said Nobugsonme, a New York woman who runs the bedbugger.com Web site to help sufferers cope.

A victim herself who wanted to remain anonymous, Nobugsonme said in a phone interview with The Chronicle that a series of pest control visits is the only way to get rid of the bugs. Moving the mattress, sleeping in the living room, using a bug fogger or moving in with a friend will only relocate the bugs, she said.

"People who throw away all their possessions and battle this for months and spend thousands on pest control only to relocate and have the bugs reappear are really traumatized," she said. "They are getting only a few hours of sleep at night, they feel itchy all the time, some go to therapy over it."

Thirty percent of people don't have skin reactions to bedbug bites, and may not notice an infestation until it has gotten out of control.

Pest control researchers are experimenting with alternatives such as steaming or freezing the bugs to death, and some New Jersey exterminators are gassing them with the termite killer Vikane.

UC Berkeley urban entomologist Vernard Lewis is trying to get grant money to build a baited bedbug trap.

Bedbugs give off a distinctive odor, described as rotting coconuts, and that's probably how the males and females find each other, he said.

"If we can mimic that funk, that stink, I think we could make baits and monitor them," Lewis said.

Until the experts figure it out, bedbug sufferers will have to help each other fight back and raise awareness.

When Atlanta filmmaker Kyle Tekiela made a short bedbug film noir and put it on YouTube, he was shocked by how many people contacted him begging for help with bedbug problems.

"Students from all over the country sent me videos of their dorm rooms," Tekiela said. "This one guy did a 360 where the ceiling meets the walls and there was a three-inch band of bedbugs all the way around."

          Killing Dust Mites

We have recently discovered that my husband is allergic to dust. His allergist informed him that unless we wash everything in hot water, the dust mites will not be killed. There are products on the market that will kill the mites when added to the laundry, but they are very expensive. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can kill the dust mites without spending a ton on chemicals? Also, am I wrong in thinking that the hot water could damage some of our clothing/linens?
          Claire in Athens, GA

          Make Internal and External Changes

Do as your doctor says and start washing your laundry in hot water, especially your outer layers of bedding. It works! Also, you might want to change your HVAC filters to HEPA-type ones (found in your local hardware store, Home Depot, or Lowe's). The difference is noticeable right away.

If you have pets, you might want to think about purchasing a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter on it to help when vacuuming stirs up pet hair. It likes to gather at your baseboard trim, so you'll need to clean those areas often.

Also, when pets go outside for extended stays, run a damp washcloth over their coats to remove pollen and loose dander when they come back inside. When the coat dries, follow with vigorous brushing (with and against grain) to remove any loose hair that the washcloth may have missed. Animal saliva itself sets off allergies, so frequent wiping and brushing will help prevent Fido and Fluffy from having to groom themselves, replacing pollen and dander with saliva.

When an allergic episode comes on (nasal for me), I take two 1000-mg. fish oil caps and two green tea caps to stop the histamine action and remove any histamines that have escaped into my system (causing sinus pain and swelling). I take one of each daily to help prevent episodes from ever happening, but sometimes my cats over-power my good works.
          FW

          Freeze Them Out

Our son's allergist told us that we can put stuffed animals in the freezer overnight (or in the car or unheated garage when the temperature is below freezing). If you have extra sets and enough room in the freezer, I'm sure this would probably work for the bed linens as well.
          AJ in Ohio

          Remove the Eggs and Droppings

My allergist says that there is really no way to eliminate the mites themselves. He suggested that you could bathe in boiling oil and the dust mites would still be back the next day. What you want to do, as much as possible, is remove their eggs and their droppings. These are what actually cause the allergic reaction. So wash everything regularly in the hottest water it can tolerate. Most importantly, get rid of things in which dust mites like to lay their eggs. Feather pillows (or anything else containing feathers, such as a down jacket) are the worst. Carpets and rugs can also harbor the mites and their droppings; if you can't get rid of these, treating them with the expensive stuff is probably a good idea. Dehumidifying your home may also help, since dust mites like a humid climate. Finally, most sources agree that it's wise to cover your mattress with a dust-proof cover. I haven't tried this myself, though.
          Amy

          Tips from Allergy Sufferer

I suffer with allergies. Here are my tips for getting rid of dust mites:

          1. Wash linen and drapes in hot water.

          2. Keep humidity in the house under 35%.

          3. Remove carpeting, upholstered furniture, drapes, curtains, stuffed toys, and other fabric-covered furnishings from house and replace with easy-to-clean items.

          4. Cover mattress, box spring and pillows with allergenic covers.

          5. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Never sweep, as it spreads the dust around.

          6. Use a Swiffer Wet Jet to wash floors after vacuuming.

          7. Use an air cleaner with HEPA filter

          Christine from Montreal

          Try this Three-Step Approach

Some items can be faded or damaged by washing in hot water. However, since the alternative is to not use them, it is probably worth the risk for items that are in the house. I would use a combination of washing, eliminating and enclosing to beat the dust mites.

Wash everything possible. If the item is bedding and needs to be washed every week, then make sure you buy things that can be washed at home. For example, ditch that goose down comforter unless you enclose it in an allergenic cover, which can be bought at a linen store. Then wash the cover every week and replace it or just be simple and get a heavy washable quilt to replace it. I replaced non-washable bedspreads with washable ones (quilts), got rid of carpet in the bedroom, and keep clothes neatly put away in drawers or storage bags with cedar so they are not out to give dust mites a home sweet home.

Eliminate things like carpet on the floor and ornate surfaces in the decor that leave a lot of places for dust to stick and are hard to clean. Your goal should be zero items out on bedside tables other than the phone and alarm clock. Everything else should find a home in the drawer or be moved somewhere else.

Enclose your mattress, pillows, box spring, comforter, etc. in allergenic covers. If you cannot wash decorative pillows, then they need to move out. It cost me about $100 to buy all the necessary covers and a couple of washable rugs for beside the bed. It was money well spent, since I saved on medications that were no longer needed!
          Debbie

          Use Vellux Blankets

My daughter was diagnosed with a severe dust mite allergy. We were told to concentrate on reducing the dust mite population in the bedroom as a person spends several hours sleeping in bed each night. We were able to replace the bedroom carpet with linoleum, which was a big help. We purchased special mattress and pillow covers. They were pricey but worth it to reduce the ongoing health problems that occurred as a result of the dust mite allergy. All bedding needed to be washed regularly in hot water.

We replaced comforters and regular blankets with vellux blankets. I was able to buy some large-sized end pieces of vellux material at a local fabric store, which were used as blankets on our daughter's bed. Vellux blankets are very comfortable and warm and can stand up to regular hot water washing and drying in the dryer.

Another interesting tip that was given by a public health nurse was to put cushions and very favorite stuffed toys into a large garbage bag every month and put the bag in our freezer for 48 hours. This apparently also kills the dust mites. (We had reduced the stuffed animal population already but were able to keep a few favorites by rotating them for this freezer treatment!).

Incidentally, one can have a course of dust mite allergy shots (administered at doctor's office) and this was also very effective in reducing the allergic reaction in our daughter.
          Helen

          Consider Air Mattresses

Yes, the products are expensive, but they work. My nine-year-old daughter has a severe allergy to mites. Her doctor said to wash the things her face touches a lot. Therefore, I only have to wash her bedding with the de-mite laundry additive. I wash the sheets and blanket weekly and mattress cover and bedspread monthly. One large bottle lasts me a year, and because I do not need to use hot water, my linens will last longer and she can have the colorful ones. Plus, I can wash her favorite stuffed animals with it. Compared to what I paid on prescriptions and doctor visits before discovering this stuff, I am money ahead.

Also, a cheap way to reduce the mites is to switch to an air mattress. These do not have a place for the mites to live. We purchased camping mattresses from Wal-Mart for about $20 each for the whole family. We all sleep better! Febreeze dust mite spray seems to work just as well as the more expensive sprays. I just spray the furniture weekly and it really seems to help.
          Jody

          Wash with Eucalyptus Oil

I found this information in a health newsletter. It stated that dust mites are one of the most common household allergens and a major risk factor for asthma sufferers. The article suggested that washing your bedding with eucalyptus oil virtually eliminated these pesky critters, according to researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia.

The researchers got rid of 99 percent of the mites on wool blankets by soaking the blankets for 60 minutes in a solution of 6 tablespoons eucalyptus oil (0.4 percent concentration), 1 1/4 tablespoons liquid laundry detergent and 13 gallons of water. They then rinsed the blankets in cool water. Without the oil, the laundry detergent alone got rid of only 2.4 percent of the mites. You can purchase eucalyptus oil at most natural food stores or wherever essential oils are sold.
          Carolyn

          Keep Humidity Level Low

As someone who is highly allergic to dust mites, there are several things you can do. Definitely buy containment bedding to keep the dust mites from penetrating through your mattress and pillows.

Also, put a dehumidifier in your bedroom and get a humidistat that tells you the humidity level. Keep your bedroom's humidity below 50 percent and dust mites cannot live. Since your husband probably spends the most hours at home in the bedroom, you'll get the most relief from this. I found a dehumidifier at a garage sale for $30 and a humidistat at Radio Shack. I believe there is an economical one at Target.

If I am not mistaken, I believe putting things in the dryer on hot and running a few minutes will also kill dust mites. I do this with my children's stuffed animals.
          Linda

          Kill in Dryer

I also suffer from the dust mite problem. I wash all of my bedding in warm water and then put them in the dryer. I was told that 30 minutes in the dryer kills the dust mites. With that in mind, every time I change the bedding, I put my pillows in the dryer for 30 minutes. This takes care of all those dust mites!
          A

          Wash with Pine Sol

My allergist suggested washing in Pine Sol. I add about 1/8 cup to each load. And I use the citrus scent, so I don't smell like a tree.
          Serena

          Try Wintergreen Essential Oil

One very simple and pleasant solution is to use wintergreen essential oil. Use approximately 1/2 teaspoon in a quart of water and spray linens, and furniture. Also, add to laundry, mop bucket and air diffusers. This works well on bed bugs too.

I have been studying the emergence of bed bugs all over the USA, every state now, probably brought in by the arrival of Mexian illegals and for other reasons. They are visible but tiny, all sizes from milky eggs to larger, and look sort of like apple seeds that move. They can be brown to browish red, and will generally live either in the bed or on the mattress, or generally within five feet of you, 'dinner', and it's common for them to bite one person in the household and not another, even with two in the same bed. They either come to bite you directly, or even climb the wall to the ceiling, and have a tremendous capacity to detect a sleeping person from his or her breath! Then they fall down! They do not like sunlight, and when they crawl nocturnally, they ususally bite about an hour before sunrise, if you want to watch for them, try between 4:00 to 5:30 a.m. Their bites ITCH! You don't usually feel the bite, they have  a 'spit sedative', so not only is the bite not felt, but the spit causes the itches. They can and often do bite in rows up to three bites per bed bug, guess we humans are sort of like eating 'corn on the cob' to them.

Now, what to do. First, wash all of your bedding in hot water and dry in as hot of setting as you can.  Heat kills them. Besides, stripping the bed gives a better chance of trying to see them.

Get fine powder. Realize that this is also likely an irritant to human skin, we'll get to that solution to follow. You can use one or a combination of three. A big box of (1) borax. Then sprinkle borax all over the bed, all layers. And on the floor, make borders everywhere you can, to force them to 'hit some' when they are coming to suck blood of sleeping person(s). Or (2) diatomaceous earth, and I have been researching that. You do NOT want the swimming pool kind, it has been heated and chemically treated. The kind meant for spreading on dirt for benefits back to the earth probably has up to about 10 percent inert ingredients, but is probably ok, it HAS TO BE FOOD GRADE to work. The best is the variety meant to kill worms, and is even fed to animals as de-wormer. If DE is 'feed grade', or if it's designated to kill worms, but with NO ADDED pesticides, etc., and probably can be found in either feed stores or gardening sections or bug killer sections of stores, in a fine powder, use that. And (3) crystal silica gel kitty litter, but then crushed to a fine powder. The label will probably say something about silica or silicon, something like that. Again, it has to be powdered, and you can add to any of the above, esp. the borax, cinnamon powder.

Now that you have sprinkled powder ALL OVER THE BEDDING, pillows, around the rug or floor (Even the floor boards, cracks in wallpaper, behind hanging pictures, in dresser drawers, etc.), every layer, you are ready for the next step:

Have a spray bottle. For the base, you will need (1) rubbing alcohol, kerosene (don't smoke in bed!), or water. Then for mixer, you need esssential oil- or a combination: (2) cinnamon oil, clove oil, peppermint oil. (There are others, but any or all of these suffice.) Put this in the rubbing alcohol, kerosene or water in the spray bottle. Spray everything, all layers, all around the powdered floor or rug. Put the spray bottle next to the bed, beside the container with the powder you use.

YOU are going to react to all of this. Not only do you probably have itcy bed bug bites, but you are going to be sensitve to sleeping in piles of borax powder, or whatever. So after your daily bath or shower, you need to slather (1) Hypo-Allergenic lotion or cream all over your skin!  Additionally, take some of the spray bottle contents and put them IN your lotion or cream, you will have it in YOU too. Buy some (2) anti-itch lotion, too, and put it next to the bed. After you have moisturized yourself , put this next to the bed, too. So it's there at night. When you go to bed, you might want to put some more on, at least in places needed. And if you need the anti-itch agent, it's also there.

The bed bugs will not die right away. They can live and breed a long time without biting, so do not think they are gone, even if and when the biting and the evidence, the sightings, stop. In the meantime, you have done your best. There are many other suggestions, like sealed plastic wraps for mattress and pillows, hand held hair dryers or steamers, new mattresses, etc., even calling in professional exterminators. Ultimately, everyone has to deal with this the preferred way. No guarantees from any. --

("Cheyenne Cin")  - P.S. Make sure you don't let bedding hang down to floor, or give them anything for convenient crawling ease.

                              ===============

OK, they will move to where they can bite you in the wee hours of the morning, most likely your bed, unless you've been on the couch at that time. If you have been sleeping in bed, there is a good chance they have packed their evil little suitcases and moved there. First of all, you have to make sure they are 'situated', not scattered. But start with getting boric acid and borax and put it all over your rug, in your couch, in and around your bed- the borax is something you can't really sleep directly in, however. Get some corn starch for that. Get some 90% rubbing alcohol and spray it everywhere you think they would be, and it evaporates quickly, so you'll have to keep spraying. Some lemon in it is good, too, and wash wash wash- everything in super hot water and in a dryer. After you know they have gotten inside of your mattress, you must get either a plastic mattress liner from wal-mart or use garbage bags, cut, and with duct tape over every opening. Also put double sided sticky tape all around your bed (or couch, whatever). -- PLEASE LET ME KNOW how this all goes, also you can see them in the wee hours, and you are not going to be able to sleep well, now that you know they are there. Get a flashlight or turn the lights on suddenly, with white or light sheets, you can actually see them, they are tiny, and they move, but generally not real fast. Be sure to kill the ones you see, because you likely don't have a huge amt. of them yet. Am SO SORRY - this is happening everywhere, and now you are the 'lucky' victim, and I do mean victim. We don't have them now, we did get rid of them, but am always afraid we'll pick them up again somewhere. Be sure to put plastic wrap on your pillows, too- buy new pillows with the wrap there, and leave it on. Any clutter you have, if you can bag it in plastic and seal it, they don't get in or out. Make sure the light covers and every other other hiding place is sealed, duct taped, powdered or sprayed with rubbing alcohol. Even wallpaper. Esp. within about four feet or so of where you sleep. Blessings to you, dear friend. If you use poison bug spray, be very careful, it's dangerous to you. Also, on yourself there is some help with certain scents or repellents, but not the normal insect repellents so much. And there are anti-itch agents. You have a huge meticulous battle ahead of you, it's much like 'cowpersons and indians' - you HATE THEM, you will have MUCH JOY in killing them, there is nothing endearing about them, but lots of satisfaction in clearing your premises of them. If you do get bites, you are likely to end up with scars, I have them now, but you will do whatever you must. Again, so sorry, I surely would not wish this upon you. --Love,us

                                ======
I am so glad it has been working. Actually, you are right, they don't use those 'fixes' in the main headlines, and we had to do it all by trial and error, and found the best solutions. I am so glad you and others can put this to use. The double sided tape and the plastic over the mattress and box springs- ours 'settled' into the box springs nearer to me, I believe- did the final trick for us. But the 90% rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle (with strong lemon extract) and the powdered borax and boric acid were definitely essential. Keep up the good work, I am SOOOO glad you are getting rid of the tiny devil beasts. Thanks for the 'genius' compliment- actually it was desperation, but I'll take 'genius' anytime, haha. Thanks for the update, I have been wondering how this horrible problem has been going for you. If you look REAL CLOSE you'll see dead bed bugs on your sticky tape, and I loved knowing they got stuck there and died, no sympathy whatsoever. Even better, the ones who stayed alive inside of the plastic, kept reproducing, got starved, there's a real joy in knowing that! -- Love, me  - P.S. Oh, and the new pillows with plastic covers still on, a nice added anti-bed bug touch.

Thanks so much my Sweet Pal! I will let you know how this all turns out...wonder if this is one of the prophesied plagues, it's sort of like lice & fleas all rolled into one, YUK? I'm sure the Lord will pull me through!! Love bunches, buggy me

                                ===

I DO call it a plague, they are not reporting the intensity of this! There is speculation that, because it's biggest in New York City, that muslims dumped them, I personally think
all of the illegals brought them in, and of course banning DDT is partly to blame. I do know there is one deadly spray you can order online, we got a couple of cans, but never used
them, but you have to be SO careful if you use it. Last I heard, they are banning it now, too. I know too that the Lord will take care of you, but nonetheless I feel so sorry for you,
knowing what this is like. You have your work cut out for you. And your sleep disrupted. Love, me

                                =========

Do bed bugs come out doing the day time?

YES. Though bed bugs prefer to come out only at night, to bite you in your bed while you sleep (generally in the small hours of the night), they WILL bite you at any time of day if they are hungry and you are around. If you are not sleeping in your bed, or have made it hard for them to bite you at night, then this is inevitable. They prefer to bite at nighttime, in the dark, but will bite in broad daylight if they have to.

                                =====

This is a sort of 'review' from what was in FoodHerbHealth previous message)--

(If they are chemically laden or starving, they will attempt to suck your blood in the daytime. Mostly they live within about four feet of you in bed, after they have packed their evil little suitcases and 'hunkered down' together.) ----

It's good that your bites don't itch, some people don't have a huge a reaction as others- I itched like crazy. They didn't seem to bite my husband as much, just me. It is unusual for them to come out in the daytime unless they are starving or have been hit with chemicals. Of course, if they are in multitudes in one spot, spray there! The alchohol, unfortunately, isn't good for your skin, either, it's very drying. They hate sunlight, so if you can get a bunch of sun there, that might help- they also hate extreme heat and extreme cold. A hair dryer might help if you can actually aim it at them, but washing in hot boraxed water, and drying in a hot dryer is good, although it might scatter them, if any fall out of bedding when you carry it to launder.  It's always embarrasing to say you have bed bugs, although it isn't your fault. -- Love, me- P.S. You don't want to sleep in the borax and esp. the boric acid powder, but corn starch is good, even to soothe the itches. Although they are tiny, you can see them if you turn on the light or a flashlight in the wee hours, because they are (not real quick) moving specks on light colored sheets, they will 'weird you out' for a long time to come, unfortunately.

Hi All:  A bit of information that you might like to know about.  We have friends here in our community and one of their sons is an entomologist (insect expert), and has been telling them that there is an epidemic of bed bugs now occurring in America.  Recently I have heard on the news that several stores in NYC have had to close due to bed bug problems, as well as a complete mall in New Jersey.

He says that since much of our clothing, sheets, towels, etc. Now comes from companies outside  of America, (sad but true), even the most expensive stores sell foreign clothing from China, Indonesia, etc.  The bed bugs are coming in on the clothing as these countries do not consider them a problem.  He recommends that if you buy any new clothing, even underwear and socks, sheets, towels, etc. That you bring them into the house and put them in your clothes dryer for at least 20 minutes.  The heat will kill them and their eggs.  DO NOT PURCHASE CLOTHES AND HANG THEM IN THE CLOSET FIRST.  It does not matter what the price range is of the clothing, or if the outfit comes from the most expensive store known in the U.S.  They still get shipments from these countries and the bugs can come in a box of scarves or anything else for that matter.  That is the reason why so many stores, many of them clothing stores have had to shut down in NYC and other places.   All you need is to bring one item into the house that has bugs or eggs and you will go to hell and back trying to get rid of them.  He travels all over the country as an advisor to many of these stores, as prevention and after they have the problem.

Send this information on to those on your e-mail list so that this good prevention information gets around quickly.

Hi, Lorrona! Either you or I need to put this in FoodHerbHealth,

                                  - Also, if you do it, I would like to suggest that when they say "paper or plastic" bags, get PLASTIC and keep 'em tightly sealed all the way home to the hot washing machine and then the hot dryer! Thanks, friend! - THE MORE WE HELP OTHERS IN THE USA to get rid of bed bugs, the better we are also helping ourselves! --"Cheyenne Cin" -P.S. Pretty soon, even your neighbor or a relative coming to pay a visit can transport this horrible pest (or plague) if we don't figure out how to eradicate them.

There is speculation that they came to America via foreigners- either an intentional muslim act of terror (why New York City the most), via the massive criminal invasion of illegals over the border from Mexico, or now from the products made in foreign countries and shipped- which could also have INTENTIONALLY added bed bugs from muslims! It's like 'Cowpersons and Indians' only it's "Americans and Bed Bugs" now, and we are determined to beat the bugs!

We may never know, because there are also a lot of illegals in NYC, a lot of foreign goods shipped in. Let's put it like this, I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED if, even if they came in with the illegals or the shipped goods, there was some 'muslim enhancement', on purpose.

Hotel is full of muslims, very scary and frightening. They own the hotel so you are surrounded by then 24/7. First night was ok until kids woke up covered in "bites" no wonder because mattresses are very old and worn out.I reported the bites to Mr. Muslim Manager and he said my children probably got them elsewhere. He was very rude ,but agreed to move us to new room. Next morning, the kids (3 & 4 years) were really bitten up bad...my husband flipped the mattress up and there was huge infestation of BED BUGS everyehere.Do not reccomend this gross third world country hotel to anyone!!!

                                    Meredith May, Chronicle Staff Writer

                                    April 9, 2007

Walter has stopped hugging his friends. He is throwing out his clothes
and furniture, and he rarely comes out of his Tenderloin hotel room anymore.

He's not suicidal, but darn near. He has bedbugs.

Nearly eradicated in the United States 50 years ago, resistant strains
of "super" bedbugs are infesting mattresses at an alarming rate. In
what's being touted as the biggest mystery in entomology, all 50 states
are reporting outbreaks of the blood-sucking nocturnal critters.

Pest control companies nationwide reported a 71 percent increase in
bedbug calls between 2000 and 2005. Left alone, a few bedbugs can create
a colony of thousands within weeks.

"We never treated bedbugs until 2002. Now we have a dedicated bedbug
crew working on this every day," said Luis Agurto, president of Pestec
                                    in San Francisco.

Agurto's arsenal includes a vacuum, steam heat to cook the bedbug eggs
and targeted spraying of insecticides. It takes three, eight-hour visits
and about $500 to $750 to exterminate one room. A whole house would cost
                                    closer to $5,000.

The bulk of Agurto's clients live in low-income hotels and shelters in
the Tenderloin, but he's been called to five-star hotels and suburban
                                    homes in Walnut Creek.

Bedbugs have been found in moving vans, public transit seat cushions,
airplanes, college dorms and even a Bay Area meditation retreat. They
spread by hitching a ride on your clothes or in your luggage and
crawling off to infest your home or apartment building.

Nearly 300 bedbug infestations were reported to San Francisco health
officials in 2006, more than double the number in 2004. Most of the
cases involved travelers discovering bedbugs in upscale hotels.

The size and shape of a lentil, bedbugs lay eggs during the day and hide
in your bed, clothing and light sockets. At night, they suck your blood,
leaving itchy bumps on your skin and little bloody excretions on your
sheets. They don't pass diseases, but they are incredibly difficult to
exterminate, even following their blood hosts who move to new apartments
                                    trying to get away.

The bedbug resurgence has sparked Web sites like bedbugger.com, where
people share extermination tips, bite mark photos and counsel each other
through the stigma. There are bedbug symposiums, cover stories in
American Entomologist magazine and dozens of videos depicting
infestations on YouTube. California just issued its first state bedbug
guidelines, and New York lawmakers want to ban the sale of reconditioned
mattresses after 4,600 bedbug cases were reported in 2006.

"The Laundromat near my building is packed, the tenants are in there,
washing everything they own and giving each other knowing glances," said
Walter, who has been battling bedbugs for five weeks and fears he will
be kicked out of his Tenderloin studio and made a pariah if he reveals
                                    himself.

Lady Bug, a beagle professionally trained to sniff out bedbugs, makes
regular rounds with Agurto's Pestec crew in San Francisco. On Friday,
the dog inspected Tina Blade's room at the Empress Hotel in the
Tenderloin, smelling the bed frame, baseboards and carpet.

To Blade's relief, Lady Bug deemed the room all clear. Blade is not
among the dozen people who have had bedbug infestations in the 90-room
Empress, but she has been bitten at other single-room occupancy hotels
                                    in the neighborhood.

"I'd always heard that nursery rhyme, 'Don't let the bedbugs bite,' but
I never knew it was real until I moved to San Francisco," she said.

Empress manager Roberta Goodman is proactive about bedbugs. She conducts
tenant meetings, keeps Pestec on call and has Lady Bug in every month to
make sure the bugs are staying at bay.

"I can keep our community educated, but I can't control the guests who
are coming in and out; that's why we do monthly checks," she said.

Bedbugs were nearly eradicated after World War II, when exterminators
and homeowners used DDT to get rid of the pests.

Experts say bedbugs are making a comeback because of increased global
travel and a shift toward less-toxic pest control. As people are backing
away from harsh chemicals and indoor spraying, the bugs are becoming
                                    increasingly resistant to the pesticides.

"We don't use as harsh chemicals as we used to, we don't spray
mattresses with insecticide before selling them anymore, and the bugs
are getting increasingly resistant to the few chemicals we have left,"
said public health biologist Laura Krueger, who wrote the new bedbug
guidelines for the California Department of Health Services.

Nearly all exterminators use pyrethroids, which are a synthetic version
of pyrethrum, the substance found in chrysanthemum flowers. But last
fall, at the University of Kentucky, some of the nation's best bedbug
researchers delivered some sobering news -- while they could kill
bedbugs born in the lab with pyrethroids, four groups of adult bedbugs
brought in from the outside were unaffected.

Because bedbugs are such a new phenomenon, people don't know what to do
about them and are often unwittingly making their problem worse, said
Nobugsonme, a New York woman who runs the bedbugger.com Web site to help
                                    sufferers cope.

A victim herself who wanted to remain anonymous, Nobugsonme said in a
phone interview with The Chronicle that a series of pest control visits
is the only way to get rid of the bugs. Moving the mattress, sleeping in
the living room, using a bug fogger or moving in with a friend will only
                                    relocate the bugs, she said.

"People who throw away all their possessions and battle this for months
and spend thousands on pest control only to relocate and have the bugs
reappear are really traumatized," she said. "They are getting only a few
hours of sleep at night, they feel itchy all the time, some go to
                                    therapy over it."

Thirty percent of people don't have skin reactions to bedbug bites, and
may not notice an infestation until it has gotten out of control.

Pest control researchers are experimenting with alternatives such as
steaming or freezing the bugs to death, and some New Jersey
exterminators are gassing them with the termite killer Vikane.

UC Berkeley urban entomologist Vernard Lewis is trying to get grant
money to build a baited bedbug trap.

Bedbugs give off a distinctive odor, described as rotting coconuts, and
that's probably how the males and females find each other, he said.

"If we can mimic that funk, that stink, I think we could make baits and
                                    monitor them," Lewis said.

Until the experts figure it out, bedbug sufferers will have to help each
other fight back and raise awareness.

When Atlanta filmmaker Kyle Tekiela made a short bedbug film noir and
put it on YouTube, he was shocked by how many people contacted him
begging for help with bedbug problems.

"Students from all over the country sent me videos of their dorm rooms,"
Tekiela said. "This one guy did a 360 where the ceiling meets the walls
and there was a three-inch band of bedbugs all the way around."

When I was a child, my father told me many things. I learned so much about my family's history and music through my father's teachings. Every now and then famous entertainers would stop by to see my father. Unfortunately he was dead by that time. I never understood the Bed Bug situation. I am a logical thinker. How could so many insects infest a bed or other area and not be seen? How were these Bed Bugs able to enter a home. Why didn't pesticides or "hotels" kill these Bed Bugs like Raid did? Well I didn't care about the answers. I never saw a Bed Bug.

In recent months Bed Bugs have been "ruling" the news. I also noticed that the local foodstore began selling "Bed Bug" spray. That's when I knew that "we" (that's right you and I) had problems. The leaders often "prepare" us with "hints". They don't always tell us how serious the matter is.

In my opinion the two "most determined to invade and infest" your home are the Roaches and the Bed Bugs. I will now tell you the major difference between the Bed Bug and the other insects.

The Bed Bug is determined to enter your home and infest it. Other insects will make an attempt. Yet if these bugs "see" a struggle (such as forcing one's way into very tight holes) they will retreat. It's not worth risking loss of legs, tentacles, or wings. A bug is also aware that he or she might be killed after "squeezing" through such a small space. Most bugs are looking for food, or a place to increase their tribe (infest). The Bed Bug, on the other hand KNOWS he/she is coming in your home. And if he/she doesn't, then another member or members of their "kind" is. THEY CAN AND WILL INVADE YOUR HOME AND THEY DON'T CARE HOW MANY OF THEM YOU KILL! Where as roaches will "hit the road with speed (as in those RAID commercials)" BED BUGS ARE AN INVADING ARMY. They will continue to send more and more Bed Bugs until your house is invaded. Then the infesting starts. And then you and I have BIG BUG PROBLEMS.

Oh, did I mention that Bed Bugs take over your sleeping areas and BITE YOU. YES, THEY BITE YOU.

Africa has these ants that invade the home during dark hours. Gangs of ants working together to invade and bite everyone and everything. IT'S TOTALLY HORRIFYING. BED BUGS HAVE THE SAME TYPE OF GANG MENTALITY. Bed Bugs are very confident and determined. They don't rush the "invasion" as those African ants would.

So please be aware that if you see a BED BUG then it's a good chance that your home and area will be invaded at some point.

Oh one other thing. BUG SPRAYS DON'T KILL BED BUGS. THOSE TYPE OF SPRAYS MIGHT KILL SMALLER BED BUGS BUT NOT ADULTS. BED BUGS MUST BE KILLED WITH BED BUG SPRAY(S).

Call an exterminator if you see any Bed Bug or Bed Bugs. Some exterminators will give you a free estimate. Others offer a one time fee to cover a years worth of spraying. It will take more than one spraying session to "push this invading army back". It's probably wiser to pay the fee which covers you for a year's worth of sprayings.

I hate bugs. I leave them alone until they enter my house. I will often try to catch them and release them outside. Sometimes killing them is necessary. I understand how serious Bed Bugs are. The pesticiding of termites is a process. Termites (like Roaches) know when to "abandon ship". Insects are highly intelligent. They won't waste too much time loosing family and friends to "fight back". BED BUGS WILL KEEP COMING. IF 200 INFEST AFTER LOOSING 5000, IT IS A VERY FOR THEM. INFESTATION IS THEIR PRIMARY DESIGN.

Seriously, Bed Bugs could find a nice "summer place" outside to make babies. BUT THEY WON'T. FOR SOME STRANGE REASON, BED BUGS ARE DETERMINED TO ENTER HOMES, STORES, CONDOS, THEATRES, ECT. They probably would enter vehicles as well. Bed Bugs are Nature's way of stressing and pissing humans off!

So once again, call an exterminator if you see a Bed Bug or Bed Bugs. There will be some men who feel that they can handle it. I hope you can. I'd rather go with the exterminator as he is trained what to look for. He is also trained with spray levels.

The Bed Bugs are here folks. They are not going anywhere. We might remember when God plagued Egypt with infestations. It is certainly a good idea to seal any holes which allow entrance into your home. We might also work at throwing things out and having a clear and clean house. This makes it harder for the Bed Bugs to hide and infest.

It is also wise to check everything you bring into your homes including bags and clohing. You might want to have cans of Bed Bug spray on board.

We don't like mice either. Yet mice can be killed with traps or cats. Raid kills roaches.

Bed Bugs are not that easy to kill. Even when these die, their tribe continues their primary goal of eventual invasion and infestation of your home(s).
